Lisa Gugino Cedric LeJeune Principal Carolyn Murphy John Reynolds Assistant Principals Dear Parents of Health Students,

All students enrolled in grades 9-12 in Georgia’s public schools are required to successfully complete one semester of Health. Included in Health Education are topics of study for mental health, growth and development, disease prevention, safety, and family living. These topics of study will involve some classroom instruction in human sexuality and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) prevention.

Georgia’s Quality Basic Education Law, Georgia’s Public School Standards, and the State Board of Education policy require all school systems to offer a course of study in human sexuality and AIDS prevention. The class will utilize the Choosing the Best Journey curriculum. Choosing the Best Journey curriculum focuses explicitly on abstinence when dealing with the issues of premarital sexual decisions. The videos and materials do, however, mention forms of contraception from the perspective that they do not represent safe alternatives to abstinence. The tapes also briefly discuss some of the issues/choices facing young people resulting from unplanned pregnancies. The overriding message throughout the videos and instructional materials focuses purely on abstinence.

You must give your consent in order for your child to participate in these courses of study. Should you choose to exempt your child from studying these issues, he or she will be given an alternative assignment involving other health topics.

You may view all instructional material used in this unit by making an appointment with the instructor.
