The Giver is a novel written by Louis Lowry. The community in which Jonas lives, is totally different than the one in which we live in our world. They see things in a completely different way than we do. It is a story that really drives you in to Jonas’ situation and feel his anger rising throughout the novel. Jonas is a character that is very normal throughout his community at the start of the book. For example, Jonas changes drastically from the beginning of the book to the end of the book since he starts from time to time to get more memories from the giver since each memory affects him in a certain way.
In the beginning of the novel Jonas is introduced as a normal kid who is in favor of the community and doesn’t go against it in any way. Jonas as well as all the other Elevens were really excited and nervous of the Ceremony of Twelve. It was a ceremony in which all of the eleven year-olds would be told what they were going to do for the rest of their lives. “All of the Elevens were excited about the event that would be coming so soon.” This quote from the beginning of the book states how he as well as all the other Elevens are excited about the ceremony of twelve meaning that they don’t have anything against the community or something that they dislike.
As the novel progresses, Jonas is changing and becoming more aware of reality and starting to think that life is not as fair for the community as it could be. "It's just that ... without the memories it's all meaningless”. This quote expresses how Jonas is becoming more aware of the memories and starts to contradict the community in which he lives in and making a point where he says that life is meaningless if the community doesn’t have access to those memories.
In the end of the novel, Jonas completely changes being fully aware of how unfair his community is. Jonas is completely blown away from watching how a release was and the harsh reality of it in which they killed the person. "The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain, it's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared." This quote from the book supports the main idea since Jonas is now completely against the community because he knows how miserable it is to not have any feelings, any colors or any music. In the end of the book, Jonas travels to another village and actually feels loved, happy and with all of those wonderful memories The Giver had told him. He had escaped from the bars of his community that had unnecessary limitations in which citizens didn’t have choices and lived meaningless lives.
Jonas changes drastically from the beginning of the story to the end. He becomes more aware of reality and tries to change things in his community.
