Course: IB/AP Statistics Instructor: Carol Baldwin Phone: 812-7814 (after 2:15) E-mail: [email protected] School web page: http://www.cusd80.com/Domain/913

Purpose: The purpose of this class is to help display the relationship between a branch of mathematics and the real world. There is a strong connection between statistics and society. It is hoped that the student will become a more intelligent consumer of numerically based knowledge claims and have some fun doing this.

Course Description and Goal: This IB/AP Statistics class will introduce the student to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students will be exposed to four broad conceptual themes:  Exploring Data:  Interpreting graphical displays of distributions of univariate data  Summarizing distributions of univariate data  Comparing distributions of univariate data  Exploring bivariate data  Exploring categorical data  Anticipating Patterns  Probability as relative frequency  Combining independent random variables  The normal distribution  Simulating sampling distribution  Planning a Study  Methods of data collection  Planning and Conducting surveys  Planning and conducting experiments  Statistical Inference: Confirming models  Confidence Intervals  Tests of Significance  Special case of normally distributed data

College Career Ready (CCR) It is the expectation of anyone taking an AP course that they either take the AP exam, IB Exam, or take dual credit.

College Credit Options: Dual Credit: Chandler High School in conjunction with Chandler Gilbert Community College (CGCC) offers high school students dual credit opportunities. All students must take the Accuplacer test. Students who simultaneously enroll in Statistics at CHS and CGCC take the course at the high school for credit at both institutions. Students must maintain a minimum of a “C” average in the fall semester of this course, take the final exam, and pay tuition fee to CGCC in order to be eligible to enroll in this course for college credit. Three college credit hours are earned upon successful completion of this course. Tuition fees and enrollment information for all courses offering dual credit will be announced at a future date.

AP and IB Credit: In May, students will have the opportunity to take the Advanced Placement Exam in Statistics or an International Baccalaureate Standard Exam.

Perquisite, Calculator, and Textbook: Completion of Year 4 Math, Pre- Calculus, or Calculus is recommended. You need to understand that this is a college-level course and that the standards are high. Be sure that you are ready to work at a high level all year! The textbook that will be used in statistics is Elementary Statistics Second Edition by Larson and Farber. ISBN 0 – 13-065595-3 A graphing calculator is required and mandatory!

Absences and Work: You are expected to make up any work missed because of an absence including any class work. It is your responsibility to find out what work was done while you were absent. If you have an excused absence on a test/quiz day, you will be expected to make it up on the next day!

Test/Quiz Days: All backpacks and purses will be placed at the front of the room during all tests and quizzes.

Tutoring: I will be available on Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 – 3:30.

Grades and Assignments:  Classwork and homework will be collected as assigned.  Warm-ups will be collected bi-weekly.  Tests and most quizzes will be announced and the point totals will vary.  Group and individual projects will be assigned.  Late work will only be accepted if you are absent and turned in within two days of the absence.  Warm-ups cannot be made up .

90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D 59 and below = F

To summarize, points will come from the following sources: Assessments/Projects: 70% Classwork/Homework/Reflections: 30%

Semester Grades will be computed by taking 40% of each quarter and 20% from the Final Exam.

Classroom Expectations:  To attend class regularly  To be on time  To be prepared for class  To remain in your seat until you are dismissed  TO BE RESPECTFUL TO YOURSELF, YOUR PEERS, & YOUR INSTRUCTOR. Tardy Policy: Tardies will be counted and you will be sent to SWEEPS. On Tardy days, you will not be able to get points for your warm-up. Upon your third tardy, your parents will be notified.

Technology: We will be using remind 101, (where I will be able to send you text message reminders or special messages), poll everywhere (where I will ask questions of the class and you will respond by texting back answers, and Nspire navigator (where we will be using Ti-Nspire calculators to interact).
