STEILACOOM HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSE GUIDELINES, EXPECTATIONS & GRADING

The following information describes the expectations, PE attire requirements and grading policy for Physical Education classes. Physical education is a valuable and required part of the school curriculum. Physical activity (P.E.) is critical in developing physical fitness, vital for one’s mental wellbeing, helps social, and academic skills. With this in mind, our overall program objective is to develop physical, mental and social skills through a variety of physical activities that can be incorporated into a lifelong fitness plan. The physical fitness testing, which is required for each class, represents the 5 components of fitness: Cardiovascular, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, and Body Composition.

The Physical Education State Standards are listed below and will be used to determine student’s grades in class. Standard 1: Students will demonstrate competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. Standard 2: Students will apply knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance. Standard 3: Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness. Standard 4: Students will exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. Standard 5: Students will recognize the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

Daily Points: 20 pts. (See grading scale on back)  Dress Down in PE attire (see below)  Activity; active participation; in daily activities as designated by the instructor. ABCs’; Attitude, Behavior and Cooperation are instrumental for a successful learning environment and positive experience for everyone. Attendance; being in class and in your assigned position or learning station on time (further description follows). Absolutely no swearing! Will result in a negative consequence. ***Running days are worth 40 points.***

Attendance and Participation = 100% of grade. Absence = 0 points Truancy = 0 points Disruptive influence = Negative 1-20 points Tardy = After School Detention / Loss of 10 points Field trips = Teacher discretion Attendance and participation are critical to success in physical education. Missing days will lower your grade. Make up for points missed because of “excused situations” should be arranged with the individual teacher. Absences are required to be made up by the end of the month of that absence, (except for absences during the last week of the month). A maximum of 10 excused absences can be made up per semester. Days absent beyond 10 and unexcused absences are not eligible to be made up. Make up forms available on teachers webpage’s.

ONLY 3 ABSENCES CAN BE MADE UP OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL WITH A PE MAKEUP FORM. AFTER 3 YOUR MUST MAKE UP YOUR ABSENCES BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL WITH A PE TEACHER! Lockers Bring your own lock and lock your clothes and valuables. Do not share lockers. If you fail to lock up your valuables they will eventually be stolen. Big lockers are used only for in season athletes. After your season is over you HAVE to switch over to a small PE locker. Small lockers are for P.E. students. The locker room is not always locked or supervised and anything left open or sitting on the benches is not safe. Double check that your lock is locked. THE PE TEACHERS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR BELONGINGS- LOCK THEM UP!

Cell phones are not permitted in class. The ONLY exception is during conditioning days. Cells phones will be taken away!

2016-2017 PE Attire SHS PE Dress Code Requirements: - Athletic shoes that cover the entire foot (i.e., sneakers or tennis shoes); socks are required - T-shirts with sleeves and high neckline - Athletic 7 inch inseam shorts or pants - Students should also bring sweatshirts, sweat pants, gloves, hats, etc. on cool days. PE classes will go outside as long as the weather permits.

Student will NOT wear: - tight, revealing clothing - non-athletic footwear - jeans - tank tops - sleeveless shirts - revealing clothing (for example, midriff bearing, short shorts) - see-through/mesh clothing, pajamas, underclothes of any kind - Inappropriate content on shirts, shorts, or sweatshirts - Students have to follow student handbook clothing requirements

PE uniforms will still be sold up in the bookkeeper’s office if you would like to purchase one. Shirts and shorts are $9.00 each, total $18.00 for both.

No Gym Clothes 1. Warning & given loaner gym clothes. 2. -10 points & given loaner gym clothes. 3. -10 points & given loaner gym clothes with phone call home. 4. -10 points & with phone call home and referral to administration

Timeline Line up for roll. Roll will be taken as soon as the bell rings. Released to Locker Room to get dressed (7 minutes). At the end of class you will be released to locker room to change (7 minutes). Wait in the foyer until the bell rings. Nobody goes up the steps until the bell rings.

Medical Excuses Students are required to bring a written note from a parent in order to be excused from physical education for the day. A doctor’s note must be presented for illness or injury lasting more than 3 days. Students are required to suit up and participate to the maximum degree that their illness/medical condition allows. Students are required to make up all missed work. All medications should be registered with the school nurse. If an inhaler is required, you may give an extra to your teacher (make sure your name is on it) and keep it with you during class.
