Course Objectives: In this course, we will read and discuss selected German-language authors with an emphasis on 20th century German prose. You will learn to appreciate variety and meaning of German literary texts. There will be instruction in the fundamentals of textual analysis and terminology within the historical and cultural contexts. The class will be taught primarily in German.

Expectations and evaluation: It is expected that all students will be in attendance daily. Since the course is intended to be largely participatory, such attendance will be required. Except under unusual circumstances, if a student misses more than 4 class sessions during the semester, the final grade will be lowered one whole grade: A- becomes B-, B becomes C, etc.

It is also expected that all students will complete assigned work (both oral and written) as requested and be prepared for each class session.

The final grade will be based on: Attendance: 82 points (41x2) 5 type-written essays in German, 1.5-2 pages each: 300 (5x60) One oral presentation: 48 Homework assignments: 70 (7x10) Midterm: 100 points Final Test: 150 points 750 points
