1. Executive Director’s Reflection * So we begin 2015! The 50th anniversary of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains! Happy Anniversary, all of you!!!

I had to smile a bit as I began to look forward to this year, and reflected on yesterday’s feast of the three magi! It did not go unnoticed the line from Matthew, “Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11). The word “gift” jumped out as that is one of the central words of our 50th anniversary theme: Honor the Gift! (Read more>>)

2. Happy Golden Jubilee to the NACC! * In April 1965, the United States Catholic Bishops founded the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC). Fifty years later the NACC “continues the healing ministry of Jesus in the name of the Church.” We are deeply grateful for this gift of service. This 50th Jubilee theme states it well –Honor the Gift! We will have many ways to remind us of and honor this Gift. In each NACC Now, we will have reminders of our early years, as already captured well in the 40th Anniversary booklet, Wellsprings of Our Journey: 40th Anniversary Reflections. We will also include in each NACC Now a reflection on his or her ministry by one of our members. We continue to encourage our members to write about their ministry also. The 2015 National Conference will have many ways we will mark this year, and recognize our leaders who have brought us to this moment in our history. Stay tuned!

3. Welcome to new NACC Board of Directors starting January 1, 2015 * The NACC Board of Directors welcomes four new board members who begin their first terms as of January 1, 2015. Jim Letourneau and Mary Heintzkill were elected by the NACC membership in 2014, and begin their first three-year term. Brian Yanofchick and Sr. Margo Tafoya, MSSp, were both appointed by the NACC Board of Directors and also begin their first three-year term. We welcome the wisdom, experience, and expertise they bring to the NACC leadership.

4. NACC staff member, Lindsey Tews, will be leaving NACC end of January * At the end of January 2015, Lindsey Tews, who has been our Administrative Specialist Certification for the past three plus years, will be leaving the NACC staff. Our NACC members and the Certification Commission who have worked closely with Lindsey have deeply appreciated her responsiveness, excellent service, organization, and overall attentiveness to and care for our members. She will be greatly missed. As Lindsey and her husband Mike are expecting their first born in early 2015, Lindsey has decided to remain home as a mom to her newborn. We pray for Lindsey and Mike as they await their child, and express our deepest gratitude to Lindsey for her service of to our members.

5. Welcome to our new NACC staff member, Ramona Zeb * Today, Ramona Zeb will be joining the NACC staff as the newly hired Administrative Specialist Certification. Ramona will shadow Lindsey Tews in these next four weeks as she learns these responsibilities from Lindsey and prepares to take over the administration of the certification processes. We welcome Ramona, who being brings a valuable background in administrative support roles, as well as a strong customer service and care disposition. Welcome, Ramona!

6. Death of our NACC member, Sr. Norma Gutierrez, BCC * Our dear NACC member, Sr. Norma Gutierrez, BCC, died on December 23, 2014. She very recently served the NACC as a member of the NACC Board of Directors (2005- 2010). So many members experienced her welcoming presence at our national conferences. Not many weeks ago she had learned of the return of her cancer after 18 years in remission. We will miss her deeply. May God’s fullness of peace abide with her. www.mysanantonio.com/news/religion/article/Sister-Gutierrez-eased-the-transition-from- life-5981716.php

7. January–February 2015 Vision will be available soon! * Watch later this week for the January-February 2015 Vision issue that will be dedicated to articles on the newly revised NACC standards and procedures for certification that were approved for 2015-2021 by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Subcommittee on Certification for Ecclesial Ministry and Service. Go here to view this certificate of approval. This Vision issue will provide articles on the background of this process of approval, and the newly revised standards.

8. Upcoming NACC Initial Certification Application Deadline From January 1-February 17, the NACC will accept applications for the February 2015 initial certification application deadline. 9. 10. NACC Palliative Care and Hospice Specialty Certification offering is available In the fall of 2013 the NACC Board of Directors approved certification standards and procedures for a new specialty certification in Palliative Care and Hospice. In the first months of 2014 the NACC Certification Commission implemented a pilot certification project of this specialty certification with a select number of members. After the pilot project, revisions were made to the procedures and materials required. In November the Certification Commission approved these revisions and you can now access these standards and materials at www.nacc.org/certification/standards-and-procedures.aspx. Any members desiring to apply for this specialty certification can send their materials by February 16, 2015. Also, the NACC will be offering early in 2015 a webinar on this specialty certification to help answer questions about the materials required and the process. For other questions, please contact David Lichter ([email protected]).

2015 50th ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE

11. Registration today for the NACC 2015 50th Anniversary Conference on the NEW Online Registration Portal! * The NACC has launched a NEW online registration portal for conference registrants. This new feature provides all interested participants the opportunity to register and/or pay for the conference online. For those who would still like to register through the mail, a paper registration form was sent recently with the NACC conference flyer that can be returned directly to the NACC office with payment. The NACC national office is very excited to launch this new online feature and hope our conference participants will enjoy this easy way to register for the upcoming conference. If you have questions, please contact Jeanine Annunziato ([email protected]) at our NACC office.

12. Would you consider or ask for a Conference Sponsorship? * As our 2015 50th Anniversary Conference draws near, we have many conference sponsorship opportunities. Would you consider being a sponsor? Would you consider asking your employer or a vendor to consider being an NACC Sponsor? We have one sponsorship opportunity ($500) that congratulates and recognizes the 50th Anniversary of NACC. Please consider inviting others to be sponsors. We will need these sponsorships by Friday, February 6th, to get them into our conference materials. 14. Please keep sending the names of our deceased NACC members to honor! The theme for our 2015 national conference is “Honoring the Gift.” While we are celebrating our 50th anniversary as the NACC, it seems appropriate to think about all those who have been a gift to our ministry, especially our colleagues who have called us, nurtured us, and guided us, and now are home in the Kingdom of Heaven. At our upcoming conference, we would like to honor the memory of all of our NACC member colleagues who are deceased. We ask that you submit names of member colleagues and friends who you have ministered with, or who have been a part of your journey and have been a gift to your ministry. Please submit their names to Jeanine Annunziato at the NACC office at [email protected]. We want to recognize all of these people at one of our liturgies and we need your help to make sure we do not miss anyone. Even if you think someone else may have sent in a name, please do not hesitate to include it on your list. Gratefully, Rich Bartoszek, Conference Liturgy Chair
