Accountable to: Head Teacher and Governors

Purpose Statement

The Deputy Head Teacher will assist the Head Teacher in sharing and communicating the vision and values of the school, to move the school forward and raise standards for all children.

Job Description

The Deputy Head Teacher's roles and responsibilities, will encompass these five key areas of school leadership, under the direction of the Head Teacher:

1. Strategic direction and development of the school. 2. Teaching and Learning. 3. Leading and Managing staff. 4. Efficient and Effective Deployment of Staff and Resources. 5. Accountability.

Strategic Direction and Development of the School

As part of the Leadership Team the Deputy Head Teacher will assist the Head Teacher to:

 Develop a strategic view for school improvement and raise standards in pupil attainment and progress.  Analyse and plan for the school’s future needs and further improvements. Identify and meet priorities and targets within the local and national context, taking into account appropriate data.  Lead by example to inspire and motivate.  Formulate and implement a positive learning ethos, school vision and aims which secure effective teaching and learning.  Ensure that an appropriate curriculum is developed in accordance with the needs and abilities of all pupils taking into account the requirements of the National Curriculum and the Foundation Stage Curriculum.  Monitor, evaluate and review school policies, procedures and practice and take action where necessary.  Manage curriculum development through the school.  Lead on assessment and data analysis to identify where intervention is needed and evaluate achievement of pupils.

 Deputise for the Head Teacher in her absence. Teaching and Learning

As part of the Leadership Team the Deputy Head Teacher will assist the Head Teacher to:

 Secure and sustain effective teaching and learning throughout the school, modelling and leading excellent classroom practice.  Play a leading role in the innovation and implementation of new initiatives, teaching and learning approaches and related pedagogy.  Promote reflective practice in liaison with the staff team.  Take a leading role in the implementation and review of the Positive Behaviour and Anti-bullying Policies throughout the school.  Take a leading role in pastoral care of pupils.  Monitor, evaluate and review the quality of teaching and learning and standards of pupil’s achievements and identify strategies for improvement.  Play a leading role in the development of the planning and assessment procedures throughout the school.  Create and promote positive strategies for equal opportunities throughout the learning community.  Develop an effective partnership with parents and the wider community, supporting and enriching pupil’s learning.

Leading and Managing Staff

As part of the Leadership Team the Deputy Head Teacher will assist the Head Teacher to:

 Motivate, support, challenge and develop staff to ensure school improvement.  Improve the quality of teaching and learning throughout the school.  Work directly with staff in order to raise standards of teaching and learning.  Implement and manage a Performance Management system and process linked to school needs and improvements.  Ensure that all professional development is of a high quality and is clearly relevant to the school’s and individual’s needs and development.  Engage in continued professional development, keeping up to date with current initiatives.  Ensure that professional duties are fulfilled as specified in the Terms and Conditions of Service for Teachers including those for Deputy Head Teacher.

Efficient and Effective Deployment of Staff and Resources

As part of the Leadership Team the Deputy Head Teacher will assist the Head Teacher to:

 Work with senior colleagues to deploy all staff effectively in order to improve teaching and learning.  Maintain and develop recruitment and retention of staff and induction procedures.  Ensure that resources are deployed effectively and efficiently in order to secure value for money and high standards in teaching and learning.  Plan day to day routines, co-ordinating timetables and rotas.

Accountability

The Deputy Head Teacher will account to the Head Teacher and to Governors for the Deputy Head Teacher’s role and responsibilities.

As part of the Leadership Team and Deputy Head Teacher will assist the Head Teacher to:

 Ensure equality of opportunity for all through the school’s policies, procedures and practice.  Ensure that parents and pupils are well informed about the curriculum, attainment and progress and about the contribution that they can make to achieving the school’s targets for improvement.

The above duties are neither exclusive or exhaustive and the post holder may be required by the Head Teacher to carry out other appropriate duties within the grading level of the post and the competence of the postholder.

Person Specification

Deputy Head Teacher

The Deputy Head Teacher works in close partnership with the Head Teacher, as part of the Leadership Team

Experience and Qualifications:

 Experience of contributing towards curriculum co-ordination and policy formulation.  Holds a recognised DfES teaching qualification.  Experience of teaching within the Primary age range.  Evidence of updating professional skills including leadership and management development training.  Experience of leadership and senior management, including evidence of school improvement initiatives, monitoring, evaluation and review and curriculum development.

Professional Knowledge:

 Demonstrates an excellent understanding of the qualities of good teaching and learning, and shows an ability to share them, impacting on others.  Shows an understanding of the overall development needs of Primary children.  Demonstrates the ability to implement effective strategies in sharing/developing good practice throughout the staff team.  Has high expectations of educational achievement and a strong commitment to continued pupil development, leading by example, motivating and inspiring the learning community.  Sets high standards of classroom organisation and stimulating learning environment.  Hold high expectations of self and others.  Has an understanding of school overview and can analyse and plan for whole school needs and improvements.  Demonstrates an understanding and experience of effective planning, implementation and assessment of a broad, challenging and balanced curriculum.  Ensures provision of equality of opportunity for all pupils and staff, promoting positive strategies. Leadership & Management Ability:

 Can demonstrate an ability to be an active member of the Leadership Team, working in partnership with the Head Teacher on school improvement initiatives.  Can demonstrate the ability to play a leading role in implementing a positive reflective learning ethos, the school vision and aims.  Can play an active and leading role in promoting, maintaining and developing a strong team ethos across the whole learning community.  Holds an understanding of strategic planning and can apply a working knowledge of school improvement planning and implementation.  Demonstrates knowledge and experience of leading Monitoring, Evaluation and Review Programmes/Practice linked to school improvement.  Can play a leading role in setting, maintaining and actively promoting high standards of behaviour.  Demonstrates knowledge of best practice in inclusion.  Can play a leading role in the pastoral care of pupils.  Can motivate, challenge, support and develop staff to ensure school improvement.  Can lead in the development of specific management/curriculum responsibility areas.  Can devise and implement effective strategies for involving parents/guardians, Governors and the wider community in the work and expectations of the school.
