Priester. He went on to serve the Greater 30 Beard Chapel AME Church for over forty years; and 31 32 Whereas, known as the “James Cleveland of the South” and later 33 as the “Maestro”, he served in numerous musical roles such as 34 director for the local Miss Black Teen America Pageants, guest 35 organist at many local churches’ annual revivals, accompanist for 36 several debutante balls and regional and national conferences of 37 the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, was the founder of the “Just 38 Music” combo band providing entertainment for weddings, 39 receptions, and other special occasions, and was the Director of 40 Music for the Edisto District of the AME Church for many years; 41 and 42

1 [897] 1 1 Whereas, he dedicated his life to helping people and throughout 2 his lifetime served as Executive Director of the Charleston County 3 Economic Opportunity Commission, as a counselor and supervisor 4 at youth homes in both New York and North Carolina, program 5 director for Charleston County Community Action Agency Head 6 Start Program, and as supervisor of the Charleston County Census 7 Project; and 8 9 Whereas, he also supported his local community through his 10 membership in the Masons, George Washington Carver 11 Consistory, Mu Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and 12 the NAACP; and 13 14 Whereas, Mr. Middleton was not just an active member of his 15 church and community but was also a devoted family man. He 16 was the beloved husband of the former Vertelle Deloris, his high 17 school sweetheart, and together they raised three children: Jamela 18 M. Wintons, Dr. Kylon Jerome Middleton, and Dr. Gloria K. 19 Holmes; and 20 21 Whereas, he was also proud to boast seven grandchildren: Jasmine 22 K. Wintons, Jada K. Wintons, Kylon Joshua Middleton, 23 Chondraah Holmes, Corey Holmes, Jawanzaa Holmes, and 24 HaLanier Holmes; and 25 26 Whereas, it is with honor that the members of the South Carolina 27 Senate pause to reflect on the rich life of James Middleton II and 28 to acknowledge the many contributions he made throughout his 29 lifetime to his local community and the State. Now, therefore, 30 31 Be it resolved by the Senate: 32 33 That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by 34 this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon learning of the 35 death of James Middleton II of Charleston and extend heartfelt 36 sympathy to his family and many friends. 37 38 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 39 the family of Mr. James Middleton II. 40 ----XX---- 41
