Scottish Dental Postgraduate Fellowship – Quality Improvement

NHS Education for Scotland’s (NES’s) Scottish Dental Postgraduate Fellowship (SDPF) scheme supports dentists and DCPs undertake postgraduate study leading to a Masters level qualification at a Scottish University. Entrance to the Fellowship scheme is open to dentists and DCPs who are currently working in the PDS or GDS in Scotland.

The SDPF scheme is currently offering up to four Fellowship places to undertake the MSc. Quality Improvement at the University of Dundee beginning January 2017. This is a distance learning qualification that has been developed in partnership between the University of Dundee and NHS Tayside's Improvement Academy. This course which is suitable for a multi-professional audience is supported by a faculty of academic and experienced improvement and organisational development practitioners from NHS Fife and NHS Tayside. Designed to focus on the delivery of sustainable, measurable improvements in quality, the MSc Quality Improvement will enable participants to develop an understanding of the science and art of improvement and its application in their organisation. More information about the course and its entry requirements is available here.

The Fellowship offers an attractive package of financial support to undertake this qualification.

For dentists and DCPs working in a salaried position in the PDS or GDS the employer pays the Fellow’s salary however, the salary is subsidised by NES to the extent of 25% of gross salary, paid pro-rata and based on the PDS or A4C scale as appropriate, to reimburse the employer for protected learning time. Salary contributions are paid directly to the Fellow’s employer for the duration of the academic year (September to May). For self- employed dentists and DCPs an independent practitioner payment will be made. This payment will be made for the duration of the academic year (September to May). The amount will be based on the Fellow’s professional role and the equivalent PDS or A4C salary scales.

Course fees will be subsidised according to NES’s Funding Provision Scale which is appended to this information sheet. For the current academic year, the course fees payable are £885 per module. Financial support for travel and subsistence associated with the Fellowship is also paid.

All supervision to undertake the MSc. Quality Improvement will be provided by the University of Dundee. However, a learning contract with NES will be agreed and the Clinical Effectiveness workstream of the Dental Directorate will provide mentoring if required. NES also provides annual training and networking days which the Fellow will be encouraged to attend.
