2 Zieske Families Search Steinke Family Analysis 24 April 2008 Updated 11 March 2009

The Steinke family of Stieglitz is linked, through marriage, to the Fasbender Zieski group and, of course, all descendants of Johann Ziske (Zieski) & Louise Steinke (who in the records report are married 12 Feb 1847 in Stieglitz), share common ancestry.

Louise Steinke, wife of Johann Ziske (Zieski), was born in Stieglitz on 12 March 1828 to Martin Steinke and Rosina Warnke. Her sponsors are Christine Vielhaber and Peter Warnke.

Here is what I have seen and learned re: the Steinke Family name:

1. The Steinke family name is in Putzighauland, Putzig and Stieglitz. Martin is a common first name in these families. For this reason, we have to be careful in identifying the correct parents of Louise Steinke, wife of Johann Ziske (Zieski).

2. We know from her marriage record, that Louise Steinke's father is named Martin Steinke. This Martin Steinke is a deceased farmer from Stieglitz at the time of his daughter’s marriage to Johann Ziske (Zieski) on 12 Feb 1847.

3. Louise Steinke is age 19 at her marriage on 12 Feb 1847. Therefore, she is born about 1828.

4. A Martin Steinke in Putzighauland has five wives and by them, seven known children, all born in Putzighauland as follows: Anna Christina, 8 Jan 1813; Johann Michael, 9 Sep 1815; Justina Wilhelmine, 27 Nov 1818; Anna Louise, 5 March 1821; Hennriette, 26 May 1824; Anna Susanna, 18 Sep 1826; and Eva Rosina, 3 Feb 1833. Few of these Steinke children of Putzighauland are born about 1828 and none are named Louise.

5. The known wives of Martin Steinke of Putzighauland are:

a. Dorothea Louise Mathwicken (or such), mother of Anna Christina. This 1st wife died 16 May 1813;

b. Dorothea Sophia Lehmann, mother of Johann Michael; Justina Wilhelmine; Anna Louisa; and Hennriette. This 2nd wife died 11 May 1825.

c. Maria Elisabeth Klingbeil, mother of Anna Susanna. The Marriage of Martin Steinke & Maria Elisabeth Klingbeil is 7 Sep 1825. Maria’s death date is unknown but is very likely before Martin marries Anna Elisabeth Klingbeil. Maria is Martin’s 3rd wife.

3 d. Anna Elisabeth Klingbeil, mother of Eva Rosina. This 4th wife died 18 Oct 1837. Note: The record has Maria Elisabeth Klingbeil as the mother of Anna Susanna and Anna Elisabeth Klingbeil as the mother of Eva Rosina. However, I have found only a death, 18 Oct 1837, for Anna Elisabeth Steinke nee. Klingbeil.

There is the possibility that Maria Elisabeth Klingbeil and Anna Elisabeth Klingbeil are one and the same person. If they are not, they very well could be sisters or cousins.

e. Martin Steinke married Anna Christina Holz, wife five, on 4 April 1844. She is called Steinke because of a prior marriage to a Steinke. It is in this 4 April 1844 marriage record that we learn that the bride, Anna Christina Holz, of Stieglitiz, becomes the 5th wife of the widower, Martin Steinke of Putzighauland. At this marriage to Martin Steinke, Anna Christina Holz is a widow of a man of whose last name is also Steinke.

6. This situation leaves unaccounted for, the childbirth we search: Louise, born about 1828.

7. I have very likely found the correct Louise Steinke. If so, Louise Steinke, wife of Johann Ziske (Zieski) was born in Stieglitz on 12 March 1828 to Martin Steinke and Rosina Warnke. This record is in the reports under Other Communities, Stieglitz. Her sponsors are Christine Vielhaber and Peter Warnke.

8. Another Louise Steinke, born also in Stieglitz but in 1829 with an 8 August Baptism is not likely the Louise Steinke we search. However, this other Louise Steinke could very well be a cousin of Louise Steinke born 12 March 1828. The parents of this second Louise Steinke are Gottlieb Steinke and Susanna Schulz. Her sponsors are Johann Warnke and Anna Rosena Warnke.

9. A third Martin Steinke of Stieglitz and his wife, Maria Mueller are the parents of Wilhelmine, born 3 July 1828 in Stieglitz. This child’s sponsors are Elisabeth Müeller and Maria Steinke. This is not the Martin Steinke, father of Louise Steinke who married Johann Ziske (Zieski).

10. We know from Louise Steinke’s marriage to Johann Ziske (Zieski) on 12 Feb 1847, that Louise Steinke’s father is a deceased farmer of Stieglitz and his name is Martin Steinke.

11. A Martin Steinke died in Stieglitz on 11 March 1844. This is the only Martin Steinke death in Stieglitz for 1844-1847, the period that covers also the marriage of Martin Steinke of Putzighauland to Anna Christina Holz on 4 April 1844 and the marriage of Louise Steinke & Johann Ziske (Zieski) on 12 Feb 1847.

4 12. This deceased Martin Steinke was age 46 at death on 11 March 1844. His parents are Johann Steinke & Maria nee Imm.

13. Based on his 3rd and 5th marriage records, Martin Steinke of Putzighauland would have been about age 54 had he died on 11 March 1844. Also, Martin Steinke of Putzighauland could not have died on 11 March 1844 and also married on 4 April 1844. That eliminates as the father of Louise Steinke.

14. It is very likely that these two men named Martin Steinke are not the same person. They may, however, be related.

15. Very likely, the Martin Steinke of Stieglitz who died on 11 March 1844 at age 46 is the father of Louise Steinke who married Johann Ziske (Zieski). It is unlikely, that Martin Steinke of Putzighauland was her father. It also would be impossible for Martin Steinke, father of Wilhelmine born 3 July 1828 in Stieglitz, about four months after Louise, to be her father.

16. It is possible that the Steinke family group of Putzighauland and the Steinke family group of Stieglitz are related. It is also possible that Martin Steinke of Putzighauland’s 5th wife, widow Anna Christina nee. Holz, formerly married to a Steinke, was married to Louise Steinke’s father at his death but is a subsequent marriage and not the mother of Louise.

12 A Picture of Four Families from Our Zieske (Zieski, Ziske) Research

22 February 2008

This paper summarizes what I know about our research for the following parents and their children. The “hot” links below bring you to each section.

There are two parts for each couple: (1) Descendant Chart and (2) Prussian Church Record Extraction & Notes.

Each part is a report from my Family Tree Maker genealogy files. I have typed in basic data and have also copied relevant FAMILY FINDS from my regular Progress Report to Family Tree Maker. The record should be the same or very close to the same in each location.

Michael Zieski (Ziske) & Anna Maria Krenz Primary Fasbender Zieski Ancestors Descendant Chart Prussian Church Record Extraction & Notes

Michael Breitkreutz & Anna Rosina Pulseuss In-laws of Johann, son of Michael Zieski & Anna Maria Krenz Descendant Chart Prussian Church Record Extraction & Notes

Michael Zieske & Anna Christina Schulz Primary Bloedow-Strasburg Zieske Ancestors Descendant Chart Prussian Church Record Extraction & Notes

Andreas Schulz & Susanna Zibart Parents of wife of- and in-laws of Michael Zieske Descendant Chart Prussian Church Record Extraction & Notes

There are, of course, more families in our research. But these four families stand out as having the largest Prussian-based research attention. For some of these, older ancestor records are found in the Progress Report.

Notes for JOHANN ZISKE: 3 Marriages (church record verified):

MARRIAGE: 1847 Feb 12: Vol 2, Page 47, Line 3. Stieglitz. The bachelor, JOHANN ZISKE, son of deceased farmer Michael Ziske from Putzig was married in the church with the young woman, LOUISE STEINKE, daughter of the deceased farmer Martin Steinke in Stieglitz. The groom was unmarried and indepependant, the bride was likewise unmarried and under guardianship. The groom is age 26; the bride is age

17 19. The religion of the bridegroom and bride is evangelisch. Consent for the bride (was given at) Schönlanke (on) 15 January 1847. Note: Family Find. Fasbender. this is Johann Ziske (Zieski) of the Fasbender Zieski group. This record is a translation by Ken Neumann. This marriage appears to have taken place in Stieglitz, the traditional location being the brides home area. The record appears in a section which includes a group of communities: Ruenau, Stieglitz, Putzig and Putzighauland. Because the record appears to be under Stieglitz and the bride’s father could be from Stieglitz, I am inclined to believe the record is also for that community. Regardless, this is the correct marriage record. Ken Neumann adds, “Schönlanke was a major city in the region and probably had a court or judge where the bride could receive the consent to get married. Sometimes marriage records will mention a court or judge specifically, but here there is only the place and date, not precisely who gave the consent.” FHL 0808118: Czarnikau Mixed Parishes (1846-1847): Runau, Stieglitz, Putzig and Putzighauland. Record likely of Stieglitz. Pictures 4952-4957 taken 8 February 2008.

+MARRIAGE: 1856 Jan 6: Page 266: Line 2: JOHANN ZISKE & ANNA ROSINA BREITKREUTZ. He is age 34, she is age 22. Married in Putzig. Johann is independent. Consent for the bridegroom [at] Schönlanke the 29th of October 1855. Note: Family Find. Fasbender. Is the 2nd Marriage of Johann Ziske, son of Michael Zieski & Anna Maria Krenz. Translation and Comments by Ken Neumann: the groom apparently needed to get some official OK since he had been married and it needed to be officially made certain that he was indeed a true widower and able to get married. Michael Breitkreutz is a “Leibgedinger”, one whom I understand to be one who is guaranteed a house and income in return for turning over his estate to the heir of his estate, usually the most senior of his children. This procedure happened to take care of retired people. Is something there that says it is not the first marriage. Yes, there is—where the first line reads “wird der Häusler Johann Ziske,”, you can note the smaller words above “Häusler Johann” which are meant to be an insert between those two words, “u. Wittwer” (“und Wittwer”, and widower). So it tells us that Johann was a widower as he enters this second marriage. FHL 0741850 Vol 3: Putzig (1855-1865). Pictures 4711-4712 taken 11 Jan 2008.

+BIRTH: 1833 Nov 26: 8 Dec: Page 44: Line 10: Child: ANNA ROSINA: Father, Michael Breitkreutz; Mother, Anna Rosina Pulfuss. Father’s occupation is “Einlieger” (resident, similar to “Einwohner”). Sponsors: Johann Steinke (a Holländer) and Jungfer (young woman) Maria Elisabeth Ziemann. Note: Family Find. Fasbender. This is the first of the sisters that marries Johann Zieski born 1820 of the Fasbender Zieski. FHL 0741850 Vol 1: Putzighauland (1808-1854). Pictures 4761-4767 taken 18 Jan 2008.

The groom is age 26; the bride is age 19. The religion of the bridegroom and bride is evangelisch. Consent for the bride (was given at) Schönlanke (on) 15 January 1847.

25 Note: Family Find. Fasbender. this is Johann Ziske (Zieski) of the Fasbender Zieski group.

40 Arndt (Arnd) Family Search

9 Feb 2008 (updated 2 Mar 2008)

This paper proposes that an Arndt family in America, (ARND in Prussia) has a Zieske connection in both America and Prussia and may, in fact, be the link that connects our Zieske groups. [2 Mar 2009 note: this paper is now under review as of 2 March 2009. There is for certain an Arndt connection. But the Civil War Veteran, Frederick Arndt may not be who we propose he is by birth record. The child born 10 March 1846 in Putzig may have died in Putzig. However, the connection and relationship between Frederick Arndt, the Civil War Veteran, to Zieske is real in the USA. Only the birth and baptism location, date and parents are in question.]

The Facts and the Hunches.

Fact: Anna Christina Schulz was born to Andreas Schultz & (Anna) Susanna Zibart, in Putzig, on 31 March 1821. Sponsors are Gottlieb Beutler; and Ana Maria Zellmern Schalmen.

Fact: Gottfried Ziske is born to Michael Ziske & Anna Maria Krentzen on 3 August 1818. Sponsors are Christoph Müller and Anna Maria Zibart.

Fact: Michael Zieske born 1816, on 15 April 1842, married Anna Christina Schulz born 31 March 1821, Putzig, in Putzig. Michael’s father, Johann Zieske is living in Ascherbude at the time. Anna’s father, Andreas Schulz, of Putzig, is deceased.

Hunch Fact: Michael Zieske born 1816 had a brother, Gottlieb Zieske.

Fact: A Gottlieb Zieske & Anna Rosina Arnd had a child, Michael, born 26 Sep 1846 in Ascherbude. Sponsors are Henriette Zieske; August Zieske; and Wilhelm Lubitz. Ascherbude is 8-9 km northwest of Putzig.

Fact: This Gottlieb Zieske & Anna Rosina Arnd also had another child, Wilhelmine, born 28 Feb 1844 in Ascherbude. The sponsors are Rosina Blüm; Louisa Zieske and Wilhelm Lübitz.

Hunch Fact: The child, Michael born 26 Sep 1846, born to Gottlieb Zieske & Anna Rosina Arnd, is very likely our Michael Zieske born 26 Sep 1847 who married Wilhelmina Sonnenberg, per family record.

Hunch: This Gottlieb Zieske’s wife, Anna Rosina Arnd, also had a brother whose name is Johann Arndt.

Hunch: Anna Rosina Arnd’s brother, Johann, married and that couple had a child, Frederick Arnd.

41 Fact: Frederick Arndt, Civil War Veteran, came to America with his parents at age 9 (about 1855) and they settled on a farm near Princeton, Wisconsin. Later, the family moved to Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

Fact: Frederick Arndt was born 6 March 1846 in Germany per his death certificate. He died 26 July 1916 in Courtland, Nicollet County, MN. His military record states he was born in Prussia. His father is John. Actually, Putzig church record has this Frederick Arndt born in Putzig on 10 March 1846. Parents are: Joh Gottfried Arndt & Christina Herzberg.

Fact: Frederick Arndt served in the U. S. Civil War from Wisconsin in the same Company D as Michael Zieske (Siskey is his military name) born 1846 or 1847. Frederick Arndt is listed as born in Prussia in military record and born in Germany per his obituary. Both Frederick and Michael have Princeton, WI as their residence.

Fact: Frederick Arndt the Civil War Veteran married Fredericka Schauhardt in 1869 in Wisconsin per his Minnesota obituary. They were likely married in the Fox Lake-Beaver Dam, Dodge county area. But we have no record of the location.

Fact: Frederick Arndt & Fredericka Schauhardt had a child, Fred G. Arndt, born 11 December 1878 in Wisconsin. Fox Lake, Dodge County is his native home per his obituary. Other children of this couple in 1880, Trenton twp, Dodge cty, WI are: Augusta age 13; Emma age 9; Anna age 7; Clara age 5; and Christian age 2.

Fact: Frederick Arndt, wife, Frederica and family moved to near Cambria, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. This area is just (you can walk over or swim) across the Minnsota River from Courtland, Nicollet County, MN where Michael Zieske born 1846/1847 and Michael Zieske born 1816 lived. Michael Zieske 1816’s sons, John and Frederick Gottfried, also Civil War Veterans also lived in the immediate area.

Fact: On January 11, 1908, In Sleepy Eye, Brown County, Minnesota, Fred G. Arndt born 11 December 1878, married Helen Zieske, granddaughter of Michael Zieske born 1816 & Anna Christina Schulz. This is an Arndt family marriage into Zieske.

Fact: A Christ Arndt of Courtland, MN is the informant for the death certificate for Frederick Arndt born 6 March 1846 in Germany and died 26 July 1916 in Courtland, MN. This Christ Arndt is likely the eldest son and as such also a brother of Fred G. Arndt.

End.

42 Here is a possible genealogy of these facts and hunches known to date:

Johann Zieske of Ascherbude (name of father of Michael Zieske 1816) m. Mother Zieske 1. Michael Zieske born 1816 m. Anna Christina Schulz born 1821 in Putzig (her father is Andreas Schulz, mother is Anna Susanna Zibart) 1. Frederick Gottfried Zieske b. 1845 in Putzig m. Augusta Richter 1. Helen Zieske born 1879 in Courtland, MN m. Fred G.Arndt born 1878 in Wisconsin, probably Dodge county 2. Gottlieb Zieske (person exists, is a hunch that he is a brother of Michael 1816) m. Anna Rosina Arnd (these are verified parents of this boy, whoever he is) a. Michael Zieske born 26 Sep 1846 in Ascherbude (record found) m. Wilhelmenia Sonnenberg (she fits if we have the correct Michael) Christian Arnd m. Mother (name unknown) 1. Anna Rosina Arnd m. Gottlieb Zieske 1. Michael Zieske born 26 Sep 1846 in Ascherbude m. Wilhelmenia Sonnenberg 2. Joh. Gottfried Arndt (known parents of this Frederick Arndt born 1846) m. Christina Herzberg 1. Frederick Arndt born in Putzig as Fredrich Wilhelm m. Frederica Schauhardt (married in Wisconsin) 1. Fred G. Arndt born 1878 in Wisconsin, probably Dodge county m. Helen Zieske born 1879 in Courtland, MN

Discussion. If this genealogy is correct, then the elusive Michael Zieske born 1847’s parents have been found and the nephew/uncle relationship between he and Michael Zieske born 1816, is established. IF.

Additionally, if some connection can be established between the Beaver Dam Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin “Fasbender” Zieske family group and the Fred Arndt family group who also lived in that area in Trenton Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin, very near by, then that may further demonstrate at least one way how our Zieske families are connected.

43 More Information that may Support the Possibility.

1. Fred Arndt Sr. born 6 or 10 March 1846 Obituary.

Obituary: Last Saturday afternoon the remains of Fred Arndt, Sr., father of Fred Arndt and Mrs. F. E. Beech of this city, were laid at rest in the cemetery near Courtland. The good man who had suffered for ten months with spinal trouble, which the various agencies of medical skill had been unable to cure, passed to the Great Beyond Wednesday evening, July 26th, at his home at Courtland.

The deceased was born (6 March 1846) in Germany seventy years ago, he emigrated (sic) to America with his parents at the age of nine years, settling on a farm near Princeton, Wis., later they moved to Beaver Dam, in the same state. In 1869 Mr. Arndt was married to Miss Fredericka Schauhardt, who still survives him. In 1887 the family moved to Minnesota, settling near Cambria and living there until ten years ago when the aged couple moved to Courtland to spend their declining days at ease. Eleven children were born to this estimable couple, four of whom are dead. Those living are: Mrs. F. E. Beech and Fred Arndt of Sleepy Eye, Mrs. Elmer Pavey of Oakfield, Wis., Mrs. Wm. Stobbs of Ogilvie, Minn., Mrs. Ira Chapman, living near here and Chas. And Jennie Arndt of Courtland. The Herald-Dispatch joins in expressing sympathy to the bereaved children in the loss of their noble and loving father.

Published in the Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch, Sleepy Eye, MN, August 4, 1916, front page, column 2.

Note: While the obituary does not acknowledge his Civil War Veteran status, this clearly is the Civil War Veteran, Frederick Arndt who served with Michael Zieske out of Wisconsin.

Fred Arndt Sr.’s death certificate states that he was born 6 March 1846. His father is John Arndt, born in Germany. The name and birth location of the mother is listed as “don’t know”. Christ Arndt of Courtland, likely a son, is the informant. Per the Putzig Church Record, Fred Arndt Sr. was born in Putzig on 10 March 1846. His father is Joh. Gottfried Arndt; his mother is Christina Herzberg.

2. Fred G. Arndt born 1878 Obituary.

Fred G. Arndt lived in Sleepy Eye, MN for many years. He married into the Southern Minnesota Zieske group. Here is his obituary found by Otto Bloedow and Otto’s comments. The Fred G. Arndt of Sleepy Eye married a daughter, Helen Zieske, of Frederick Gottfried & Augusta (Richter) Zieske:

44 Services for Fred Arndt to Be Saturday

Published in the ?. Handwriting “May 1, 1962” Obituary furnished by Marjorie Jean [Zieske] Meyer, March 16, 2002.

(Otto’s Comments) Fred,

Cambria is next to Courtland-This is how he would have met Helen. Lucille was first cousin to my mother-and they were close. Wish I had spoken with her more. She was in the know.

MN Death Certificate Record Information: Arndt, Frederick G., born 11 Dec 1878; Out of State; Mother Maiden Name: na. Certificate # 1962-MN-007605, died 1 May 1962, Hennepin County, MN.

This is the Fred Arndt that married Great Grandpa Fred Zieske's daughter, Helen.

3. Fred Arndt born 6 or 10 March 1846 and son, Fred G. Arndt lived in Dodge County, WI in 1880.

45 Fred Arndt Sr. age 34, and family are in Trenton twp, Dodge cty, WI in 1880. A William Arndt appears to be next door, is six years younger and could be related as sibling or other. Son, Frederick age 1 is with the Fred & Frederica Arndt family. Both parents (and their parents) and 1 child, Augusta age 13, are listed as born in Prussia.

Fred G. Arndt of Sleepy Eye, MN, per the above Obituary, is a native of Fox Lake, Dodge County, Wisconsin and born on 11 Dec 1878. This census record, while for Trenton Township isn’t inconsistent. Trenton Township is adjacent to Fox Lake Township and area residents would likely say they were from the area Village of Fox Lake or from the Fox Lake (lake) region.

4. Frederick Arndt Inconsistencies Addressed.

46 Is Fred Arndt age 34 in the Wisconsin, Dodge County, Trenton Township Census for 1880 the Frederick Arndt who served in the Civil War and with Michael Siskey (Zieske)? Very likely.

However, there are some problems with drawing this conclusion.

Age 34 of the Fred Arndt in the 1880 Wisconsin Census fits perfectly with what would be the age of the Civil War Veteran Frederick Arndt in 1880. But the 13-year old daughter, Augusta, is a problem because she is listed in the 1880 Wisconsin Census as born in Prussia. Their next child, Emma, is born in Wisconsin and she is age 9 in 1880.

What might explain this? We know that Frederick Arndt the U. S. Civil War Veteran first came to the United States with his parents about 1855 at age nine. His 13-year old daughter may be recorded incorrectly in the 1880 USA Census as born in Prussia. Or, the child could be the mother’s by another father and that both the mother, Frederica and daughter, Augusta, were in Prussia about 1867 and came to America with or without this other husband/father who maybe died. Or, after the U. S. Civil War, Frederick Arndt could have returned to Prussia, married and then returned again to the United States with his wife and child, Augusta, sometime before the next child is born in Wisconsin in about 1871. It is also possible that Fred Arndt married the widow of a fellow Civil War Veteran who died in the war. And, their no doubt could be other explanations.

Our concern here is not whether Frederick Arndt’s daughter, Augusta, was born in Prussia, or, whether Frederick Arndt’s wife, Frederica, was married prior. But rather, we are concerned whether we have the correct Frederick Arndt, Civil War Veteran who ultimately ends up living and dying in Cambria and Courtland, Minnesota. I believe we have the correct man and the correct family. And from his obituary, where it says he marries “Miss Fredericka Schauhardt” in 1869, it appears also that she had no prior marriage.

5. A Christian F. Arndt and Family are in Minnesota in 1905.

Here, below, in 1905, in Minnesota, Goodhue County, Hay Creek is Christian F. Arndt age 59. This man could be a brother, even twin, of Fred Arndt who married Frederica, parents of Fred G. Arndt. Note the names of Christian & Mary Arndt’s girls (Anna, Emma, Clara) and compare them to the girl names (Emma, Anna, Clara) in the above record for Fred & Frederica Arndt. But we have no proof of relationship, only the record.

47 6. Fredrick Arndt Age 1 of Wisconsin in 1880 is Likely Fred G. Arndt of Minnesota.

Is Fred Arndt age 1 in Dodge County, Wisconsin in 1880, son of Fred & Frederica Arndt, the Fred G. Arndt of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota? Very likely, yes.

Here is the record for Fred Arndt Sr.age 59 and wife, Frederika age 59, with son, Fred age 29 in the 1905 Minnesota Territorial Census, Nicollet County, Courtland:

The younger and older Freds are of the correct age and Fred Sr.’s wife is Frederika in both Wisconsin 1880 Census and Minnesota 1905 Census and her age is also correct.

The record shows that the younger Fred was born in Germany. But that error could be recorder error, or, assumption since both parents are born there. We are certain we have the correct Fred G. Arndt in 1905.

The younger Fred is also listed as a Brakeman for occupation. Fred Sr. is a farmer. This Fred Arndt Sr. is the Civil War Veteran, Frederick Arndt, born 6 or 10 March 1846 in Putzig, Czarnikau, Posen, Prussia.

Conclusion: This establishes a Zieske-Arndt family relationship in America; it does not yet establish such in Prussia.

The Minnesota Arndt family described is the Arndt family of the 1880 Wisconsin Census for Dodge County, descendants of the U. S. Civil War Veteran, Frederick Arndt (Fredrich Wilhelm Arndt) born 10 March 1846 in Putzig, Czarnikau, Posen, Prussia to Joh.Gottfried Arndt & Christina Herzberg. Whether this Arndt family knew or were friends with the Dodge County Fasbender Zieski and other of their relatives remains to be seen.

48 The Wilhelm Zieske Discussion 14 January 2008

Ken, Valerie, Otto:

In studying the Wilhelm Zieske issue, I have detected an apparent family relationship in Putzig records. This new relationiship also leads to a possible (unproven) resolve of our Wilhelm Zieske issue.

In my latest Progress Report, Volume 2, Putzig Births: From the Putzig Births I have recorded, I believe I have detected a family relationship. The two birth/baptism records that relate are listed below in paragraphs #1 and #2.; the third discussion relevant to this is the Email from Ken Neumann that introduced his Wilhelm Zieske. That information is at paragraph #3.below the two birth/baptism records. These are included below as references should you want to know more.

Bear in mind that it can be dangerous, without further supporting evidence, to assume that a name seen twice in different records is the same person.

Here is the family situation as I see it: Two fathers in my Volume 2, Putzig Births appear to be brothers: Michael Ziske & Gottlieb Ziske. A third man, Christoff Müller, appears as a witness/godparent for at least one child of each of the (presumed) brothers. A Gottlieb Ziske is a witness/godparent of one of Christoff Müller's children; a Michael Ziske appears as a witness/godparent of another of Christoff Müller's children. Also, but not as clear, an Anna Christina Z(L)iske listed as a co-witness/godparent for a child of Michael Ziske & Anna Maria Krenz, along with Christoff Müller, could be Anna Christina Koplin (Koppliner), wife of Gottlieb Ziske. This Anna Maria Posehnen (or such), could be a sister of Michael Ziske & Gottlieb Ziske. Not all children have been identified. There are other witness/godparents.

The parents we are talking about are: Michael Ziske & Anna Maria Krenz; Gottlieb Ziske & Anna Christina Koplin (er); and Christoff Müller & Anna Maria Posehnen (or such). In other words, Michael Ziske & Anna Maria Krenz are Valerie's ancestors and, by deduction, Gottlieb Ziske could be a brother of Michael Ziske. Now that the apparent relationships have been pointed out, if you quickly review my Putzig Births records you will yourself begin to see what I described.

Continuing. Michael Ziske & Anna Maria Krenz children names are: Gottfried (1818); Johann (1820); Maria (1823); Michael (1826); and Wilhelm 1829). So far, we know four (4) of the children names of Gottfried Ziske & Anna Christina Koplin(er): Eva Rosina (1824); Johan Gottlieb 1827); Wilhelm (1831); and Wilhelmine (1834), but not necessarily complete.

Here is the possible Wilhelm Zieske I see: We do not yet have any evidence of Wilhelm born 1829 to Michael Ziske & Anna Maria Krenz, past birth/baptism. He may have died as an infant and a second Wilhelm born. I will attempt to find that answer

49 in the microfilm. There also may be more brothers in this Ziske family I have created and those brothers may also have had a Wilhelm. However, based on what we have at this time, the Wilhelm born 1831 to Gottfried Ziske & Anna Christina Koplin(er) is a candidate to be the Wilhelm Zieske who Ken Neumann is tracking.

The year and age would be correct for this Wilhelm born 1831. However, we currently have no link back to a specific location in Germany or Prussia for Wilhelm Zieske who lived in McLeod County, MN and ultimately died in Ida Township, Douglas County, MN.

But lets say we get the death record and the parents are Gottfried Ziske & Anna Christina Koplin(er). This would then answer the question of who John Zieski born 1864 (Valerie's Zieski) came to in Minnesota and why. If all the above were correct and true, then Wilhelm Zieske of McLeod and later Douglas County, Minnesota and Johann Zieski born 1820, father of John Zieske born 1864, would have been 1st cousins. And John Zieske born 1864's relationship to Wilhelm Zieske of Minnesota would have been one generation removed, 1st cousin, once removed, with John Zieske being the younger. In a close extended family relationship a cousin is a cousin and you are all family.

I propose that this will ultimately be the picture of our solution to our Wilhelm Zieske issue. But before we can conclude this we need to trace Wilhelm Zieske of Minnesota back into Prussia.

I am very interested in your thoughts about this...... at your convenience.

Fred,

Thanks for your reply. You wrote 21 Dec 2007—

Howard Zieske. Yes, a Zieske connection is possible.

. . . This northern Minnesota Zieske group was in other areas too, but so far as in Minnesota, only Northern Minnesota. So, Orr is a distinct possibility. . . . If that family can connect somehow back to Hubbard county or other I have mentioned, then there could be a family link. If you can provide me with some ancestry of the Zieske person you have then I could check it against what I have for our northern Minnesota Zieske. If the family came from one of those areas in Wisconsin I mention then they could be a descendant of either the southern or northern Minnesota Zieske I have. Check out the Lisko-Zieske part of our WEB site and see if anything there clicks. http://www.norhemian.com/0630zieske002.html Maybe point your Zieske person to the WEB page. These pages describe our quest connect families and our connection to Prussia and Putzig.

Fred, I checked with the link you provided, and I didn’t see any conclusive connection as yet. But there is mention of a Wilhelm Zieske, b 27 Mar 1829, Putzig, to the Michael Zieske and Anna Maria Krenz b ca 1795. The Wilhelm Zieske I found is just a couple or more years off of the date. In 1880 and 1885 he is said to be b ca 1832, while in 1870 and 1875 censuses he is b ca 1835. But the family I found seems to be off by themselves without any other Zieskes in the neighborhoods they inhabited.

Since I wrote I managed to find the families from 1870 on to close to the present time. Interestingly, they even resided in the main county I am researching in MN, Stearns County, from at least 1905 to 1930. That’s where they hooked up with my WIEWEL connection. But they especially lived in McLeod and Douglas Counties. After doing a lot of the key research, I found some good detailed listings for the family on Ancestry.com One World (about 4 submitters put the names there including Roberta Zieske and Vicki Steen). I’ll give you the descendants of the

51 oldest family I’ve found so far, and see if you can run with that to connect them up with any other Zieskes. Later, I’ll give you some of the sources such as census records, death records, and possible emigration record that may be helpful too in completing the picture. So here’s the family—

Children:

i Rose Wilhemina ZIESKE, b. 11 Aug 1934, Renville Co., MN.

ii Louis Joseph ZIESKE, b. 16 May 1938, Stearns Co., MN.

As you can see, there is not much very specific about the origins of Wilhelm. However, for Wilhelmina Burk, his wife, apparently she is known to have come from Pommern (no town mentioned).

53 There is one Family Tree on Ancestry.com that seems to think that the one emigration record I found that seems to fit is the right one—“DSBurtch” family tree. The emigration happened in 1853, as follows—

Wilhelm Zieske [Ziske] Arrival Date: 2 Dec 1853 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831 Age: 22

Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Destination: Ohio Place of Origin: Preusen Ship Name: Universe

Port of Arrival: New York Line: 9 Microfilm Serial: M237 Microfilm Roll: M237_134 List Number: 1221

So he is about the right age. The one odd thing is the destination of Ohio, but often German emigrants headed for Ohio and then continued on from there to points west. Apparently, William went on to Illinois for a while too, for he served in the Civil War with the 12 th Illinois Cavalry, Companies F and B, for a length time of service (4 years, 5 mo., 21 days) from 7 Oct 1861 to 28 March 1866. He applied for Pension and is listed in the list for Ida Township, Douglas Co., MN. He had the rank of private, despite his lengthy service, and his disability was said to be “Sun Stroke”. His alias name was William Claka.

I don’t find him in the 1860 census, but maybe he is in Illinois that year. I didn’t check for him yet. He no sooner gets out of the service, and he winds up in McLeod County, MN, where he gets married the next year (17 Feb 1867). His family and he are found after that on the census records, as follows—

I noticed under Herman’s descendants that some of them wind up in Heil, N.Dakota, and some of the other families go in various places in North Dakota. Howard Zieske and his wife Rose (nee Wiewel) even though they were in Orr, MN, in 1977 wind up dying in Douglas County. They had one child in Renville County too, which maybe gets closer to your family.

These are probably the key names and connections. Hopefully, you can link up somehow with these, although I don’t see the names there. When one checks Ancestry.com there seems to be a lot of people working on this family.

Anyway, all the best, and I hope you can find out something further about Wilhelm and his origins.

Ken Neumann

56 Fasbender & Neumann Wilhelm Zieske: One & the Same Family? 12 Jan 2008 with updates

Is Wilhelm Zieske born about 1831 of Douglas County, Minnesota the brother of Johann Zieski born 1820 whose parents are Michael Zieski & Anna Maria Krenz born about 1795, Putzig? If he is not a brother, maybe he is a relative? [13 Jan 2009: Wilhelm Zieske & Johann Zieski are very likely 1st cousins and their fathers, brothers, if they are not brothers, also a strong possibility.]

Note: NEW = newly added or modified report information, not necessarily newly found information.

John Zieske born 1864 in Wisconsin, son of Johann Zieski, moved to Minnesota and married a Minnesota born girl, Hattie Baker. Hattie’s family was based in Penn Twp, McLeod County.

John Zieske could have come to the Wilhelm Zieske family in Hutchinson Twp, McLeod County, MN. This is the Zieske who is an ancestor of Ken Neumann and that Zieske branch. Follow the chronology below and draw your own conclusions. The southern Minnesota Zieske group appears not to have had contact with the John Zieske & Wilhelm Zieske families although they lived reasonably close by.

The Josiah Baker family and the Wilhelm Zieske family lived within two townships of each other in McLeod County. Townships are normally 6 miles by 6 miles. It was a minimum of 12 miles and a maximum of 24 miles between their farms. The Josiah Baker family stays in Penn Twp, McLeod County, MN.

The Wilhelm Zieske Family moves from Hutchinson Twp, McLeod County, northwest to Ida Twp, Douglas County sometime after their last child was born in McLeod County in 1876 and before their next child in January 1880. They gathered land in Douglas County, ultimately 400 acres by 1886. They may have lived at yet another unknown location before Ida Township, Douglas County.

Between 1875 and 1880, Harriet Baker moves in with her sister and husband in Sumter Twp. At that point, there is only Hassan Valley Township between her and the Wilhelm Zieske family in Hutchinson twp: minimum of six miles, maximum of 18 miles.

In 1884, we see the marriage of John Zieske and Harriet Baker in Todd County, 90 miles north of the Baker home in Penn Twp, McLeod County; 45 miles east of Alexandria and Douglas County and the Wilhelm Zieske home. Harriet’s sister, Catherine and husband, William N. Arnold are Sponsors. In the 1885 Minnesota Census, the William N. Arnold family resides in Eagle Valley Township, Todd County, MN, the general site of the 1884 marriage.

A map is attached to summarize Family migration in Minnesota.

He has real estate and personal property value. 160 acres: 8 acres improved, 152 unimproved. There are no Burk or Baker families in Hutchinson Twp at this time. [13 Jan 2009: Census age is not always dependable. Wilhelm is known to have died in 1891 at age 59.]

1870: Fasbender: Harriet Baker, wife of John Zieske born 1864 is with her parents in Penn Township, McLeod County, MN in 1870.

1875: Fasbender: Harriet Baker, age 15, wife of John Zieske born 1864 is with her father, Josiah Baker, and brother, Jay age 2 in Penn Township, McLeod County, in MN 1875 Census. Her mother is absent, and is likely deceased.

1875: Fasbender: Harriet Baker’s sister, Catherine is likely married and living next door to her parents. The census count is next entry down on census from Josiah Baker.

1875: Neumann: 1 May 1875 Census. William Ziesky 40, wife, Minnie 31 are in Hutchinson Twp, McLeod County. Children are: Albert 7; Emma 5; Freddy 3; Herman 0. Also with them is Friederika Soek (Burk?) 68. At the same time, a Thomas Baker family is also in Hutchinson Twp.

1880: Neumann: 12 June census. Wilhelm Zieske and wife, Wilhelminia and children are in Ida Twp, Douglas County, Minnesota. They left McLeod County earlier. First child born in Douglas County, Ida Twp is 31 January 1880, Rosalina per Neumann records.

1880: Fasbender: Lucia H (Hattie). Baker, census date 28-29 June, is living with her sister and brother-in-law in Sumter Twp, Village of Lake Addie, McLeod County, MN. She is age 20 and is a domestic servant. Her sister is Catherine and brother- in-law is William Arnold, carpenter. Lake Addie (lake) is right outside current day Brownton, MN. Lake Addie Village was apparently a twin Village with Brownton, MN. Sumter Twp is on the north of Penn Twp.

1880: Fasbender: Josiah Baker, father of Hattie Baker is in Penn Twp, McLeod County, MN. Hattie Baker is not here.

1882: Fasbender: Valerie Pena picture said to be of John Zieske age 18. Backside, the photographer, N. Hassan, from Glencoe, Minnesota. Glencoe village is in Glencoe Twp, McLeod County, MN. Just northwest of Glencoe by 3 miles is Hassan Valley Township. Hutchinson Twp borders Hassan Valley Twp on the north. Whatever the age, this picture places John Zieske in the area of both the Josiah Baker and Wilhelm Zieske families at some time prior to his marriage to Hattie Baker. [13 Jan 2009: This is a key piece of evidence that could connect Wilhelm Zieske of McLeod and Douglas

59 counties, Minnesota and John Zieske born 1864, as either uncle/nephew or 1st cousins, once removed (where John’s father and Wilhelm are 1st cousins).

1884: Fasbender: John Zieski born 1864, having migrated to Minnesota earlier, married Lucia Harriet "Hattie" Baker at Clarissa, Eagle Valley Township, Todd County on 10 July 1884 at age 22 per Fasbender record. Her sister, Catherine and husband, William N. Arnold are the Sponsors.

1885: Fasbender: Josiah Baker, father of Hattie Baker is in Penn Twp, McLeod County, MN in 1885 with son, Jay. Hattie Baker is not here. Josiah Baker has new wife, Jane S. and apparent stepdaughter, Daisy.

1885: Fasbender: on May 23, 1885, John Zieske age 22 born in Wisconsin, is with the Maria Baker Family in Penn Twp, McLeod County, without his wife, Hattie Baker. Maria Baker has no husband listed and she is listed first. Her youngest child is age 7. This record (Household 76) is close to John’s father-in-law and family (Household 88) in the census and on adjoining census pages. We now have evidence of John Zieske born 1864 being in this area in about 1882 (the picture by N. Hassan) and in 1885.

1885 Fasbender: Where is Hattie Baker? The wife of John Zieske is not with her husband. At the May 1885 Minnesota census she would be about 4 months into her pregnancy with Ruby Isabel. Hattie could be in someone’s care and not necessarily in McLeod County or Minnesota. She could also be in Wisconsin with John Zieske’s parents. Or, back east with other Baker family. They were married 10 July 1884.

1885: Fasbender: on 30 May 1885, William N. Arnold & wife, Catherine are in Eagle Valley Twp, Todd cty, MN. Children: Hattie b. abt 1876; Jeanette b. abt 1878; Leonard b. abt 1880; and Mable b. abt 1883. Catherine Arnold is Hattie Baker’s sister.

1885: Fasbender: on 17 Oct 1885, Ruby Isabel Zieske is born to John Zieske & Hattie Baker.

1885: Neumann: In May, Wilhelm Zieske 53 (born about 1832) & wife, Wilhelmenia 42, both born in Germany, are in Douglas County, Ida Twp near Alexandria, MN with children: Albert 17; Emma 15; Freat/Fritz? 13; Herman 11; Minnie 9; Rosalin 5; Louisa 2. Also with them is a John Rolling age 34 born in Germany.

1886 Wilhelm Zieske & Wilhelmenia have land in their names: Ida Township, Douglas County, MN. Ida Township Section 30 NE1/4 (160 acres owned by Wilhelm Zieske); Section 20 (160 acres carved out of the middle, Wilhelmina Zieske, owner); and Section 20 (S1/2 of SE1/4, 80 acres,Wilhelm Zieske, owner).

60 1891: Neumann: Wilhelm Zieske dies at age 59, on 18 February 1891 while resident of Douglas County, Ida Twp. This Wilhelm Zieske served in the 12th Illinois Cavalry in the Civil War.

1895: Fasbender: John Zieske born 1864 & wife, Hattie Baker are residenced in Hubbard Twp, Hubbard County, MN. This county and township is north of Ida twp., Douglas county by about 50 miles.

1900: Fasbender: John Zieske born 1864 & wife, Hattie Baker are residenced in Hubbard Twp, Hubbard County, MN

1910: Fasbender: In 1910, John Zieske born 1864 & wife, Hattie Baker and children are in Wheatland twp, Cass cty, ND.

1920: Fasbender: John Zieske born 1864 & wife, Hattie are in Fossum Twp, Norman County, MN

1930: Fasbender: John Zieske born 1864 & wife, Hattie are in Fossum Twp, Norman County, MN

1935: Fasbender: John Zieske born 1864 died 28 Oct 1935 while residence of Faith, Fossum Twp, Norman County, MN.

1954: Fasbender: Hattie (Baker) Zieske died on 9 March 1954 in Spokane, Spokane County, Washington.

61 This is a map of Minnesota taken from a Minnesota township map book. The very large numbers are page numbers in the book. They can be used for reference for our purpose. The southern MN Zieske group is at South 31(Green); Bakers at NE 31 (Blue); Wilhelm Zieske started at SE 39 (Red) and moved to NE 44; John Zieske born 1864 married Hattie Baker (Blue) at SE 53 (Blue/Black) and they moved to SE 61 and then SE 69 where he died. They were in Wheatland Twp, Cass County, North Dakota just west of Fargo, ND in 1910, then back to SE 69.

62 Is there a Pulsfuss connection between our Zieske/Zieski? 19 Dec 2007

Note: Special endings “en” and “in” were removed from this discussion and records on 23 April 2008. These suffixes should be omitted when one is expressing the German record contents in English. I also replaced the capital “S” from names and replaced it with a lower case “s”. What appears to be a capitalized “S” in the German records is just another ”s”, For my own notes, I tried to express what I observed ( a large or capitalized “S”). This is unnecessary.

Per Email:Valerie Pena to Fred Matson, 19 Dec 2007

“Is this Johann Liske(Zieske) of the Fasbender Zieski group part of Otto Bloedow’s Zieske line? Somehow these families must be connected. My Johann of 20 Dec 1820 was married to two Brietkreutz women whose mother was an Anna Rosina Pulseuss (Pulsfuss a different spelling but the same?) But who was this Johann father of Gottfried? Do we know who his (Johann’s) father was? Not mine because he was only 5 yrs younger than Gottfried. But could they be cousins? I have the feeling that the key to our connections must be in an earlier film record before the 1800's and likely in the same church.” END.

Valerie raises a good point. And I have some observations to add. Look at the two pictures (next page) from these Putzighauland records. The first picture is the left side of the full record, the second is the right side.

63 64 Record 1. On the left side (top picture), note the record that is 6th from the bottom (line #17) of this picture and where Johann Liske & Anna Elizabeth Pulsfuss are parents of Gottfried born 5 May 1825. The right side of this record is the lower picture where near middle top you see the names (witness/godparents) Martin Hinz and Martin Beutler & Ana Justina Hanelt nee Beutler.

Record 2. Two lines (records) lower on both pictures we have at what appears to be line #2, Michael Breitkreutz & Ana Rosina Pulsfuss, parents of Michael born 17 July 1825. On the right side of this record (lower picture), we see Sponsors Michael Beer, Christoph Schulz & Beata Boehlke.

As Valerie says, her Johann born 1820 (whom we tracked from Wisconsin to Minnesota) married two Breitkreutz women whose mother was likely this Ana Rosina in record 2. Valerie says that the boy born in Record 1 is not likely of her family.

Therefore, if Anna Elizabeth in Record 1 and Ana Rosina in Record 2 are sisters, then we have a potential Zieske family link provided we can figure out where Record 1 fits in Otto’s Zieske family. The Pulsfuss surname is the key. And, of course, is Liske just another spelling or handwriting for Zieske, Ziske or such.

There are two more names in these records that I keep seeing in Ziske related records: Beutler and Schulz. Beutler, I have seen as sponsors in other records of Otto’s Bloedow Zieske family; Schulz is, of course, relevent to Otto’s Zieske family (wife of Michael Zieske born 1816) and now here also a Schulz witness with Valerie’s Zieski family (Record 2).

We have to be careful about jumping to conclusions on surnames. But each surname witness is worth pursuing. This Putzig-Putzighauland area is not densely populated. It is entirely possible that everyone is related to everyone by blood or through marriage.

Schulz: By age and year, this Christoph Schulz that sponsors the Breitkreutz/Pulsfuss birth in Record 2 above, could easily be a brother or even father of Andreas Schulz, who is the father of Anna Christina Schulz who is wife of Michael Zieske born 1816 of Otto’s Bloedow Zieske family. Bear in mind that Andreas Schulz is from Putzig and Christoph Schulz appears to be from Putzighauland. So, either way we have Schulz in each parish.

Beutter: This Beutler surname is curious and has been for some time. It appears often with Otto’s Bloedow Zieske family at Anna Christina Schulz’s birth in 1821 (Putzig) and then births of her children with Michael Zieske born 1816, those children born in 1842 and 1845, both Putzig.

If Lieske, Zieske or such in Volume 1: Putzighauland could be family, then, from the records in this report, here are some combination of names to consider that appear frequently in Putzighauland. The birth year is in parens if available.

65 Peter Lieskie, father & mother, Louise Torno of Child: Johann Friedrich (1835); Wilhelmine (1837); Henriette 1841; Beata Luise (1844); Wilhelmine Ernestine (1846); Auguste (1848); Wilhelm (1850; Pauline (1852);

Peter Sieske, father & mother, Anna Catherina Buetler: Sponsors of a child (1833)

Ludwig Lieske, father & Anna Louise Schulz, mother of Child: Ludwig (1838); Anna Rosina (1842); Wilhelmine 1845);

Christian Schulz, father & Juliane Lieske, mother of Child: Augusta Wilhelmine (1845);

Gottlieb Lieske, father & Wilhelmine Beutler, mother of Child: August Wilhelm (1849); Augusta Wilhelmine (1851);

Wilhelm Sonnenburg, father & Hennriette of Westphal, mother of Child: Gustav Adolph (1850). This surname is that of Dianne Matson’s great grandmother, wife of Michael Zieske born 1847.

Valerie raises a good point that the answer may be in an earlier generation. Reviewing earlier microfilm is in my plans after I get a better grip of this film.

66 Review and Observations 18 December 2007 With updates

We are searching the correct communities. We have the correct microfilm 0741850. But we may need other microfilm to supplement our research later. [13 Jan 2009: the key supplement microfilm is the series 0808104-125].

Putzig and Putzighauland are 4 km apart. These are separate parishes. Putzighauland is closer to the City of Czarnikau and so far as I can determine, in earlier days, Putzig was of Pommerania Province and Putzighauland of Posen Province. [13 Jan 2009: this is speculation]. Each was of the Czarnikau kreis, however. The county must have been split for whatever reason, probably war. If accurate, then this helps explain where one spouse in family was born in Pommern and the other in Posen. They were next door to each other.

If we assume minimal migration, Valerie Pena’s Zieski family is based in Putzig. At the same time, it appears that Johann, son of Michael Zieski [13 Jan 2009: born 1781] & Anna Maria Krenz born about 1795, married into the Breitkreutz family which appears to be based in Putzighauland. Johann married (his second marriage) their daughter Anna Rosina first, she died, and then he married Anna’s sister, Beata Luise. This Johann Zieski is the father of the man (John Zieske born 1864 in Wisconsin) I tracked from Wisconsin to northern Minnesota and ultimately connected with Valerie. [as of 11 July 2008, we also know that Johann Zieski’s first marriage [In Stieglitz on 12 Feb 1847] was to Louise Steinke of Stieglitz.]

Otto’s Zieske family appears to have a base of Ascherbude, northwest of Putzig. Johann Zieske, father of the groom is of that community at the time of his son’s marriage. But the marriage of Michael Zieske born 1816 & Anna Christina Schulz took place in Putzig in 1842. Anna’s father, Andreas Schulz, deceased at the time of the wedding, is of Putzig where we appear to have found his death record. That places Anna Christina in Putzig. It is in Putzig where Michael Zieske born 1816 & Anna Christina Schulz begin their lives together and have their Prussian born children before coming to America, Wisconsin, first, then southern Minnesota.

So, we have the two key Zieske (or such) families based in Putzig and with at least one with some tie also to Putzighauland. Yet we have no apparent clues to link our Zieske families in any way. [as of 11 July 2008, we have linked Michael Zieske born 1816 and Michael Zieske born 1846/47 as uncle/nephew.] We also have no clue of the birth of Michael Zieske in 1847. [as of 11 July 2008, Michael Zieske’s birth is found and verified to be in Ascherbude in 1846, not 1847]

I have yet to view Volume 3 of this film. It begins in 1855. [Vol 3 is Putzighauland for 1855-65. It has been reviewed, initially]

End.

67 Analysis of 7 December 2007 Microfilm Review and observations to date:

RE: Putzig record, 1843 Bapt 9 July, Child Juliane: Father: Gottfried Ziske & Mother- Ana Rosina PoSehn. This could be Gottfried Zieski born about 1817 of Valerie Pena’s Fasbender family. This record is between January 1843 and December 1844. The age makes sense. But this is not the only Gottfried or Gottlief Ziske or Zieske or such I have seen. So, have to be careful. All could be related however.

I have to review my earlier findings. Events I thought taking place in Gruenfier may have been in Putzig. Or, maybe Gruenfier was a part of Putzig at the time. Very close by but appear to be different parishes at the time. The records appear to run into each other.

The first child, Anna Susanna, of Michael Zieske born 1816 & Anna C. Schultz may have been of a different marriage, before marriage, or, just of a different father. I have to revisit the microfilm for this period again. However, Posen Listers advise that the marriage record states that she was Jungfrau at time of marriage. As such they advise she would have had no children before and maybe no relationships. So, it remains, where does Anna Susanna Zieske fit in as we believe she was born 14 January 1841? [verified later that Anna Susanna Zieske was born in 1847, not 1841]

In reviewing deaths, Ziske is not as common as births. Ziske don’t die, I guess. I found only one Ziske (Michael Ziske died 6 Oct 1831 at age 50), or, any spelling of Ziske in the death records for about a 15 year period. Ziske could be a new name to the Putzig area. We know that Johann Zieske, father of Otto’s Michael Zieske born 1816 (husband of Anna Christine Schulz) was from Ascherbude (today, Biernatowo) at time of marriage of son, Michael Zieske & Anna Christine Schulz. Very close to Putzig. But we also know of Valerie Pena’s Fasbender Michael Ziseki and wife, Anna Maria Krenz believe born about 1795 in Putzig. This Michael Ziske who died in 1831, born about 1781 is very likely a relative of one of our Zieske families. [as of 11 July 2008, I believe this death is for Michael Zieski, husband of Anna Maria Krenz]

Still no shared Sponsors or other data found that would clearly indicate a possible relationship between Valerie Pena’s Fasbender & Otto Bloedow’s Zieske families and no data found to connect with the southern Minnesota Michael Zieske born 1847 to anyone, parents or siblings or other. Clearly, both Valerie’s and Otto’s Zieske ancestors are in the same parish, Putzig. [as of 11 July 2008, Michael Zieske born 1846 (not 1847) and Michael Zieske born 1816 are verified to be nephew and uncle.]

Communities then and now: To search areas involved in our search we must know how names changed.. Then German named Ascherbude is now Biernatowo; Putzig is Jedrzejewo; Grünfier is Zielonowo. This from Posen-L volunteer genealogists. A very good WEB site resource to determine this is: http://www.kartenmeister.com/preview/databaseUwe.asp These communities are close by to each other.

68 I didn’t locate as much information this time on 7 December 2007 as last time, 30 November 2007. But finding the marriage record for Michael Zieske born 1816 & Anna Christine Schulz and with that, father’s names and place of residence has special value.

First, it tells us that we now can with confidence place in Putzig at some time: Valerie Pena’s (Fasbender Zieski group) Michael Zieski & Anna Maria Krenz each born about 1795 and Otto Bloedow’s (Bloedow) Michael Zieske born about 1816 & Anna Christine Schulz. The children of these couples are about a generation apart.

Second, these community areas we are researching are not densely populated. Everyone probably knew everyone. I keep being reminded of how my Norwegian ancestors came to my home town in groups from the same immediate area. If one family from Putzig came to America and to a place then it is likely that more than one and perhaps many came first to the same place.

I have come across other Ziske or such names recently that require more follow-up. You see them in the microfilm page listings above. Any or none of these could be family. I am tracking them even just by name so that they are easier to get back to for later reviews.

I have reserved this FHC Microfilm 0741850 long term at the Oakdale History Center. I am thinking I will need it for a year and more. There is much more to be learned from this film including re-review of the earliest records on this film which are handwritten paragraphs, not columns. And there are gaps in data that I hope other films can cover.

69 Discussion 30 November 2007 Original date

[Updated to be accurate as of 10 March 2009]

For purpose of this discussion we have three Michael Zieske: Michael 1795 (Valerie's); Michael 1816 (Otto's); and Michael 1826 (Valerie's). Michael born 1847(26 Sep 1846) (my wife's greatgrandfather and nephew of Michael Zieske born 1816) has not yet surfaced.

(Verified as of 11 July 2008) The families of Michael Zieski born 1795 & Anna Maria Krenz AND Michael Zieske born 1816 & Anna c. Schultz lived and had children at one time in the same village: Putzig. All known Prussian born children are found in protestant church records of Putzig.

Earlier, I found the birth of Michael Ziske born 1826 in this parish and thus also the presence of his parents.

I have not located the marriage of Michael Zieske & Anna Maria Krenz. I have the Putzig marriage of Michael Zieske born 1816 & Anna C. Schultz (15 Apr 1842).

After finding the birth of Johann Christoph, I also found the birth of a second child, Gottfried, born 1845 (appears to be Jan 9, or, Jan 9 could be baptism or both). His parents are Michael Ziske & Anna Christina Schulz. This Michael Zieske is born in 1816.

A Luise Beutter (verified to be Beutler) was a witness to Johann Christoph’s baptism and a Gottlieb Beutter (verified to be Beutler) a witness to Gottfried's baptism. This gives some support to these Beutter (Beutler) being of the same family, maybe even husband/wife.

Valerie, this Anna Christina Schulz I found today married to a Michael Ziske may be the same Ana Christina Schutz your uncle found to be married to Michael Zieski born 1826, son of Michael Zieski and Anna Maria Krenz. More likely, however, because of age, Michael Zieski born 1826 was marrried to a different Anna Christina Schutz.

It is possible that this girl is the Anna Christina Schulz I am tracking that was born at nearly the same time as Michael Zieski born 1826. I can't be sure yet because I have not yet seen Michael Zieske born 1826 and a wife having children.

Anna Christina is a common name in these records. But this Anna Christina Schulz born Dec 1829 (father=Johann Schulz; mother=Anna Christina Zellmer) is a candidate for the wife of Michael Zieski born 1826 if he married an Anna Christina Schulz.
