AGILITY HANDLER’S OATH I have read and pledge the following: I will make sure that my dog thinks doing agility is lots of fun! My dog and I learn at our own rate. I will not forge ahead before we are ready or compare our progress to that of our classmates. I will respect my dog’s needs, desires, and comfort level. I will not take short cuts in our training or lose my patience when our progress isn’t as fast as I would like it to be. I understand that class is a time to bond with my dog, give my attention to my dog and instructor, and not a time to let my dog visit with other dogs. If I don’t understand or am uncomfortable with an exercise, I will ask my instructor for help. If I must miss class, I will do my best to attend another class or schedule a private makeup class so that my dog does not miss that week’s instruction. I understand that I am half of the agility team. My mental and physical state has a lot to do with my dog’s performance. My dog looks forward to spending time with me. No matter what kind of day I’m having, I will set it aside for this hour of class. I will give my dog the appropriate time to warm up and relieve himself before class. I will always clean up after my dog. I will make sure to bring an assortment of snacks for my dog each week along with a favorite toy so that he gets a variety of rewards. If my dog’s performance does not meet my expectations, I will smile, give him a hug or treat, and make a note to myself to practice that skill more. My dog will never see disappointment from me. At the end of an exercise, I will always tend to my dog before I promise moving on or looking for feedback from the instructor. While I am taking my dog to class and to other public places, I will not risk spreading illness. If my dog is sick, I will leave him at home.
