General

1. Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Medical Fellows Program

One year research program with full stipend, health insurance, and research allowance.

2. Doris Duke Medical Fellowships

One year program for international research with full stipend, health insurance, travel to research site as well as conferences. Must apply through one or more of 6 participating institutions (Emory is not one but you can apply through the others).

3. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP)

One year of research at NIH campus in Bethesda, MD with full stipend and benefits.

4. Alpha Omega Alpha Student Research Fellowship

$5000 support for minimum of 8-10 weeks full time research i.e. does not require a year of research, 5 month Discovery would be sufficient. One half paid up front, one half on submission of a final report. Up to $1000 for travel to present at a meeting. Only one nominee per school. Application requires a 4 page research proposal and letter of support from mentor.

This is an odd little scholarship and might be most appropriate for a student near completion of Discovery. They give out two $10,000 awards and four $5,000 awards (paid to the SOM to offset tuition). You need to submit transcript, and description (abstract or poster ) of your research, and answer a question about a protein important to medicine in the next 10 years. They have confirmed that a medical student would be eligible (apply as graduate student).

Cardiology

1. American Heart Association Fellowships

This is an award to Emory to support Discovery students doing projects in Cardiology or Cardiovascular research. There is funding for 3 students per year, each receiving an award of $4,500 ($4000 in stipend, $500 for research/travel expenses). Applications will require MCAT scores, undergraduate and med school grades, research proposal and a written person statement of career goals

Dermatology

1. American Skin Association – Medical Student Grants Targeting Melanoma and Skin Cancer

$7000 research support for a new or ongoing research/clinical investigation project. Application is in the fall for funding to start the following January. Requires a letter from the Chair of Dermatology who may nominate only one candidate per year.

Ethics

1. Fellowship at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE)

Two week paid trip to Germany in late June 2016 for study in ethics and history. This would have to be one piece of a larger Discovery project on medical ethics.

1. American Federation for Aging Research - Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR)

a. Home Institution Track: Three month stipend for research in aging at Emory and poster presentation at American Geriatrics Society annual meeting in DC. b. National Training Center Track: Three month stipend for research at a national training center and poster presentation at American Geriatric Society annual meeting in DC. Training Centers: Harvard, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, UCSD, UNC, University of Texas Health Sciences San Antonio. Travel to a training center not covered.

1. American Society of Hematology (ASH) HONORS Award

$5,000 stipend plus travel to annual ASH meeting for two years.

2. American Society of Hematology (ASH) Physician Scientist – Career Development Award

One year of research stipend (July 1 –June 30) plus health insurance, research, and travel allowances.

3. Conquer Cancer Foundation – Medical Student Rotation for Underrepresented Populations

Funding for 8-10 week clinical oncology research rotation, with $5,000 stipend, $1,500 for travel to annual ASCO meeting and $2,000 for research expenses.

4. Travel Award for Innovative Oncology Research

This award is from an Emory-based fund and will provide travel support for a student with an accepted abstract for presentation at a cancer-relevant meeting. Application deadline is October 20, 2017. Application requires: 1. Accepted abstract from a relevant meeting, 2. Letter of support from mentor, and 3. A statement of the student’s goals for meeting attendance. Award will cover airfare, hotel, meeting registration and 1 year membership in the appropriate society to a maximum of $1500. Meeting must take place before graduation in 2018.

7. Spirit Foundation Medical Student Research Grant

The Spirit Foundation provides one medical student with a $1,000 research grant for the 2016 grant cycle. There is a preference for applications targeted towards cervical cancer. However, other HPV-related diseases and cancers will be considered, for example, anal cancer. Applicants should send a letter of intent with the name and department of mentor, title and very brief description of the project by March 31, 2016. Potential grant applicants will be notified within 30 days of letter submission and invited to submit a full application. Details of the full application will be disclosed for selected finalists. Note – I have inquired but have not yet been able to confirm whether this will be offered again for the 2017 cycle.

$2000 stipend to support research with a mentor who is a member of the IDSA. This can be a domestic or global health project.

1. American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene - Kean Travel Fellowship

2. Emory Global Health Institute Multidisciplinary Team Field Scholars Program

Up to $3,000 per student to support global health research in which the medical student is part of a team including students from 3 different schools at Emory working with an Emory mentor. Can be conducted at a domestic or international site.

3. Global Health Fellowship Program

A one-year clinical research training program for pre- and postdoctoral candidates, sponsored by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) and several collaborating institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is open to post-doctoral fellows (post-PhD or post-MD) and to doctoral fellows (in their PhD or in medical school)

Fellows train in an 11-month intensive, hands-on research program at one of our affiliated international training sites. VECD’s highly experienced global health mentors work together to mentor fellows in numerous US and LMIC partner institutions, selected as diverse, well-funded research sites in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Mentors represent expertise in infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, cancer, nutrition, diabetes/metabolic diseases, cardiology, mental health, women and MCH, pediatrics, substance abuse, ophthalmology, dental/oral health, surgery, trauma, burn, anesthesiology, health systems /implementation science, behavioral/social sciences, nursing, neurology/stroke, lung diseases, & genetics.

The application deadline for 2016-17 fellows (fellowships beginning July 2016) has passed. However, there may still be opportunities for post- and pre-doctoral US citizens to be funded. Please contact Mark Hutcheson ([email protected]) and Olivia Manders ([email protected]) soon, if interested.

Medicine/Diabetes, Digestive, Kidney diseases

1. National institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIH/NIDDK)

For a student interested in a full year of research in one of these areas there is the possibility of a full stipend from NIH as a supplement to an NIDDK T32 training grant. Neurology/Neuro-Oncology

1. American Brain Tumor Association

For a student to work in a neuro-oncology lab in one of a variety of research types relevant to brain tumors. This can be basic, clinical, biomarker development, therapeutic development, etc. Funding up to $3000 for research costs with possibility of an additional $1000 for top ranked student. Obstetrics and Gynecology

1. Marianne Ruby Awards

This opportunity provides two $1,250 awards to support a research project in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The mentor must have a faculty appointment in the Department of Application requires a Research Proposal, Applicant’s CV, Applicant’s letter of intent, and 2 letters of support, one of which must come from the Discovery mentor. Applications are due by April 18, 2016. Funding will be available from May 1, 2016 to April 30, 2017.

Pediatrics

1. American Pediatric Society and Society for Pediatric Research

For research at a non-Emory School of Medicine. Provides stipend for two to three months.

Underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply but this is open to all medical students.

Radiology and Imaging 1. Radiological Society of North America

Provides a stipend for full-time research under the direction of a member of the Radiological Society of America. Fellowship provides $3,000 and mentor’s department must provide matching funds.

Surgery/Global Health

1. Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Associateship

For a student wishing to do a 1 year program. Provides an opportunity to work as part of a team conducting surgery and research at various underserved international sites including Haiti, Rwanda, Uganda and Liberia. NOTE: this program does not provide funding. They will provide information on funding opportunities that can be applied for. Requires prior completion of surgical clerkship.
