Alcohol Abuse Policy

The ISU on the Mediterranean, Summer in Valencia Program views alcohol and drug abuse by students as a serious violation of the terms of participation. Incidents of abuse will be treated accordingly. This includes dismissal, if necessary.

With regard to alcohol abuse, Program Directors have identified three categories of abuse. These are outlined as follows: • Level 1: Consumption of alcohol which causes a student to miss class or be unable to participate fully in a classroom activity is considered alcohol abuse. At the first instance, a warning letter will be issued, and the student faces expulsion from the program. A repeated offense will result in expulsion from the program, an automatic drop from all courses, and loss of the program fee and other expenses related to the program.

• Level 2: Consumption of alcoholic beverages which results in loud, boisterous, or offensive behavior is more serious. Any infraction will result in a warning letter and notification of home school and parents. A repeated offense will result in expulsion from the program, an automatic drop from all courses, and loss of the program fee and other expenses related to the program.

• Level 3: Consumption of alcoholic beverages which result in any of the following is the most serious degree of alcohol abuse:

- Loss of consciousness or vomiting - Destruction of property or physically abusive behavior - Endangerment of self or of others - Incarceration - Admission to a hospital or emergency room - Treatment for alcohol poisoning

This level of alcohol abuse, at the discretion of the Program Directors may result in immediate expulsion from the program without the reimbursement of program fees, an automatic drop from all courses, and loss of the program fee and other expenses related to the program. In signing this document I acknowledge that I have read the entire document, have had an opportunity to ask questions, understand its terms, agree to the terms stated, am giving up legal rights I might otherwise have, and have signed it knowingly and voluntarily. I also acknowledge that offenses as noted above may constitute my dismissal from the program as decided by the program Directors.

1 SOCIAL HABITS IN SPAIN

Food and Drink Spaniards have a much more relaxed attitude about alcohol consumption, but not about alcohol abuse

 It is quite normal to have wine or beer with lunch or dinner, but they do not generally have more than a glass or two.

Do not mistake what appears to be a liberal attitude on drinking with an absence of drinking norms

 Be careful about drinking too quickly, most Spaniards drink very slowly in order to be able to endure the entire night

 Drunkenness is generally frowned upon and public intoxication is considered insulting for you and those around you

 People will hold you responsible for your behavior, so drink in moderation (especially in family situations) or you may find that you’re not invited a second time.

HOMESTAY PROGRAM POLICIES

Illegal Drug Use

 The use of any illegal drug is strictly prohibited on the program including in the home of your Spanish family

 Your put yourself and your family at risk by breaking the law

 This behavior will result in disciplinary action by the Program Director, which may include early dismissal from the program.
