Family fun day: On Saturday the 13th Feb we will be having a family fun day at SELC between 10am- 2pm. Bring along your friends with children as well. There will be FREE sausage sizzle, Pony rides, Bouncy castle and many more activities. Plus if your friend that comes enrols with us we will give you both 2 weeks FREE fees.

Accounts: When you are paying your fees into our account PLEASE can you reference SELC and your child’s name with their account number? Jen our Business Manager has asked us to remind you that all accounts MUST have a zero balance or be in credit at all times! This means when you receive your invoice every Monday, the balance must be zero or have a –minus in front. She wants to thank those super vigilant parents who ensure this happens, it is greatly appreciated. If you do have an outstanding debt with us, this must be cleared by the end of November at the latest or you will risk us removing your child from our roll for next year.

The warmer weather is here and our sun smart policy is now in place, so please Remember to SLIP, SLOP, SLAP and WRAP. We ask that you support us by following a few helpful things;

 Sunscreen your child before they come, this helps with the room to run smoother in the busy period of the day. Most primary schools have a policy that they will need to be sun screened before they arrive as well. We do have a sunscreen station at the centre if you are running short on time.

 Have their shoulders covered, Children’s skin is much more delicate than ours, and sun smart suggest that they wrap up.

 No jandals- Please ensure that your child is wearing appropriate footwear for running, climbing and other active physical activity. As per our enrolment information, we would ask that jandals stay home please.

 Always bring a hat and a water bottle- No hat No play outside.

We have red Southbrook hats for sale for $10 each if you do not have one and would like one. Please speak to Hannah if you would like to order one.

We have changed our brand of sunscreen

Ultra Block sunscreen is specially designed, SPF 30+, water resistant and is ok for people with sensitive skin it also has aloe Vera and vitamin E.

If you do not wish for your child to use this or your child has a specific allergy, please provide a labelled sunscreen you wish them to use instead.

Healthy Heart Award This Year we will be applying to upgrade our healthy heart award to GOLD! Hope you can help us to achieve this goal. We will be giving out a certificate to the parents with the healthiest lunch box every week. We will also be sending home healthy alternatives list in your children’s lunch boxes to give you some ideas. Playball Thursday 10:45-11:45 Playball is starting back up again this Thursday 4th Feburary 2016. If you would like to sign up please email Ryan at [email protected] or put your name and email down on the sheet by the office. Survey Feedback Thank you to everyone that brought back your parents surveys. Your feedback will be used to help drive our annual and strategic plan this year. One planned review we plan to do this year is our outdoor environment. Please see our new annual plan up in the hall way for further information or ask Hannah.

Medical forms: If your child has an allergy, anaphylaxis or asthma please let us know ASAP. An action plan must be completed by a Doctor and a Category 3 Medicine form to ensure we can provide medication to your child as deemed necessary. Hannah will be checking this termly from now on and will ask you if the medication is still required.

A big welcome to all our new families, Laura and Taylor in the Kiwi room Bruce in the Tui room and Maddie in the Pukeko room, it’s great to have you join us. A big ‘see ya later and good luck’ to all our families that have left us to head off on their next step of primary school. Welcome back to the kiwi room! I hope that you all had a great Christmas and New Year. I have been hearing lots of stories about holidays and presents and look forward to continuing to hear more.

Children in transition:Wow we have had a lot of children join us and leave us over the last few weeks. We would like to warmly welcome/Haere mai Laura, Taylor and Elise who are all settling in well and we look forward to getting to know them and their whānau/family better in the coming weeks.

We would like to farewell Mila P, Beauan, Declan and Nyko who have begun their exciting adventure in the Tui room. We wish them all the best and know that they will have lots of fun.

Focus of our classroom:We will be starting a new class focus in February of Heuristic and natural play. We will be introducing the children to authentic play materials allowing them to explore and interact with them in order to develop and extend their knowledge and understanding of the natural and material world they live in. Teachers will support the development of this understanding by role modeling how to use equipment, linking equipment with home and engaging in conversations with the children. If you would like to provide resources such as light weight pots and pans, cup holders, small brushes you have spare at home please talk to one of the teachers we would love to know what you have to offer.

Kiwi Teaching Team news:As some of you may already know Agnes will be covering in the Pukeko room from the 15th February for four weeks. We will miss her however would like to reassure you that your children will be well looked after by the rest of the team.

Reminders and extra information:

 Please apply sun screen to your children when you drop them off no matter how the weather looks as it has been changing quite quickly.

 Due to the unpredictable weather over the last couple of months we ask that you provide your child with a range of clothing options so we can ensure they are comfortable no matter what the weather does.

Many thanks  The Kiwi Room Teachers. Tui Room Teacher/Kaiako: Libby Date: February 2016

New Tamariki who have started:

A warm welcome to the Tui Room goes to: Mila, Declan, Nyko, Beauen and Bruce. We are excited to have you here with us in the Tui Room, and can’t wait to get to know you and your families, as you continue to settle in.

Children who have moved on:

We wish the following children and their families a very fond farewell Jordyn, Danica,

Millie, Marley, and Jack. All the best in the Pukeko Room, we can see that you are loving it over there!

Planning:

This month in the Tui Room we were working on the disposition “belonging”. We decided

to work on this disposition with the children as we have a lot of new Tamariki in the Tui Room, and we also wanted to help children settle back in after the holiday break.

Some of the learning experiences that we have planned this month are learning about the world around us by having a Waitangi day morning tea, and celebrating Chinese New

Year. We are also going to be making a family/ whanau wall, learning about our bodies and making friends. On 18th Feb we will be hosting a morning tea for Mikayla to

celebrate her upcoming wedding. You are all more than welcome to come and attend.

Reminder to parents: Please remember a morning tea container each day with healthy snacks that your child can eat for morning tea time, we are no longer doing shared fruit. As it is now term 1 we now apply sunscreen to your child after lunch before outside play. Please ensure that as the parents you are applying their sunscreen in the mornings either at home or when you arrive at Preschool. Sunscreen is provided in the entrance. Please also ensure that your child had a sunhat in their bag as it is starting to get pretty hot out there and as per our policy if they do not have a hat then they will be unable to play outside. Many thanks  The Tui Room Teachers. PUKEKO ROOM

Teacher/Kaiako: Sheree Date: January/February 2016

A warm welcome back to 2016 to all the children and families of the Pukeko Room.

New Tamariki who have started: A warm welcome to the Pukeko Room goes to Maddie Moir, Jack Emery, Millie Pomare-Edwards, Masen Riach, Kieran Haverkort, Jordyn Burberry, Shea Hill, Danica Horn, and Marley Hindson, we look forward to supporting you on your journey of learning.

Tamariki we have fare welled: We would like to wish our five year olds Marissa Sammut-Cole, Sam McCormick, Noah Smith and their families all the very best as they continue their journey of learning at primary School.

Focus of our classroom presently:  With a large number of children transitioning into the Pukeko Room we will be focusing on providing a sense of belonging and well-being for all our new children, Along with building new relationships and exploring their new environment.  We will also be encouraging communication reflecting ‘Our Holidays’. If you do have some photos/story or have completed your child’s holiday page in their profile book, we would love to see it.

Special Events/Activities that have occurred:  Libby McIntosh will be on placement at a different Centre for four weeks starting the Monday the 15th of February. For these four weeks we will be welcoming Agnes Winter for the Kiwi room into the Pukeko room team.

Reminders for parents:  Please bring your child’s profile book ASAP with their holiday page completed  Please bring in a family photo for the wall. This helps your child to have a sense of belonging and well-being in our room when they can see their family on the wall and share it with their teachers and friends  Please ensure your child can independently put on and take off the shoes they wear to preschool  Remember to send your child with a bag big enough for all of your child’s belongings  Remember a named sun hat, everyday please… (No hat = no outside play!!)

 Have plenty of spare named clothes in your child’s bag

 A named drink bottle every day is important for your busy child

 In the Pukeko room we do a morning tea snack box so please remember to send this along with your child’s lunch

 If your child has yoghurt for lunch please remember to pack a teaspoon in their lunchbox.  When packing your child’s lunch PLEASE consider the nutritional value of pre-packaged foods, as many of these are high in both salt and sugar. We would also like parents to check that their child can open and manage these packets. We are encouraging and promoting self-help skills in the Pukeko Room and finding many children cannot even open these packets independently.

Many thanks  The Pukeko Room Teachers.
