Artifact Research Project

Artifact Research Project You will be conducting research on one of the artifacts you found at the Tyler Park dig. The format listed below should be followed for the written portion of this assignment.

I. Cover Page (5 pts) Include a Creative Title, a Photograph or illustration, Your name, My name, 5th Grade Humanities, and Date Submitted. II. Introduction (15 pts) These paragraphs should “set the scene”. Tell who, what, where, when, and why. Vividly describe your surroundings and feelings throughout the day of the dig. III. Description of Artifact (10 pts) Be as specific as possible in describing the material, size, designs, texture, color, markings, shape etc. of the artifact you have chosen. Include a photograph or rubbing. IV. History of YOUR Artifact (25 points) Present as much background/historical information as you can piece together about your artifact. What do you THINK it is, how & when do you THINK it was made; when & how do you THINK it was used? EXPLAIN WHY YOU THINK THIS. If you determine who made it, such as the company name, tell about the history of that company. Include anything & everything you can discover about your piece of history! V. Information on the General Category of your Artifact (15 pts) Decide what type of artifact you have, and describe the history & background (ex. What it is, how it’s made) of that GROUP of artifacts. This might include research on such categories as glass, pottery, metal, leather etc. It does not need to be in paragraph form. It can be listed information. A minimum of 3 sources required. VI. Summary of the Culture (Drawing conclusions) (15 pts) What do you think your artifact tells us about the people/person who might have used it? What conclusions can you draw about life during that time period? For example: Were the people wealthy, educated, skilled? What was meal time like? What was their family life like? What did they do for a living; for fun? Was their life easy or hard? This is your chance to create a historical fiction story about who might have used your artifact! VII. Works Consulted (5 pts) List all of your resources. Be sure to carefully follow the proper format. Keep track of each resource as you are working on your project. VIII. Interviews & Correspondence (10 pts) Include your interview questions and/or letters as well as the responses you receive (traditional or email). Also include business cards or other flyers obtained from antique stores etc. These are your notes and a record of what you learned & where you learned it.

*Note: Your research binder must be turned in with your project (include notes, rough drafts etc.)
