Science 8 Tides Web Quest Name:______

Learning objective: 311-10 Students will explain how waves and tides are generated and how they interact with shorelines

Introduction: Have you ever visited the ocean? Have you ever built a sand castle and then watched the waves get closer and closer until they start washing away the outer wall of your sand castle. Bit by bit your castle starts to crumble into the sea. Slowly the waves come higher and higher up the beach until your entire sand castle is washed away. The tide has come in. But why does that happen? What is the tide?

Instructions: Follow the Internet link and read or watch carefully before answering each question. Answer each question in a complete sentence on the answer sheet. http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/weather-and-climate/tides.htm

1. What are the tides?

2. How many high tides normally occur each day? How many low tides normally occur each day?

3. What two objects in our solar system cause ocean tides? Which has the greater effect? Why?

4. Why are there high tides on opposite sides of the earth?

6. What is a spring tide? Explain what causes a spring tide? (Draw a picture.)

7. How often do spring and neap tides occur?

Record your answers below. What is a tide?  An extreme pull from the gravity of the sun  Something that happens to the ocean every two days  A cyclical pattern of temperatures in seas and oceans  A continual rise and fall of water in seas and oceans

What is the moons role in causing tides?  Its phases make the tides rise and fall  Its gravity causes the water level on earth to change  Its inertia works with its craters to make tides  It has no effect at all on earth’s tides

On which sides of earth do high tides occur?  The sides closest to and farthest away from the moon  At the equator and poles  Only the sides that are closest to the moon  Only the sides that are farthest from the moon

What causes high tide on the side of Earth opposite the moon?  The pull of the sun on the side of earth opposite the moon causes a high tide  The tilt of the earth on its axis causes different seasons, such as spring, which create tides  The moon pulls the solid earth toward itself, which makes the water bulge on the opposite side  The oppositional gravitational force of the moon pulls the water on the side farthest from itself

When the moon and the sun are on opposite sides of the earth they form an extremely high tide. What is this tide called?  Neap tide  Sweep tide  Spring tide  Neat tide

How do the sun and moon work together to create a neap tide?  By forming a right angle with the earth and creating an extreme gravitational pull  By forming a right angle with earth and canceling out each other’s gravitational pull  By aligning on opposite sides of the earth and creating an extreme gravitational pull  By aligning on opposite sides of the earth and canceling out each other’s gravitational

Which of these is true about how often tides occur?  All tides occur once a week  Tides have no pattern  High tides and low tides occur twice a month and spring tides and neap tides occur twice a day  High tides and low tides occur twice a day and spring tides and neap tides occur twice a month

9. Why DON’T the normal number of high and low tides happen in some places? Name one place where this is true, and tell how many high or low tides happen there.

10. What is the most interesting thing you learned today about tides?

Bonus: Hurricane Sandy (2012) was affected by the moon phase and the tide at the time of the storm. Explain and give the URL where you found your answer.
