8th GRADE RESEARCH PAPER REQUIREMENTS AND GUIDELINES
PURPOSE OF PAPER: To investigate/research a topic relating to the social studies curriculum from 7th or 8th grade. To study this topic in-depth and to draw a conclusion from it. Also, to learn the process and format of writing a research paper in MLA format.
DUE DATES: Topic Approval: April 16 Submit a topic for approval prior to this date. Make sure it is clear and focused. From this point forward, start your research and create index cards for any sources you use. Thesis Statement: April 19 Develop a thesis statement about your topic that explains what you intend to prove. Example: The printing press had a significant impact on the expansion of Christianity during the 15th century. Poor example: The printing press was very important in history. Outline: April 23 Create an effective outline that breaks your paper down into its separate paragraphs. Within each paragraph section, detail the points you are going to make as well as the quotes/examples you will use. First Draft: May 10 This is your first full draft which includes all imbedded citations. Paper must be ready for peer editing. Final Draft: May 17 All corrections and revisions completed. Includes works cited. All notes, outline, and rough drafts are due with final draft. Presentations: May 24-26 You will be presenting your research in a Powerpoint presentation. It must be 2 ½ - 4 minutes long and include citations and a works cited slide.
PAPER FORMAT: Typed – double spaced- 7-10 pages (include page numbers) MLA format, embedded citations. Staple once in top left corner; no folders, covers, etc. Works cited page with 5 – 10 research sources (at least two must be non-web sources) Third person narration (do not use I, we, us, you, yours) Formal language (no contractions, text messaging language, etc.) Title page (name, date, title – illustration optional)
POINTS: Paper: 150 points Works Cited: 50 points Presentation: 50 points
