Algonac High School 2010-2011 Points of Pride

As the 2010-2011 school year comes to a close, it is important to reflect on the many accomplishments of our students. Despite the reality of economic hardships, our students and staff continue to accomplish amazing things.

 After three years of preparation and hard work, our first International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Students completed their first academic year. Almost 100 students participated in at least one IB course. The number of participants is expected to double during the 2011- 2012 school year.  Through the generosity of local constituents, bond proceeds were used to upgrade AHS facilities over the past summer and throughout the year. New carpet, paint, lockers, furniture, gymnasium, weight room, track, computer labs, SMART boards, ELMO document cameras, wireless internet network, cafeteria upgrades, and student furniture were installed. We truly educate in a ‘first-class’ educational facility that our constituents can be proud of.  Algonac High School’s use of online education nearly tripled. A ‘Graduation Coach’ was put in place that enrolled every student in the school that is behind in credits in a virtual credit recovery program.  Through the generosity of the Community Foundation, a branch of the College Readiness Network was opened in Algonac High School. The center focused on assisting TIP eligible students with College Readiness and Application Processes.  AHS Senior Christopher Chockley was a National Merit Award Recipient. He received a full academic scholarship for his accomplishment to the University of Alabama (Grant package totaled over $110,000).  The Algonac High School Band (100 members strong) maintained their storied tradition by achieving Division I ratings in every MSBOA competition participated in during the 2010- 2011 school year.  The Algonac High School Choir qualified to compete in the state MSVMA competition by achieving Division I ratings in District Competition. In addition, AHS Junior choir member Shelby Ramales received a Division I rating for her solo performance at the competition and qualified to compete at the state competition.  AHS Senior Tyler Uhl won the Fred Vincent Award, the first AHS recipient since 1974. The award is given to one senior football player in the entire Blue Water Area that excels in both citizenship and academics.  The AHS Girls Basketball Team won the Blue Water Area Conference Championship and District 44-B Championship.

 Over 300 student-athletes competed in the Fall, Winter, and Spring sports seasons and represented the Muskrats with extreme pride and sportsmanship.

 The Algonac High School P.A.S.S. Mentoring program grew once again and continues to be a model for mentoring programs throughout the county and state. The 2010-2011 program included 87 participants (44 Senior Mentors and 43 Freshman Mentees).

 The AHS Student Council collected over 1,100 items (3,600 lbs.) in their annual canned food drive to donate to those in need in the local area.  The AHS Chapter of the National Honors Society held its 72nd induction ceremony and gained 14 new members.

 NHS held two Blood Drives during the year and exceeded their target goal by collecting nearly 100 pints of blood.

The staff of AHS wishes to personally thank our graduating Seniors (and their parents) for helping us sustain our academic traditions and shaping our educational legacy. We wish you the best of luck in future endeavors and look forward to your accomplishments.

Go Muskrats!
