GUIDE SHEET: TOY

SCHOOL BUS

Program Year: 1

Supporting Your Child’s Development: Playing with the toy school bus will spark your child’s imagination, as she/he imagines short stories or scenarios as she/he plays. This type of story creation is a basic component of early literacy and school readiness. In addition, manipulating the figures in and out of the bus will help develop your child’s fine motor skills, a precursor to writing and keyboarding ability.

NAME AND ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO NAME:

Labels: School bus, vehicle, students, wheelchair, bus driver

Colors: Yellow school bus, Blue and Black wheels, Red stop sign, Green wheelchair

Numbers: One driver, Two headlights, Four wheels

Shapes and Sizes: Round wheels, Octagonal stop sign

Textures: Smooth bus

Relationships: The children are sitting behind each other. The children are climbing inside the school bus.

Categories: Children, vehicles, students

Causing Things to Happen: If you open the school bus door, the stop sign will swing out. If the bus goes too fast, the children might fall out of their seats.

DESCRIBE YOUR ACTIONS. ENCOURAGE CHILD TO DESCRIBE OWN ACTIONS:

General: Let’s take all the pieces out of the box and see what we have.

www.parent-child.org ©The Parent-Child Home Program, Inc. 2013 Matching: Put all the children together in one place, and put the driver in another place.

Sounds: Make the sound of the bus engine as it drives.

Fitting: Fit each child into his or her seat.

REMIND THE CHILD TO THINK ABOUT WHAT S/HE IS DOING:

To Get Child's Attention: Can you push the bus to Mommy?

To Make a Choice: Which child do you want to put in the bus first?

To Encourage Self-control: See if you can line up all the children at the bus stop.

To Remember Other Experiences: Have you ever seen a real school bus?

To Do Things in the Right Order: First put each child at her/her bus stop, then have the driver pick up the child at each one.

FUN IDEAS TO USE WITH YOUR CHILD:  Have your child pretend to be a school bus driver, and see if he/she can follow directions, such as drive fast, drive slow, stop, and make a turn.  Together with your child, draw a bus, color and decorate, then cut out flaps in the windows. Tape or glue photos of your child and other family members to appear in the windows when the flaps are opened.
