PCEP ACTIVITY NOTE (Person Centered Employment Plan)
Participant Name: Randy Norton
Discovery Activity – I called Randy’s mom, Jan, on 2-17-05.
Purpose – To set up a time to meet with Randy and his family.
Results (what did you learn?) – I explained that I would like to meet with Randy and his family in order to learn more about him. I described how this process will help lead to a good job for Randy. She was very agreeable and liked the idea that someone was taking a personal interest in Randy.
Next Step – Meet with Randy and his family on Friday, February 20th at 12:00PM. Randy’s mom invited me for lunch.

PCEP ACTIVITY NOTE (Person Centered Employment Plan)
Participant Name: Randy Norton
Discovery Activity- I went to Randy’s house to meet with him, his mother Jan, and his father Tom, at his home in Burlington, Kentucky as planned on February 20th.
Purpose – I wanted to learn more about Randy’s gifts, interests, skills, abilities and any other information that will help Randy find a good job. I wanted to learn more about his family and family dynamics. I also wanted to explain what the Supported Employment process would look like.
Results (what did you learn?) - Randy’s family seems very supportive of him. Randy’s dad, Tom, took off work to be at our meeting. Randy didn’t express himself very much during my visit. I will probably have to rely on observation of him and communication with the family. Randy’s family has been a strong advocate for him all of his life. Randy didn’t talk or walk on “schedule” so the family took him to different doctors and specialists to learn more about what was going on with him. The people who worked with Randy at school had low expectations, but the family did not give up. They felt he could do something (work) although they didn’t know what that would look like.
When I first arrived at the house, Randy said “Check your money, please.” Mr. Norton, Randy’s dad, explained that Randy collects certain serial numbers on different bills. Randy will trade the amount back to you if you have the bill with the number he needs. I also learned that Randy attends the Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program (TRP) at Southwood from 8:00-4:00, Monday through Friday.
Mr. Norton showed me the garage where Randy keeps items he has taken apart. He said the neighbors give Randy things because they know he loves to disassemble them. This is an active interest of Randy’s.
Randy was present the entire time, though he did not initiate any conversation today. Randy typically communicates one word at a time. For example, he may repeat one word in a statement of mine to indicate he’s heard me. I noted that I know Susan at the TRP and he repeated “Susan.”
Next Steps (time & date of next activity; what else you need to learn): – I asked Randy and his parents if I could meet with him at the TRP and talk to the staff to get more insight into Randy. I promised to contact the TRP staff and, if possible for all, coordinate a visit for Thursday, February 26th.

PCEP ACTIVITY NOTE (Person Centered Employment Plan)
Participant Name: Randy Norton
Discovery Activity: I went to visit Randy at the Therapeutic Rehabilitation Program (TRP) at Southwood on February 26th.
Purpose: I wanted to talk with staff and observe Randy. I wanted to see how Randy interacts with others, find out how Randy spends his time, and talk with the staff to get their insights about Randy.
Results (what did you learn?): The TRP is primarily for people with significant mental illness. I’m not quite sure why Randy is there since he has autism. Staff was not sure either. There are three primary “jobs” at the TRP - clerical, cooking, and cleaning. Randy does the sweeping and mopping. Susan, a staff member, says Randy is very methodical with his cleaning. He knows where all the supplies are and gets busy as soon as he gets to the program. Even if the floor doesn’t need sweeping or mopping he will do it anyway to stay busy. Susan said, “If Randy does it, then it will be done right.” Here’s an especially interesting point: When I asked about Randy’s instruction on the cleaning work, I was told that Randy would learn quickly and then precisely model the work method shown and never deviate from this. While I was there, Randy didn’t interact much with other people or staff. Of all the staff, he did seem to have a relationship with Susan. We discussed the situation with Randy’s job at Food Lion. They let him go because he hit a co-worker. Susan said she has never seen Randy act anything like that at the TRP. She said he likes things to be the same, for example, if they are to eat at 12:00 and they are running late, he will come to her and say, for example, “pizza”, until it is time to eat. My impression is that Randy is captured by his surroundings, and he is finding a way to cope by staying busy doing the only available activity. We need to explore other avenues for interests and skills. Next Steps (time & date of next activity; what else you need to learn): Mr. Norton usually takes Randy to the movies and drops him off. I will go with Randy to the movies tomorrow. Signature of ES: Lori Barrett SE Provider: Cardinal Employment Date: February 26, 2005 PCEP ACTIVITY NOTE (Person Centered Employment Plan)
Participant Name: Randy Norton
Discovery Activity: I went to the movies with Randy Friday night, 2-27. This is the only activity Randy does independently in the community. (I went on Friday, because this is his typical routine and it is important to stick with his routine.)
Purpose: I wanted to observe Randy in public places, build trust with him and observe his interactions with me and other people in the community.
Results (what did you learn?): While at the theater, Randy picked the movie. I told him the names of the different movies and he repeated the one he wanted. While waiting to get into to the movie, Randy asked someone to “check your money please.” I explained what he was doing. The person seemed okay after he knew Randy’s intent. He stayed right with me. While I got in line to get refreshments he stood back and didn’t ask anyone to check their money. It seems he will wait until he has someone to explain what he is doing before asking to check someone’s money. It’s important for me to understand my role as his agent. Randy knew the expectations of being in the theatre.
Next Steps (time & date of next activity; what else you need to learn): I will arrange to spend time at Randy’s home, in the garage, to observe him taking things apart. We planned this for Wednesday, 3-4.
