Course Description: Biology is the study of living things. Biology is a laboratory-based course that allows the learner an opportunity to explore many aspects of life such as: science process skills, laboratory safety, cell structure and processes, homeostasis, biochemistry, photosynthesis and respiration, genetics, evolution, classification, ecology, and diversity of life. Our study of biology will include the study of microscopic individual organisms as well as the study of the global interactions of millions of organisms.

Biology has four units of study: Two first semester: Ecology and Cells, and two second semester: Heredity and Evolution.

Course Standards: Unit Title: Ecology Standards: SB3: Student will derive the relationship between single-celled and multi-celled organisms and the increasing complexity of systems. SB4: Student will assess the dependence of all organisms on one another and the flow of energy and matter within their ecosystems. SB5: Student will evaluate the role of natural selection in the development of the theory of evolution. Unit Title: Cells Standards: SB1: Student will analyze the nature of the relationship between structures and functions in living cells. SB3: Student will derive the relationship between single-celled and multi-celled organisms and the increasing complexity of systems. Unit Title: Evolution Standards: SB2: Student will analyze how biological traits are passed on to successive generations. SB4: Student will assess the dependence of all organisms on one another and the flow of energy and matter within their ecosystems. SB5: Students will evaluate the role of natural selection in the development of the theory of evolution. Unit Title: Heredity Standards: SB1 Student will analyze the nature of the relationship between structures and functions in living cells. SB2: Student will analyze how biological traits are passed on to successive generations. SB3: Student will derive the relationship between single-celled and multi-celled organisms and the increasing complexity of systems. SB5: Student will evaluate the role of natural selection in the development of the theory of evolution.

Grading Policy and Procedures: Biology is a yearlong course. The only time the grade is “final” is at the end of the school year. Grades do not start over second semester. Tests = 40% Class work and Homework = 30% Projects = 10% Final Exam/ End of Course Test Second Semester = 20%

Classroom rules and Expectations: 1. Bring all materials to class each day. 2. Be in your seat and ready to begin work when the tardy bell rings. 3. Listen to and follow all instructions given by the teacher. 4. Respect others right to learn. 5. Be responsible. 6. No gum, eating or drinking in the class/lab room. 7. Remain seated at all times unless directed otherwise by the teacher. 8. Follow all rules as written in the student handbook. . Attendance policy and procedure:

The only tardies that are excused are those outlined in the student handbook under the “Excused Absences” policy. Please note that car trouble and personal reasons are not excused tardies.

Based on Georgia Law (20-2-690) and State Board of Education Rule (JB), any child between the ages of 6 and 16 who during the school calendar year has more than five days of unexcused absences from school will be considered truant. Please refer to the student handbook for more information concerning truancy.

The school year will offer many opportunities for students to learn to grow, both academically and personally. I am glad to have this opportunity to work with you as we strive together to reach the academic goals of your child.

Sincerely,

Robert E. Muzzillo
