Mu Alpha Theta National Convention 2004 Bowl Writing Guidelines
Mu level is for students who have completed a Calculus course. NO AP-BC Calculus questions. Mu students are responsible for knowing topics from all divisions. Alpha level is for students who have completed math courses above Algebra II but who have not taken Calculus. Alpha students are responsible for any topics from PreCalculus and below. No calculus is to be included at this level. Theta level is for students who have not completed any course above Algebra II. There will be no trigonometry questions other than right triangle trigonometry or law of sine and law of cosines.
The bowl event will consist of 12 (you will be writing 15) open ended/free response bowl rounds which students are permitted to discuss orally with team members while working together to derive a single solution. Please be specific as to the form of the answer. For example, if the questions ask for an exact answer and 2 is the answer, then 1.4 is NOT acceptable. If the question states to round the answer to the nearest tenth, then 1.4 is correct. Rounds should have at least two parts (can have more) and then you may ask the students to do some operation with the answers to the parts. Students will have 4 minutes to solve each round and will receive points depending on the minute which they answered the question correctly. NO calculators may be used.
