Title: Fellow (Wildlife)/ DFP16R7MIG02

Project Description: migratory birds, waterfowl, shorebirds, ornithology, population monitoring;

The Fellow will collect field data during two intensive field season studies focused on migratory waterfowl and shorebirds. They will serve as an observer in small boats, aircraft, or from land to record presence, abundance and distribution of migratory bird species; will identify and locate nests of waterfowl and shorebird species; will monitor hatching success and band adults and chicks belonging to 10 common shorebird species breeding in Barrow, AK; and will record, enter, summarize, and analyze scientific data addressing distribution, density, trend, and stage or incubation or molt in migratory birds. They will then assist in the preparation of reports that summarize and update existing status of numerous migratory bird species. The Fellow will be assigned at least one complete report for preparation. The management and conservation of migratory birds are core functions of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Alaska is a key breeding region for many species of migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, and seabirds.
