Let’s Talk: The Therapeutic Counseling of African American Men and the Struggles/Paradoxes They Face in Relationships with Their Mothers and Intimate Partners

John G. Taylor, MACC, LPC, January 29, 2016, 9:30 – 4 pm, Delta Community Supports, Glenside PA, 5 CEU’s

Workshop Summary: This full day workshop provides attendees with an understanding of the art of counseling African American men. The workshop helps those who work with African American men in therapeutic or counseling relationships to understand the myriad of complex dynamics in the lives of AA men and what brings them into (or turns them away) from therapy. The workshop will focus on the importance of connecting with AA men to better help them talk about and manage issues in their lives, while offering the encouragement needed to live the life they desire.

The workshop will also describe the paradoxes or mixed messages that AA men receive from their single mothers and intimate partners. The tools necessary to prevent frustration, lack of understanding, and the feeling that the AA male client is unreachable or unteachable will be provided. Participants will leave the workshop with clear strategies, knowledge, and power to impact the changes needed in the lives of the AA male clients they serve.
