MENNONITE COLLEGE OF NURSING AT ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY NUR 326 Gerontological Nursing Senior Synthesis Project Spring 2017 The purpose of this project is to: Think critically about concepts previously learned. Apply content learned in previous courses to older adults in a holistic manner. Synthesize previous content together with new perspectives on older adults. Develop a plan of care for an older adult based on previous learnings and new applications. Demonstrate your nursing knowledge, skills, and abilities. This project is worth 20% of your course grade. Expectations for the project include: Application of content on RN Clinical Leadership from the Intraprofessional Teams module, including 3-part nursing diagnoses, measurable goals, specific interventions, and appropriate rationales. Application of learnings from the sample Cognitive Case study. Application of content on the geriatric syndromes. Critical thinking about concepts such as diabetes and hypertension to make application to older adults. Application of NUR 326 course content. Individual work without consultation from peers, nurses, or other individuals. There are two parts to the project that will be graded. 1. Senior Synthesis Exam to be taken on Tuesday, March 21. 2. Reference List to be completed while preparing for the exam and turned in by or before Tuesday, March 21. 3. In addition, to the Exam and the Reference List, you can have a one page “cheat sheet” about any content related to the case study that you think will help you to do well on the exam. Here’s the process. 1. Each student will: a. Receive through ReggieNet Messages a specific case for the project from Dr. Dyck. b. Identify the cognitive problem of the individual in the assigned case study and the appropriate related nursing diagnosis, goal, and at least 5 interventions. NOTE: The cognitive issue, i.e. dementia or delirium is not the nursing diagnosis. c. Identify other priority nursing diagnoses, their related goals, and a minimum of 5 interventions per nursing diagnosis. NOTE: Identify the top 3 diagnoses (i.e. priority diagnoses) for the person in your case study. NOTE: I expect the diagnoses, goals, and interventions to be individualized and specific for your individual. NOTE: I anticipate that you will need to include dependent, interdependent, and independent nursing interventions throughout your plan. d. Identify the priority order of your 3 diagnoses. e. Identify the rationale for your prioritization of these top 3 nursing diagnoses. f. Review quality gerontological nursing references that relate to your case study. g. Develop a reference list of the references that you used to develop your case study. The reference list needs to be in APA format as one would develop such a list for a formal paper. See attached grading rubric. The reference list will be submitted on ReggieNet before the exam.
1 h. Prepare notes on your case study. You may take one side of one page of notes to the exam. This will be collected with your exam. Here’s the Grading. 1. You will take a multiple choice exam on your case study on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. 2. You may bring one side of one page of notes on your case study to the exam. This page will be turned in with your exam. 3. Back packs, books, phones, and purses will need to be at the front/side of the room. 4. A copy of the case study will be provided with the exam. You do not need to include a copy of the case study on your page of notes. 5. The reference list will be graded and returned to you on ReggieNet Assignments together with your final score for the Senior Synthesis Project.
