Dear Middle School/Junior High School Speech & Debate Coaches:

The Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas Speech and Debate Program and administration are excited to host a middle school/junior high Speech and Debate Tournament to be held Saturday, April 25th, 2015 at Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas Sandy Ridge Campus- 1051 Sandy Ridge Avenue Henderson, NV 89052. Students in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grades are invited. We will be offering the following speech events: Original Oratory, Expos, HI, DI, DUO, Prose and Poetry, or Impromptu. For debate students have the option of entering Student Congress or Public forum.

Each student may enter one speech event and one debate event. Students are encouraged to enter in a speech event and a debate event.

For this tournament I will be using Tabroom.com for Tournament Registration. It is a completely free service. Below is the link. You will need to create an account and input your team again. I will email the specific link for my tournament once it is finished being set up which will be no later than February 1st. www.tabroom.com. Students should be dressed in business casual or business dress. Boys should wear slacks and not jeans, a polo or button down shirt, and a tie is optional. Girls should wear a skirt and blouse, or a dress, or dress slacks with a dress shirt.

There will be an awards presentation at the close of the tournament.

1 Middle School/Junior High Speech & Debate Tournament: General Information

1. Cost: $8 per student + $10 Team fee. Please make checks payable to Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas you can bring them the day of the tournament or mail them to Coral Academy of Science Attn: Amanda Sloan 1051 Sandy Ridge Avenue Henderson, NV 89052. Tabroom creates an invoice for you however I am still working out the meal option. Attached is a fee calculation sheet. 2. A pre-paid lunch option is available for purchase to students and chaperones. The price of the lunch will be $6.00 and include pizza, drink and a dessert. Please email me the number of meals you are ordering no later than April 17th. There will be a snack bar. 3. Deadline to enter students: Friday, April 24, 2015

6. Public Forum Topic – Resolved: On balance, the benefits of genetically modified foods outweigh the harms.

7. Each session of Congress will last for 45 minutes. All speeches will be no more than 90 seconds. Two cross-examination questions may be asked after each speech.

8. There is no minimum time for speech events, maximum time is 10 minutes. 7 minutes for PPI.

9. If a student is registered for Public Forum debate and their partner does not show up they may switch to Student Congress on the day of the event.

2 10. A teacher or administrator from your school must accompany the students for the entire day.

WHEREAS, The United States has signed, but not yet ratified, the Kyoto Protocol; and WHEREAS, 192 countries have ratified the protocol and follow its guidelines for pollution control; and WHEREAS, The United States must lower pollution and greenhouse gas emission levels for the benefit of it’s citizens, environment, and natural resources; and WHEREAS, These goals may be accomplished through ratification of the Kyoto Protocol; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Congress here assembled make the following recommendation to ratify the Kyoto Protocol by 2016.

2. A resolution to require high school students to participate in a extracurricular activity in order to graduate.

1 Whereas, students are more likely to stay in school when participating in extracurricular

2 activities; and

3 Whereas, the graduation rates in the United States need to rise,

4 Whereas, extracurricular activity is described as an activity done outside of school; and

5 Whereas, students would be more involved in school and therefore be it,

6 Resolved, that this Congress require high school students to participate in extracurricular

7 activities in order to graduate.

3. A Bill to Ban Private Prisons

Be it enacted by the Congress here assembled that: SECTION 1. The formation of private prisons shall be banned, and all existing private prisons shall be shut down. SECTION 2. A. Private prisons are prisons that gain profit and are controlled by individuals or corporations, rather than the government. All current private prisons shall be reformed to be government owned. Owners of private prison facilities will be reasonably compensated for properties converted forfederal use.

5 SECTION 3. The Federal Bureau of Prisons shall oversee the implementation of this bill. Funding necessary for this legislation shall be allocated to the BOP as Congress sees fit. SECTION 4. Implementation of this law will begin in January 2015, with full implementation by 2025. SECTION 5. All laws in conflict with this legislation are hereby declared null and void.

4. A Resolution to Abolish the Death Penalty to Eliminate Cruel and Unusual Punishment

1 WHEREAS, executing inmates is to excessive of a punishment; and

2 WHEREAS, inmates are unnecessarily being executed to enforce

3 Laws; and

4 WHEREAS, it is cheaper to imprison inmates lifetime opposed to

5 Executing them due to legal fees ; and therefore it be

6 RESOLVED, that the death penalty should be abolished.
