H.C.R. No. 131

HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, On February 17, 1995, Dr. Carol Diann Smith Surles was inaugurated as the ninth president of Texas Woman's University, and the experience, integrity, and professionalism she brings to this position will undoubtedly be of great benefit to the students and faculty of that fine institution; and WHEREAS, Highly regarded throughout her field for her academic and administrative credentials, Dr. Surles is well qualified to join the ranks of this school's dedicated and visionary chief executives; a graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, she went on to earn a master's degree in counseling from Chapman College in Orange, California, and a doctorate in education from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; and WHEREAS, A former counselor, social worker, and public television producer, Dr. Surles was successful in a number of professional capacities before embarking on her career in the field of education, which she has served with distinction at such fine institutions as California State University at Hayward, Jackson State University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Central Florida; and WHEREAS, Her work as a professor of management, as an administrator, and as a social scientist has earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues throughout the country, and she has been recognized with such prestigious honors as the Delta Tau Kappa Outstanding Scholar's Award, the United Auto Workers Award for Civil Rights, and the Leadership Orlando Presidential Award, among many others; she also has merited inclusion in such noted publications as Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who Among Black Americans, and Who's Who Among America's Teachers; and WHEREAS, Despite her busy schedule, this esteemed educator has always made time to contribute to many professional and academic organizations, including the American Association of University Professors, the American Association of University Women, the Golden Key Honor Society, and Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society; she has further served her community as a distinguished member of the League of Women Voters, the National Urban League, and other civic leadership groups; and WHEREAS, Throughout her remarkable career, Dr. Surles has enjoyed the love and support of her two children, and the family's devotion to learning has been evident in their accomplishments; her son, Philip, is an industrious student at Strickland Middle School in Denton, while her daughter, Lisa, is pursuing a doctorate at the College of William and Mary; and WHEREAS, Texas Woman's University is the nation's largest university primarily for women, and its reputation for educational excellence and academic leadership will undoubtedly flourish under the guidance of this distinguished educator; as Dr. Surles undertakes the challenge of leading this university into the next century, it is only fitting that the members of the Texas Legislature recognize her for her outstanding achievements at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby congratulate Dr. Carol Diann Smith Surles on her selection as the ninth president of Texas Woman's University and extend to her warmest best wishes for many years of success and happiness in her new post; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Surles as an expression of high regard by the Legislature of the State of Texas.
