8.3.1 Criteria

a. Award made for any engineering project that falls into the general category of Civil Engineering.

b. Contributions to well-being of people and community.

c. Resourcefulness in planning and solution of design problems.

d. Pioneering in use of materials and methods.

e. Innovations in construction.

f. Consideration of impact on environment.

8.5 SERVICE TO PEOPLE AWARD

8.5.1 Criteria

a. One recipient may be selected by the Governing Board of Sections and Branches or Student Chapters each year.

b. The recipient may or may not be an ASCE member. Although several awards may be given each year, only one award may be presented to any given person in a year.

c. Awardees are to be selected for their service to the general public. The service for which an awardee is selected should have some connection with the planning, design, or construction of the people-serving works of the civil engineering profession.

e. “Awarded in recognition of service to people” (Name of person selected). “Presented in acknowledgment and appreciation of your outstanding service to advance the welfare of the people in our community. Awarded by the American Society of Civil Engineers.” (Date)

f. To be signed by the National President, ASCE, and the President of the ASCE unit. The name of the recipient will be suitably inscribed on the certificate.

g. The inscribed certificate will be supplied by National ASCE Headquarters at no cost to the Section, Branch, or Student Chapter.

h. The name of the selected recipient must be sent to National Headquarters accompanied by information indicating why that particular person was selected for the award. Additionally, a plan and date for a presentation, including attendant plans for publicity, must be included in the request for the inscribed and signed certificate.

8.8.2 Criteria

a. Distinguished Civil Engineer Award - Given in cases of unusual and outstanding accomplishments, either for years of continued service and/or leadership of major public projects, engineering education, research, etc.

1. Must be ASCE member, Pittsburgh Section. 2. Given to members who may have previously received Section Awards, but are worthy of special recognition.

b. Zone I Government Engineer of the Year - Winners are chosen for their excellent contributions in civil engineering in the public sector. Two awards, Government Civil Engineer of the Year and Young Government Civil Engineer of the Year, may be designated.

c. Award of Merit - Given to a local project worthy of recognition.

d. Michael A. Gross Meritorious Service to the Pittsburgh Section – Given to a member who has rendered conspicuous and meritorious service over several years to the Pittsburgh Section. This award is named in honor of Michael A. Gross who provided almost 70 years of continuous service to the Pittsburgh Section. There is no limit to the number of awardees in a given year.
