Instructions: Read the red book pages and answer the following questions (pages 86-88)

Weathering by itself produces no ______landforms

However, the force of gravity slowly moves ______down a ______.

This movement varies in its nature from the huge ______and rock _____ to the imperceptible ______of soil down a hillside.

The general term for this process is Mass ______or Mass Movement.

Assignment 1: Red Book (pages 86-88) 1. What types of mass movements are shown in Fig 7:1?

2. What type of mass movement is shown in Fig 7:2?

3. When did the Frank Slide happen, how big was it, and what damage did it do?

4. Finish this diagram: Geography 10 Mass Wastage (Mass Movement) Ms. Ripley Name:______

Section 2: Soil Creep Read the information and match the numbers in the diagram with these missing words:

Vertically Pushed Drying Down Moisture Geography 10 Mass Wastage (Mass Movement) Ms. Ripley Name:______

The slowest movement is soil creep, at a rate of less than 1 cm a year. Although slow, creeps very important as the movement is almost continuous and acts on all weathered slopes. Individual particles are pushed to the surface by wetting, heating or freezing of soil moisture. They move at right angles to the surface. (Figure 1.6). The particles fall vertically, under the influence of gravity, as they dry out or cool or as soil moisture thaws. The result of millions of such movements over time is a net movement downslope. As the processes of creep involve a lifting of the surface, the term heave is sometimes used to describe soil creep.

Section 3: Soil Creep This diagram shows a slope before mass movement. Draw and explain with labels what it would look like in the future if soil creep had occurred. Geography 10 Mass Wastage (Mass Movement) Ms. Ripley Name:______
