After Shep’s death two years ago, Joni continued to be 26 involved in the school; and 27 28 Whereas, CJDS has served the Columbia community for the past 29 twentyfour years. Currently the school serves 172 infants through 30 fifth graders. The school has received an AA rating, the highest 31 offered by the State, and over 95% of the students who graduate 32 fifth grade are accepted in the gifted, talented, and advanced 33 middle school magnet programs; and 34 35 Whereas, CJDS is the only private school to have University of 36 South Carolina student teachers, including USC “math buddies” 37 and Immersion Hebrew, which has children as young as 38 kindergarten speaking and understanding Hebrew; and 39 40 Whereas, one parent stated, “The feeling you get each day, when 41 you drop off and pick up knowing that your child has the 42 opportunity to attend school there it is truly touching. There is a

[3431] 2 1 special feeling knowing that your child is so loved, protected, 2 nurtured, and not to mention educated in all facets of life. I really 3 feel that the children there at CJDS are a step ahead in life”; and 4 5 Whereas, inquirybased learning featuring expert projects is a focus 6 of CJDS’s academic goals. The school believes that the goal of 7 education is for children to construct knowledge as opposed to 8 memorize information. This approach has been adopted in the new 9 South Carolina State Standards. The school’s technology includes 10 Chromebook devices for every child in second through fifth grade, 11 plus additional devices for other classrooms use daily; and 12 13 Whereas, CJDS believes that warm Jewish teaching forms a 14 positive Jewish identity, creates the beginnings of Jewish literacy, 15 and focuses on character development. In first grade, children 16 become fluent in reading, writing, and speaking Hebrew; and 17 18 Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives appreciate 19 the outstanding contributions that Shep and Joni Cutler have given 20 to the Cutler Jewish Day School over the years. Now, therefore, 21 22 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 23 24 That the members of the House of Representatives, by this 25 resolution, recognize and honor Joni Cutler and the late Shep 26 Cutler for their exceptional support and commitment to the Cutler 27 Jewish Day School, and congratulate the Cutler Jewish Day School 28 on its dedication. 29 30 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 31 the Cutler Jewish Day School and Joni Cutler. 32 XX 33
