The purpose of this assignment is to create a clean install of the Windows OS and assess the state of your assigned hardware.

If you find any hardware deficiencies in your assigned system, you must notify the ENS systems staff and request repair. All requests for repair must be submitted electronically using the following web page: http://www.ens.utulsa.edu/tech/irm/ . Record any request ID numbers here:

The following must be completed for your assigned system:

1. Reset the system boot password using an appropriate strong password. University requires that a password have at least six characters, one upper case letter, one lower case letter, one digit, and one non-alphanumeric character. Limit the password to no more than 12 characters for this exercise.

2. Reset the startup menu password using the same system boot password.

3. Partition and reformat the disk so only half of the disk is used for the Windows OS installation.

4. Do not connect your computer to the Tulsa University network.

5. Install a clean version of the Windows XP service pack 2 or higher (or Windows Vista). Do not install earlier versions of Windows. The course instructor has two copies of Windows XP that can be temporarily checked-out by students. The installation key is given in the WebCT instructions. The course instructor will attempt to acquire additional copies. Copies of Windows XP SP-2 and Windows Vista can be purchased at the Twin Towers computer store for $10.

6. Set up a user account for yourself and for the course instructor. Create passwords for the both. The course instructor’s user id is: childrja Allow the course instructor to have administrative privilege.

Install and enable public domain (open source) security software using only external media (for the installation) for these categories: a. 8. Create a shortcut for each of the installed security software applications on the computer desk-top for easy identification and access.

9. Submit this form using WebCT by the due date. No computer in the lab should be connected to the TU network at any time. Any student attaching their computer system to a network will fail to meet expectations for this assignment.

10. Grading: Using all the suggested security-ware will meet expectations. You will need to find an alternative to the MS provided firewall software to exceed expectations. Also include a brief review of your software choices to explain why you liked the chosen product.
