Flame Test Lab

Purpose: To observe the different colors that different elements give off when they are burned.

Materials:

Equipment Chemicals Bunsen burner Water large test tube Metallic compounds ring stand clamp beakers Wire and wire holder

Procedure: [Warning-be sure to wear goggles at all times] This lab requires the heating of a small piece of wire which is coated with a metallic compound. The wire will be extremely hot after being heated. Do not touch it. Be sure the flame of the bunsen burner is blue only, if necessary adjust it. Now heat up the wire all over until it glows orange, this is to clean it. Next dip the wire into the water, then into the metallic compound. This should cause the wire to become coated with a thin layer of the metallic compound. Now place the coated wire into the blue flame. Observe the color which is given of f due to the burning of the metal in the compound. [TAKE GOOD OBSERVATION NOTES] If no color appears or color emissions are not observed, try the procedure again. It may be necessary to place a small clump of the metallic compound on the wire to allow it to burn.

When finished the wire must be heated all over until the metallic compound has been burned totally away. A blue/colorless flame indicates the wire is clean. Now move on the next station and repeat the procedure for all stations.

[WARNING - Hot wire looks exactly like cold wire!] 2 Data:
