Course Description: This course is designed for those students interested in sports medicine, physical therapy or other health related fields. Students will use applications of kinesiology in the recognition, management, reconditioning, and prevention of athletic injuries.

Course Objectives: 1. Understand the field of athletic training, job responsibilities/roles, and employment opportunities. 2. Understand basic principles of injury causation, body response to trauma, types of wounds, and principles of injury management. 3. Understand basic functional anatomy of the extremities relative to common athletic injuries. 4. Understand common athletic injuries, including causes, resultant signs/symptoms, management/therapy techniques specific to the injuries, and basic rehabilitation/reconditioning procedures. 5. Demonstrate competency in protective taping techniques.

Soft tissue injuries A. Open wounds B. Closed Wounds iii. Tissue response to trauma iv. Recognition A. HOPS/SOAP VIII. Skeletal System IX. Muscles and Function X. Hydration and Nutrition XI. Heat Illness XII. Concussion Items may be added or deleted as time permits.

Exams and Quizzes Four examinations and four quizzes will be given during each semester. Each exam will consist of approximately 1-2 from the above outline. Exams will be made up of multiple choice, fill-in and short answer.

Notebook Each student is required to keep a spiral notebook specifically for this class with three sections Class Notes Notes from lectures will be kept in a notebook which will be checked on a regular basis for overall organization and content. Question of the Day Each day of class will begin with a question of the day relating to current information being covered in class. This will be dated and written down in the back of the notebook. These questions will be used as study aids for quizzes and tests. Handouts

Athletic Training Article Review A group of 2-3 students will select a research article to present to the class and submit a review of the article. The review will consist of: 1. Summary of article 2. Analysis of article, what you found interesting, what you learned, your groups opinion. 3. A question for the instructor. 4. A question for the class. Each review that is submitted must be typewritten and the presentation will be approximately 15-20 minutes.

Meeting with the teacher During each semester you must schedule a time to meet with the teacher to go over your grade and performance in the class. This should be used as a learning tool and you will be given advice on how to improve in the course.

Electronic Devices in Class Students may bring their cell phones, tablets, or laptops to class daily. All electronic devices are to remain in backpacks until the use of such devices during class, is specified by the instructor only. Classroom use may involve the download/use of apps as designated by the instructor. No other applications may be in use during class time- texting, surfing the web, or any other non-academic use during class is prohibited and may result in the confiscation of the student’s device. Students are responsible for keeping their device safe and secure.
