Volunteers are vital to help us in our vision of ensuring that no one who has served our country should have to battle blindness alone. This role description is designed to give you clarity about what you are going to do and who will support you in it.
Volunteer role title Home Visitor Volunteer
Life beyond sight loss St Dunstan’s since 1915 Purpose of the role
As a Home Visitor Volunteer you would be at the forefront of providing vital help for our members. Basic daily tasks such as shopping, preparing food or sorting mail can be extremely challenging for some of our members. Your role would be to support them in these activities whilst providing them with a friendly, sociable person to talk to. You will be providing the opportunity for social interaction by facilitating the pursuit of hobbies or shared interests.

Key activities
Communicate with members in their homes in a way that makes them feel relaxed and safe. Support members to carryout out daily activities that they may otherwise struggle to complete. Activities will vary from member to member but will not include personal care work. Encourage member involvement in social and recreational activities and if relevant assist the member to participate in these e.g. Blind Veterans UK Lunch Clubs, hobbies, local community events. Maintain regular contact with staff including relaying any concerns that you may have about our members.
Skills required
Enthusiastic and cheerful with a positive attitude Reliable, punctual and trustworthy Experience volunteering in a similar role would be beneficial Need to be aged over 18 years. Good listening and interpersonal skills Patience and empathy when in the company of people with a vision impairment Ability to travel to and from Member’s home

We will give you regular support from your appointed manager and ensure that you receive the appropriate training and induction for you to full fill your role to your full capability.

As you will have access to vulnerable adults, an enhanced criminal record check will be required. Having a conviction does not automatically prevent volunteering, and any such information is handled sensitively. Blind Veteran’s UK complies with the relevant codes of practice produced by the Disclosure & Barring Service (England and Wales). These are available on request.
