MORE CUTS LIKELY AS UNION ACTION BITES INTO CHRISTMAS

Hello

Over the weekend Qantas published a revised schedule that reflects the cuts in services caused by the licenced engineers union's destructive action against our airline and our passengers.

The revised schedule starts today with almost 400 fewer domestic flights and around 60,000 fewer seats for the coming month.

With no sign of the licenced engineers union withdrawing their damaging bans, Qantas is bracing for further cuts to passenger services across the network in the lead up to the Christmas holiday period.

Contrary to claims made by the pilots' union Qantas is not walking away from negotiations. We are asking the pilots' union to withdraw their unrealistic claim that Jetstar and Jetconnect pilots should receive the same high wages and conditions as Qantas pilots. If Qantas were to agree to this claim it would drive up airfares for our customers and risk the jobs of other employees within Qantas. If the union removes this claim it will help progress negotiations towards reaching an agreement.

The current flight cancellations are direct result of Qantas being forced to ground five aircraft until further notice, in response to a backlog of maintenance caused by industrial action by the licenced engineers union.

The union has had overtime bans in place since the start of September, as well as an official instruction for its members to "go slow" on day today work, creating a large and growing backlog of maintenance.

If this industrial action continues, it is likely that Qantas will have to ground more aircraft as early as next week.

These impacts will be felt across the country and come at one of the busiest travelling periods of the year, characterised by a full major events calendar, school holidays and Christmas.

Apart from the usual busy holiday season from December through to February, this time of year also features a range of national and state events that are vital elements of the tourism and event calendars of all Australian states.

For example:

Tuesday 1 November will see the running of the 151st Melbourne Cup The Presidents Cup November 14-20 (Melbourne) The Australian Masters golf December 15-18 (Melbourne) Mary Poppins until December 17 (Sydney) Jersey Boys until December 18 (Sydney) Performances by K.D. Lang 22 November (Queensland), Dolly Parton 25 and 26 November (Queensland) and Elton John 30 November (Queensland) Brisbane International Tennis 1-8 January 2012 (Queensland) Australian Open Tennis 16-29 January 2012 (Melbourne) Santos Tour Down Under 15-22 January 2012 (Adelaide) Princely Treasures European Masterpieces 1600-1800 until 9 January 2012 (Perth) V 8 Supercars Falken Tasmania Challenge 11-13 November (Tasmania)

These events - and the businesses that rely upon them - are being held to ransom by a coordinated and damaging attack on Qantas and our passengers from the pilots' union, the licenced engineers' union and the Transport Workers' Union.

These unions continue to inconvenience our passengers, damage our business and impact on the wider Australian community and economy.

Hello

As you may be aware the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association announced yesterday that they will suspend work stoppages between today and October 28, the date of the Qantas Annual General Meeting. This means that the strike by the union planned for Adelaide on Tuesday October 18, along with the rolling one hour stoppages planned across Australian ports (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide) on different days of the week, have been cancelled, however overtime bans and work to rule remain in place.

Whilst we welcome the unions' decision it does not change the inconvenience experienced by our customers and the Impact on our aircraft and our business.

The union has had overtime bans in place for the past three weeks as well as an official instruction for its members to go-slow on day to day work. These bans are still in place and the union has indicated they will remain in place until at least Christmas.

The biggest impact on Qantas and our passengers comes from these overtime bans and go-slow on work which has caused a backlog of maintenance. This is why we have been forced to ground five domestic aircraft and cancel 400 flights from Monday 17 October for at least a month. Despite the union's decision to temporarily suspend some strike action, unfortunately the damage has already been done and these aircraft will remain grounded.

We will continue to work hard to minimise any disruption to our passengers, including notifying customers if their flights have been cancelled or delayed.

We have published a new schedule which will start on Monday 17 October with almost 400 less domestic flights and around 60,000 less seats for the next month.

Hello

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has today informed the Australian Stock exchange that the financial impact on Qantas from the industrial campaign being taken by the licensed engineers' union, pilots' union and Transport Workers' Union has reached $68 million.

The uncertainty caused to passengers by the ongoing industrial action is costing Qantas approximately $15 million per week in lost revenue.

The drawn out and coordinated industrial campaign by three unions is now having a major impact on Qantas and on stakeholders in tourism, events and related industries.

At $68 million, this is a significant impact on the company and the costs will continue to rise. In comparison, the impact on Qantas from grounding aircraft during the recent volcanic ash cloud was $49 million.

Agreeing to the union's unreasonable demands would have a far greater cost on the company, including risking the future of Qantas.

Qantas remains committed to a comprehensive strategy to build a better and stronger Qantas.

The total number of passengers impacted by the industrial action since August, including today's strikes by the TWU, is 70,922 from 129 cancelled flights and 387 delayed flights. In addition, Qantas has grounded seven aircraft – four Boeing 767s and three Boeing 737s - due to ongoing concerns about the reliability of the fleet and a backlog of maintenance due to union action. This has led to the cancellation of 500 flights and the removal of 88,000 seats from sale.

If you have any questions, please contact me on 0413 120 341 or Vicki Bon on 0408 284 435.

Regards Jim.
