The table of contents on the next page shows all of the offerings at a quick glance. All of the individual descriptions for each workshop listed follow this feature. You may also simply click on the workshop title in the table of contents and it will take you directly to that particular workshop’s description. Please note: Some workshops have prerequisite requirements. Where this is the case, be sure you have completed the prerequisites before you register for that workshop.

To register for workshops, simply sign in to the district website with your username and password, and go to the Professional Development link under Shortcuts for... on the home page. Click on the Calendar link. Select the desired workshop in the appropriate date box, and when the Event Detail box opens click the Register button at the bottom of the window. Each workshop must be registered for separately.

You will notice that registration for all workshops must be completed by March 1. Please adhere to the deadline dates to reserve your space.

An automated confirmation email is sent immediately after you register. Each workshop requires a minimum number of participants. If a workshop is cancelled due to low enrollment numbers, you will receive a cancellation email.

LITERACY

Accelerating Progress in our Neediest Emergent Readers and Writers, Grade 1 (all staff) and Grade 2-8 (self-contained special education teachers only) Cindy LaSalvia and Keira Scussa, Reading Specialists

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP: This 2-session workshop will explore strategies related to early reading and writing. Participants will examine guided reading texts in an effort to gain an understanding of their structure, and how they support students’ abilities as their reading levels increase. The connection between reading and writing will also be explored as well as strategies to help students use both in strategic ways. Specific Reading Recovery strategies will be integrated and demonstrated in order to create continuity between students receiving supplemental literacy support and their work within the classroom. Teachers will also have an opportunity to conduct a personal case study so that the lessons learned from the individual professional development sessions can be applied to students immediately. Video demonstrations as well as PLC protocols will be utilized by the presenters throughout the series.

Participants will:  Gain an understanding of emergent literacy behaviors and strategies;  Examine Guided Reading texts to determine how they are structured to support students’ burgeoning literacy skills;  Explore ways to support struggling emergent readers and writers in the classroom setting;  Conduct a personal case study as they utilize the strategies gained throughout the sessions.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP: This workshop will focus on assessing student writing for the purpose of guiding instruction. Participants will unpack several pieces with common writing “issues” and discuss teaching points for conferences. They will also watch videos of conferences being held with students whose writing has similar characteristics.

The Daily Five, Grades Kindergarten-2 Danielle Magulick and Stacey Reedy

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP: The Daily Five is a student-driven management structure designed to fully engage students in reading and writing experiences. This structure assists students in developing independent literacy habits, so that the teacher can focus on small group/guided reading instruction. All participants will read the professional book The Daily Five by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. Each session will involve discussion on both the philosophy and specific components of the Daily Five. Participants will have opportunities to see actual student work from each of the five literacy tasks, and leave with procedures and strategies that can be used in the classroom to successfully implement the Daily Five.

Participants will:  Read the assigned text;  Review classroom data to use for discussion at each meeting;  Respond to data collected by others and shared during the sessions;  Leave with specific lessons and strategies to apply to their classroom instruction.

Particular attention will be given to how to notice patterns in students’ work and responses, and how to delineate teaching implications from those patterns.

It will focus on the four components that are utilized in this structure on a daily basis. Each session enables participants to learn through a cycle of taking in new information, reflection, and application. The final session will also include time for make-and-take resources. Sessions incorporate:

 Opportunities to experience Morning Meeting as adult learners and see MM in action in classroom snippets;  Time to discuss and reflect on new learning; and  Structures for planning and reflecting on classroom application of new learning.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP: The Common Core Standards have an equal emphasis on the reading of informational texts when compared to fiction texts. This workshop will explore effectively using informational texts in guided reading. Participants will learn how to use nonfiction text features to support student understanding and instructional strategies that lend themselves well to nonfiction. Planning nonfiction guided reading lessons will be a focus of the workshop including teachers planning their own lessons.

Workshop participants should bring multiple nonfiction texts that they can use to plan lessons for their students.

There is an optional follow-up (Part 2) to this workshop.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP: The focus of this 3-session book club will be the newly released 2nd edition of Debbie Miller’s book. The book lays out over the course of a school year the progression of comprehension instruction in primary classrooms. Participants will discuss how the contents of the book can be infused into our school district’s curriculum as well as explore at least one new instructional strategy/tool at each session. Participants will have the option to facilitate/co-facilitate an activity and/or share effective strategies they are using with their students.

The last 30 minutes of each session will be given to participants for reading time.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP: This workshop is for teachers who are familiar with ActivInspire and are ready to take flipcharts to the next level. You will learn ways to make flipcharts more interactive by utilizing features such as drag and drop, revealing, creating containers, magic erasers, magic ink, and annotating over the desktop. You will also learn how to insert files, sound, video clips, etc. into your flipcharts. The goal is for you to leave this workshop knowing how to create flipcharts that are more interactive and engaging for students.

ActivExpressions is a user-friendly Learner Response System that ensures every voice counts. Building Bridges: Carrying Reading Strategies into the Content Area, Grades 6-8 Sandi Groff

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP: This two-session workshop will focus on practical ways to incorporate reading instruction into the content area. Participants will examine effective strategies for teaching students to determine importance, visualize, and make inferences when reading non-fiction text. The use of flexible grouping, guide-o-ramas, and double entry journals will all be discussed as ways to increase comprehension while meeting the needs of ALL learners. Participants should bring an article(s) or other text(s), as time will be provided for teachers to prepare a lesson for use in their own classroom.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP: Are you tired of your students tuning out? Do you want your students to be actively engaged? This workshop will provide teachers with a variety of techniques to actively engage every student and allow each one to demonstrate their depth of knowledge and understanding. ”Total Participation Techniques” provide teachers with the means to ensure higher-order thinking as well as formative assessment. Teachers will leave with techniques they can use in their classrooms the very next day. (Based on the work of Persida and William Himmele.)
