Tacp Endorsed Foundation Course in Aquatic Therapy

Mike Maynard MCSP HT ATACP Accredited Tutor in Aquatic Physiotherapy

TACP ENDORSED FOUNDATION COURSE IN AQUATIC ATHERAPY

Tutor: Mike Maynard Grad Dip Phys MCSP MSOM HT ATACP Accredited Tutor in Aquatic Physiotherapy

Mike Maynard trained at Bath School of Physiotherapy 1977 to 1980, and this training kindled his interest in Aquatic Physiotherapy. He joined the Royal Air Force on qualifying, and over 20 years served at various military hospitals both home and abroad. He is now Site Lead Physiotherapist at Pilgrim Hospital, in Boston Lincs and is Clinical Lead for Aquatic Physiotherapy for United Lincolnshire Hospitals.

He has carried out Aquatic Physiotherapy treatments in situations as diverse as a 6-foot square pool in Germany, to a full size outdoor swimming pool in Cyprus and served 2 periods at the Medical Rehabilitation Unit Headley Court in Surrey. During the first period he was responsible for all the individual (rather than class based) patients, and the second period involved responsibility for a complete pool rebuild plus setting policy for the running and use of the Aquatic Physiotherapy facility.

He successfully passed the Bath Hydrotherapy Course in 1996, and commenced national teaching on a variety of courses in 1998. He is on the committee of the Aquatic Therapy Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (ATACP)

He has presented at many Aquatic Physiotherapy study days and at the PCT conference at the NEC Birmingham in 2008. He also leads the Education subgroup of the ATACP. He was awarded a Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Distinguished Service Award for his services in Aquatic Physiotherapy in 2009.

Dear Course Member

CSP/ATACP ENDORSED FOUNDATION COURSE IN AQUATIC PHYSIOTHERAPY

Welcome to this aquatic physiotherapy course, which I hope that you find both useful and interesting. As you will see from the aims and timetable, it is based around the CSP paper ‘Guidance on Good Practice in Hydrotherapy’, (Availible from the CSP Enquiries Handling Unit – cost £5.00 + p & p) and forms the taught element of the Foundation Programme in Aquatic Therapy.

The enclosed Workbook should be gone through prior to course attendance, as it will help with the basic understanding, particularly on the first morning.

Attendance certificates for your CPD folders and a comprehensive handout are provided. As you will deduce from the timetable, the course is split into classroom and practical pool sessions so don’t forget your swimwear! A consent form is included which should be signed and brought to the first morning of the course.

I look forward to seeing you ‘in the water’. Details are included at the end of this document of the assessment process that can be undertaken to obtain a CSP/ATACP endorsed certificate in Aquatic Therapy.

Yours sincerely Mike

AIM

“To equip a physiotherapist with the knowledge and clinical reasoning skills necessary to work safely and unsupervised in a pool”.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of the course the participant should be able to:

Session 1

 Discuss the relevant physical properties of water  Relate these properties to therapeutic techniques in the water  Relate 1 and 2 both to the treatment of patients, and to the changes that specific conditions may cause to a persons “Physical Properties”  Demonstrate an understanding of the physical properties of water to strengthening techniques in the pool  Appreciate and experience the effects of buoyancy, turbulence and the metacentre on a body in water. Session 2

 Demonstrate an understanding of the effects of immersion on the physiology of the human body.  Relate these changes to the safe screening of patients prior to Aquatic therapy  Evaluate the effectiveness of aquatic therapy in a variety of clinical settings.  Demonstrate the ability to confidently use various flotation devices in regard to patient handling  Demonstrate the ability to utilise the physical properties of water to improve range of movement for patients with stiff joints or tight soft tissues  Demonstrate safe therapeutic handing of a patent in water ← Session 3

 Demonstrate an understanding of the main Health and Safety legislation, and its implications on running an aquatic therapy service  Demonstrate an understanding of water disinfection related to the pool environment  Relate the above to maintaining a safe environment for staff and users including the ability to risk assess.  Demonstrate treatment skills including Relaxation, Stabilisation, and Balance work.  Relate these skills to the management of a variety of patient problems ← Session 4

CONSENT AND SAFETY FOR PARTICIPANTS OF A FOUNDATION PROGRAMME IN AQUATIC PHYSIOTHERAPY PLEASE READ THIS STATEMENT CAREFULLY. IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN TO ENSURE THAT:

1. All course participants are aware of the risk of injury at the pool

2. Precautions are taken to avoid accidents or injury during the course

Physical activity during the course

Aquatic physiotherapy training courses have a large practical element to them. All participants will be involved with physical activities in the swimming pool. You will normally be asked to join in two pool sessions not exceeding 3 hours in total each day,. You may find the practical work physically tiring but our intention is for it to be enjoyable and not pressurised.

By enrolling on the course we assume you are physically fit enough to join in all the activities safely. Please complete the form below, and bring it with you – the tutor will require these at the beginning of the course.

Manual handling risks

Course participants will be extensively involved in practising supporting techniques on each other for activities in the water as well as for commonly used therapeutic techniques. Everyone should be made aware that manual handling is one of the most common causes of strain and back pain but with effective training and safety awareness the risks involved can be eliminated or reduced. Course participants should minimise the risk of injury during manual handling activities by observing the following precautions.

 Using only correct supporting techniques as demonstrated by the course lecturer. Always maintain good posture.  Do not continue to support if it becomes a strain.  If unsure at any time always ask the lecturer for help.

Other potential hazards and risk factors

 All wet floor surfaces near the pool are usually very slippery. This includes showers, changing rooms and toilets. Walk carefully and also take care not to slip whilst entering and exiting the pool.

 All jewellery, necklaces, watches, earrings etc. should be removed before enter the water in case these are the cause of abrasions.

 As in all cases, health and safety is a shared responsibility between the tutor and course participants. Mike Maynard MCSP HT ATACP Accredited Tutor in Aquatic Physiotherapy
