Shared Learning Objectives - Format Sheet - Option 3 Project Format for the 2007-2008 School Year

This course is designed to expose students to a large majority of the skills needed for getting started in web design. Students will begin by learning basic HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) and creating 10 page websites on a topic(s) of their choice. Once students are comfortable with HTML the class will move to FrontPage or DreamWeaver and work with manipulating their site in this environment. Students will also gain a basic understanding of Flash MX and design their own Flash movies. They will also look at more complex Flash work posted online for public consumption and tinker with these files to modify their original design. When possible students will also receive exposure to the PHP language via the bulletin/messaging system PHPBB and the database system MySQL that interfaces with PHPBB. Finally, students will learn to publish work online to a live web hosting location.

Course Outline:

1. HTML- This component includes: an understanding of the basic components of an HTML page (paragraphs, text formatting, images, links), finding and incorporating new codes and features, and adding DHTML scripts.

A. Total Unit Time: 6 weeks

 Assignments Include: A 10 page website created on a school appropriate topic(s) of the student's choice.

A. Total Unit Time: 1 weeks  Assignments Include: Students will complete 1 writing piece and an exam on this topic

demonstrating their understanding of various file formats.

3. FrontPage / DreamWeaver- Students will explore how to create pages using this software as well as how to modify pages they designed using HTML.

A. Total Unit Time: 2 weeks

 Assignments Include: Setting up a "web", creating a new page using this software,

adding tables to current pages, and creating a "theme".

4. Flash MX- This segment teaches students to make simple Flash movies and provides an understanding of the complexity of the Flash games they like to play. The class will learn basic drawing within the program as well as importing images from other programs, how to animate objects, creating buttons or links within the program, etc. Students will also experiment with complex Flash files to locate and modify individual elements.

A. Total Unit Time: 3 weeks

 Assignments Include: Simple movies depicting scenes like-animated balls bouncing, a man drowning, a bird flying, etc.

Editing a complex Flash file from Flashkit.com to change the images used in the file or the actions that occur.

5. PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor)- PHP is an HTML embedded scripting languages. Learning PHP is similar to learning HTML in that they share some of the same formatting and labels.

A. Total Unit Time: 1 weeks

 Assignments Include: Reviewing a PHP file to determine what is designed for and locate specified areas.

6. Website Management- Students will either post and manage their own website live via their home ISP or become involved in the class website project for a local business or organization. Student roles may include: communications, graphics, theme and color style, PHPBB setup and management, file conversion, content manager, audio and video content, etc.

A. Total Unit Time: 5 weeks

 Assignments Include: Each student will have a specific role to play in this portion of the class and will be graded for their performance and effort by themselves, their peers, and the instructor.

7. Final Project- Students will design and create a final project using any or all of the programs, languages, or skills they have gained throughout the course.

A. Total Unit Time: 2 weeks

Evaluation: Methods of evaluation may include:

Current Event Essays- Approximately 5 current event essays will be assigned each quarter with a length of 200 words each.

Participation and Behavior- This portion of a student’s grade is a reflection of their behavior, attendance, input, and observance of classroom rules.

Class Projects- In class work counts as a significant portion of the student’s grade, rubrics are provided for each assignment.

Online Quizzes- Require students to show knowledge of programs used in class and information provided from readings and class discussions.

Software Used: Microsoft Notepad, Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint, FrontPage / Internet Explorer 7.0 / Adobe: Photoshop, ImageReady / Macromedia (now owned by Adobe) DreamWeaver, Flash MX / Web Hosting Interfaces / MySQL and PHPBB when appropriate / Others as needed

Prior knowledge: Students should have at least a general comprehension of the basic operations of a computer. Additionally, students will benefit from having completed the ELCS Courses titled “Computer I” and “Graphics” and they are strongly advised to take these prior to Web Design.

Subsequent knowledge: 1 Students will become familiar with common terminology used in web design work. 2 Students will be able to discuss the techniques used to achieve a variety of results. 3 Students will utilize critical thinking. 4 Students will be aware of the complexity and breadth of content involved in web design and will demonstrate aptitude in several areas within this content. 5 Students will be knowledgeable about the file formats that pertain to the web design field.

Procedure: This online course is designed to be completed in approximately 20 weeks. 1. Login using a student account at http://blackboard.neric.org provided by your teacher. 2. Go to “Course Assignments” and select a component area to begin working in. 3. Begin completing the stated tasks for the component area you have chosen. 4. As you complete all the assignments in a given area, move on to another. Take the assessment for each area as you complete it. 5. Finally, complete the final exam. *More specific instructions for individual tasks are provided with each assignment.

Instructional Modifications: The design of this course allows students to work at their own pace on materials that are relevant to them. Modifications can be made as needed and may include: printing exams to be completed on paper, using a scribe or reader, etc.

Students will: apply technological knowledge and skills to design, construct, use, and evaluate products and systems to satisfy human and environmental needs.

This is evident when students: identify, locate, and use a wide range of information resources including subject experts, library references, magazines, videotapes, films, electronic data bases and online services, and discuss and document through notes and sketches how findings relate to the problem. Arts 1- Students will: actively engage in the processes that constitute creation and performance in the arts (dance, music, theatre, and visual arts) and participate in various roles in the arts. This is evident when students: create art works in which they use and evaluate different kinds of mediums, subjects, themes, symbols, metaphors, and images. Arts 2- Students will: be knowledgeable about and make use of the materials and resources available for participation in arts in various roles. This is evident when students: use the computer and electronic media to express their visual ideas and demonstrate a variety of approaches to artistic creation.

Assessments: Assessments are given for: Assignment- in class work counts as a significant portion of the student’s grade, rubrics are provided for each assignment and the value of the assignment in listed in the description Participation and Behavior- this portion of a student’s grade is a reflection of their behavior, attendance, input, and observance of classroom rules. Student can successfully demonstrate any of the skills learned during the term on a sample web. 2. Pupil can define terms encountered during this course. 3. Student can describe the techniques used to achieve a particular result for a specified task. Reflections: This course provides a detailed in depth exploration of web design appropriate for high school students across NYS who are interested in computer technology and/or art.
