LANCASTER COUNTY CONSERVANCY POSITION DESCRIPTION

Stewardship Crew Leader Part-Time

PROGRAM STRATEGY: IMPLEMENTATION OF STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM  To implement management plans that assure purposeful use and protection of the preserves and conservation areas  To promote and support environmental awareness and stewardship  To develop and disseminate accurate and credible information  To inform and educate the public on our mission, goals and programs  To provide opportunities for recreation and study of natural science  To engage volunteers  To increase the visibility of LCC

OVERVIEW OF POSITION  Organizational role 1. Part time operations position 2. Supervised by: Director of Stewardship 3. Accountabilities o 80% Stewardship o 20% Education & Outreach  Comprehensive Roles 1. To insure that all LCC properties are actively managed to meet the program strategies above.

To represent the Conservancy, available to monitor LCC nature preserves on weekends on a rotating schedule with other crew members, and interact with preserve visitors to provide information about the preserves and other opportunities at surrounding natural areas open to the public. 3. To assist with implementation of management plans for all properties owned by LCC.

 Skills and qualities for the position 1. Knowledge of land management techniques such as the identification of invasive species, herbicide applications, landscape restoration, habitat management, access planning, orienteering, boundary identification and marking. 2. Understanding of natural systems/ecology and the ability to transfer this information to the public. 3. Ability to communicate clearly and develop relationships with the public and crew members. 4. Knowledge of writing management plans, easement documentation and other reporting requirements 5. Ability to supervise Stewardship Crew, interns, and volunteers to meet specific responsibilities and tasks associated with land stewardship 6. Ability to operate equipment associated with stewardship including chainsaw, mowers, trucks, hand tools, etc.

 Duties and responsibilities 1. Operational tasks Fee-Simple Stewardship  Assist with administration of Stewardship operations  Planning, creating, and maintaining trails and other access improvements on LCC properties  Forest and land Stewardship and other maintenance activities  Trash removal and other clean up activities  Investigate violations of Conservancy Preserve use policy and recommend action or respond  Install signs and other property improvements  GPS mapping and boundary identification marking  Maintain and use LCC tools & equipment and oversee use by others

Administrative  Help organize stewardship events, steward training, and other activities

Land Protection  Assist Land Protection staff with identification of natural resources on project properties – site visits

2 | P a g e Lancaster County Conservancy 1/27/15 Position Description Stewardship Outreach  Assist with internal coordination and support of interns and volunteers  Assist with the education and outreach program, where appropriate  Build and maintain relationships with landowners and stewards  Plan and participate in events and outings

IV. MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE

1. Complete management tasks on preserves according to work plan 2. Provide timely support for the Stewardship Department and Committee 3. Support monitoring of all Preserves for safety and accessibility 4. Maintain Conservancy equipment and vehicles 5. Provide information in a timely and professional manner, both verbally and written, for internal use and in response to external requests. 6. Exhibit a positive, cooperative, and friendly attitude 7. Work well with others, helpful, and cooperative
