Main Job Purpose

To provide technical and scientific support for approved projects in the R&D department. Specifically those in Biosafety associated with product assay and product biosafety.

1. Key Duties 1.1 To perform experimental work that advances the agreed project(s) within R&D: 1.1.1 maintain a high standard of work, in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good laboratory Practice (GLP) or BPL Standard Laboratory Practice (SLP). 1.1.2 contribute to the design of experiments by planning, writing and reviewing SOPs and/or study plans. 1.1.3 be trained and competent in the use of a range of specialized laboratory equipment. 1.1.4 develop and validate purification and analytical methods. 1.1.5 follow written procedures such as standard operating procedures (SOPs) and study plans. 1.1.6 maintain accurate and up to date records of all experimental work. 1.1.7 record and investigate any deviations from expected results or documented procedures.

1.2 To review and analyse experimental results: 1.2.1 utilise the appropriate computer software packages to allow detailed analyses of results 1.2.2 identify any variations and trends. 1.2.3 make recommendations on future project strategies based on analyses. 1.2.4 survey literature and evaluate data from other organizations.

1.3 To communicate information clearly and logically: 1.3.1 assist in the preparation of progress, interim and final reports. 1.3.2 provide updates on project progress to intra and inter-departmental colleagues. 1.3.3 use presentation skills appropriate to the target audience. 1.3.4 train and assess other staff.

1.4 To assist in the maintenance of laboratory resources: 1.4.1 clean, calibrate and maintain equipment. 1.4.2 prepare and maintain reagents. 1.4.3 maintain contact with external suppliers and technical specialists.

1.5 To maintain compliance: 1.5.1 be conversant with, and apply, internal and national policies. 1.5.2 observe laboratory health and safety instructions regarding the use of personal protective clothing and equipment. 1.5.3 perform and review general risk assessments and observe COSHH regulations. 1.5.4 observe all GMP, SLP/GLP requirements and contribute to audits. 1.5.5 secure the confidentiality of BPL information.

2 Principal Resources Controlled: 2.1 Responsible for the use of consumables and reagents within the laboratory, and to report any difficulties to the line manager. 2.2 Responsible for stock control in area of responsibility and the ordering of laboratory supplies and consumables. 2.3 Responsible for ensuring that allocated equipment/instrumentation is maintained, serviced and calibrated and that associated records are in compliance at all times.

3. Planning and Organisation: 3.1 Plan own working day to ensure completion of project within agreed deadlines. 3.2 Maintain a personal training and development folder and ensure that training to others is appropriately documented. 3.3 Maintain a record of time spent on specific activities.

Contact with Others: 4.1 Other members of the department during execution of their duties, and may be asked to participate in team activities that extend beyond the line management structure. 4.2 Suppliers of consumables and instrument service contractors as required. 4.3 Staff across site as more complex tasks are undertaken.

5. Major Challenge of the Job: 5.1 Performing competently a variety of biochemical and biological techniques. Working with a high degree of accuracy. 5.2 Maintaining a high standard of work, in accordance with GMP, GLP or SLP. 5.3 Remaining up to date with specialist knowledge and skills. 5.4 Maintaining awareness of current legislation and regulations. 5.5 Concentrating on complex data for prolonged periods of time. 5.6 Handling potentially infectious biological material in accordance with local safety procedures.

6. Knowledge, Skill and Experience Required: 6.1 A BSc degree, preferably in a biology- or biochemistry- based subject, or relevant experience. 6.2 Completion of R&D induction training. 6.3 On-going training on a variety of equipment and techniques and a variety of short courses as necessary. 6.4 Knowledge of scientific investigation and reporting.

7. Decision Making Authority: 7.1 Planning own work on a day-to-day basis in line with project demands. 7.2 Determining the validity of experimental results and decide if further investigation or managerial advice is needed before starting the next stage of the work programme. 7.3 Solving minor technical problems. 7.4 Assessing the competency of individuals that they have trained.

8. Other Information:

8.1 Scientists will receive appropriate training in all aspects of their work. Scientists are not expected or permitted to work without prior agreement that adequate training has been provided. 8.2 Within their capabilities and potential, Scientists may be required to work on different projects, which may not be led by their own line-manager.
