Tech-Café Every Friday Night 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm Weekly themes are chosen to spark the imagination of our tweens and teenagers while providing a safe and relaxed social environment. 5th Grade and up welcome! $5 for members, $8 non-members. Refreshments are also available for purchase.

Toddler Tuesday is every Tuesday! Come explore and enjoy hands-on science exhibits from 9:30-11:30 am, $5 for ages 1 and up. $1 for a make and take activity. Infants 1 and under are FREE. Pack a snack and play a while. Punch cards are available for $25 which includes a free visit and all take home activities!

First Friday Kids ART-In

October 7th and November 4th 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm Port Discover offers Kids ART-In during the First Friday Art Walk for members only of Port Discover. Kids will enjoy a science activity, center time and pizza while parents can enjoy an evening of downtown art-walking. Ages 5-12. Registration is required, $10 per child, $5 for additional siblings. Not a member!?! Try it out first, join later if you’d like!

Second Saturday Science Free hands-on science program. Space is limited, so registration is recommended.

Saturday, October 8, 11:00 am Join Port Discover at the Jenkins Science Center Lab 135; ECSU to learn the ins and outs of cloning and to clone your very own Chrysanthemum with Dr. Young! Students will need to be in shoes; no open sandals or flip-flops. Also, please dress wearing clothing to cover most of the skin. Please note: This event will be held at ECSU.

Saturday, November 12, 11:00 am Elizabeth City Fire Station Presents Fire Safety at Port Discover. Learn what you can do to stay safe if there is a fire!

Science with a Story This is a STEM program just for preschoolers, ages 2 – 5. Cost for the program is $5 per child and reservations are recommended. Parent or guardian must accompany child. This program is usually the third Thursday of every month. Pumpkin Science – October 20, 10:00 am - 11:00 am Come dissect, measure, and explore the inside of a pumpkin. We’ll learn some ways seeds are dispersed and then cook them up for a yummy snack.

Trottin’ Turkeys – November 17, 10:00 am - 11:00 am Gobble, Gobble, Gobble… A real turkey is coming to visit! Trot on in to learn about turkeys and make your own turkey to take home.

After School Science Drop in to Port Discover for some after school science! Registration is recommended. Afterschool groups can reserve space by contacting the center.

Thursday, October 27, 4:00 pm Join us, and Nixon Solutions, to dissect and discover the inside of a computer!

Thursday, December 1, 4:00 pm Take a trip through Space with David Brinkmann from the United States Coast Guard!

Port Discover for Grown-Ups Events Science Café: Science Café will be held at Sydney’s Café and Bistro at 507 E Main St. in Downtown Elizabeth City . Informal and interactive science discussions for Grown- Ups. Programs feature local experts on a variety of topics of interest to the curious mind. Come early to order dinner or drinks and bring your questions or ideas!

Thursday, October 13, 7:00 pm “The Science of Sound” is a fun and flashy look at elements in music. But is music a science or an art? (And how loud is “forte”, anyhow?) Loaded with multimedia, the program is presented by Dr. Chris Palestrant, Elizabeth City State University music professor and past winner of the UNC Board of Governors’ “Teacher of the Year.”

Thursday, November 10, 7:00 pm What is Synthetic Biology!?! Join Gary Harmon, a Professor of Natural Sciences, in a discussion about this relatively new branch of science that combines advances in chemistry, biology, computer science, and engineering to enable us to go from an idea to a product more efficiently. It focuses on design and construction to re-engineer cellular systems that will be used to produce drugs that target “superbugs” and cancer. H.A.S.
