[821-2] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF 12 TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF UNITED 13 STATES HIGHWAY 17 BUSINESS FROM ITS 14 INTERSECTION WITH OCEAN HIGHWAY IN 15 GEORGETOWN COUNTY TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH 16 THE GEORGETOWN/HORRY COUNTY LINE “MICKEY 17 SPILLANE WATERFRONT 17 HIGHWAY” AND ERECT 18 APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS 19 PORTION OF HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS 20 “MICKEY SPILLANE WATERFRONT 17 HIGHWAY”. 21 22 Whereas, Frank Morrison “Mickey” Spillane was born in 23 Brooklyn, New York, on March 9, 1918; and 24 25 Whereas, Mickey Spillane is an accomplished writer creating 26 dozens of novels and his work is acclaimed to be amongst the 27 alltime selling books, published in America; and 28 29 Whereas, Mickey Spillane launched his writing career in the mid 30 1930’s, and his novels became a quick sensation, with many 31 selling millions of copies within the span of one week, and by the 32 estimates of many, Mickey Spillane is currently within the top five 33 most translated writers in the entire world; and 34 35 Whereas, Mickey Spillane’s work has expanded to include films, 36 television, and radio series based on his work; and 37 38 Whereas, Mickey Spillane is held in high esteem by his peers, and 39 in 1979 was bestowed the Junior Literary Guild Award, and was 40 honored with the title of Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of 41 America at the Edgar Allen Poe Awards; and 42

[821] 3 1 Whereas, Mickey Spillane has chosen Murrells Inlet, South 2 Carolina, as his home for many decades; and 3 4 Whereas, Mickey Spillane loves the beautiful lowcountry of South 5 Carolina, and has dedicated many years to fishing the creeks of 6 Murrells Inlet; and 7 8 Whereas, the residents of Murrells Inlet and Georgetown County 9 take pride in Mickey Spillane’s personal accomplishments and that 10 many of his highly successful mystery novels began when they 11 were authored here; and as a gifted writer, and successful lifelong 12 businessman, Mickey Spillane’s personal successes have brought 13 distinction to Murrells Inlet, and the South Carolina coast; and 14 15 Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to recognize the 16 tremendous accomplishment of this renowned writer and 17 Georgetown County icon by naming a portion of United States 18 Highway 17 in his honor. Now, therefore, 19 20 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 21 concurring: 22 23 That the members of the General Assembly request that the 24 Department of Transportation name the portion of United States 25 Highway 17 Business from its intersection with Ocean Highway in 26 Georgetown County to its intersection with the Georgetown/Horry 27 County line “Mickey Spillane Waterfront 17 Highway” and erect 28 appropriate signs or markers along this portion of highway that 29 contain the words “Mickey Spillane Waterfront 17 Highway”. 30 31 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 32 the Department of Transportation. 33 XX 34
