9th September 2014
Dear Parent
Welcome back everyone and a special welcome to our new children and parents. We hope everyone had an enjoyable summer break and we are now looking forward to another happy school year.
The new Head Girl and Head Boy, school council for this new school year and team captains will be elected shortly.
We would like to welcome to our team, Mr R Knowles, Class 4 teacher, Mrs S Platts, our new play leader at lunchtimes and Mrs E Oughton, our new mid day supervisor.
We are also sorry to hear that Mrs Adams, teaching assistant has been successful in securing a different job during the summer holiday. We wish her well for the future and thank her for all her hard work here. We will be training other members of staff in Forest School provision as soon as possible.
The following information is very important:
Breakfast Club From Tuesday 9th September we will be continuing to run our ‘before school breakfast activity club’. The cost of the club will be 60p per day. Miss Mugridge will be running the Club every morning together with a specialist sports instructor. The Club will start at 8.00am and latecomers can come to the Club until 8.10am when the club will then be closed.
We do have a small number of children who have been regularly arriving from 8.25am – there is no supervision in class at this time. We expect children to arrive for breakfast club (please use the main reception entrance) at 8am. All other children to arrive at 8.40am if accompanied by parents who are listening to their children read in class and 8.45am for all other children. This is for your children’s safety. Parents of children in Classes 1 and 2 are welcome to come into school at 8.40am to listen to their child read in the classroom. All parents should enter by the main door for security purposes. All unaccompanied children should enter by the bottom door. Please could all parents try to encourage all children to eat breakfast and have a drink before they come to school as it greatly increases their learning capacity and ability to concentrate. Please ensure that your child is in school ready to learn by 8.55am. We do keep a log of children who regularly arrive after this time.
As all parents are aware, the school has a behaviour policy. All staff promote a positive behaviour approach in school whereby all children are praised and rewarded for positive behaviour. All children are encouraged to make good choices and understand that there are consequences when their behaviour is inappropriate.
Children earn ‘good choice’ tickets throughout the week and one prize ticket is drawn out from each ‘class box’ during the reward assembly which this year will take place on Friday mornings at 9am. Children also earn team points for their work and the winning team captains receive the ‘cup’ each week. Each term the winning team receive a reward and the overall winning team at the end of the academic year will have a trip chosen by the school council as a reward.
Golden time will start again on Friday afternoons from 2.30 – 3pm. The class with the highest attendance from the previous week has first choice of their golden time activity. Activities may include colouring, hammer beads, art, bingo, football, lego/board games, table tennis, story telling. If children move to orange or red on the behaviour chart they will miss part or the whole of Golden Time. Golden Time will start for the children on Friday 19th September 2014.
The school is using the text messaging service very successfully. Please check your mobile phone regularly and particularly on a Monday when we will be texting you if your child has achieved a Special Achiever’s Award. This will be presented in our ‘Winning Friday Assembly’ from 9 – 9.30am and we hope that you and members of your family or friends will be able to attend. It is important to notify us immediately if you change your mobile phone number. If you are not receiving texts please contact Mrs Cornfield.
Class teachers will be sending out information about what the children will be learning about this term I am sure this will give you a valuable insight into your child’s education.
Research has shown that children’s learning capacity is increased when they have regular access to water. We have found that the provision of water bottles in the classroom has had a positive impact on children’s learning. All children need a water bottle in school and our new children have been given one. The water bottles will be sent home on Friday to be washed and they must be returned on Monday mornings. Replacement bottles can be brought from school for £1.50, but we have a limited supply, or you may supply your own. (Please ensure these are named). School dinners are £1.95 per day (£9.75per week). Please note only the Juniors now have to pay, school dinners are free for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. The Government expect all children to try school dinners. Please be assured if there is a problem with your child not eating their school dinner we will contact you.
ALL CHEQUES FOR DINNER MONEY ARE PAYABLE TO DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL. Dinner money can be paid weekly or half termly. This half term is 6 weeks and 4 days so dinner money will be £66.30
Please could dinner money be brought into school each Monday morning in a clearly labelled envelope or purse.
ALL OTHER CHEQUES eg for school uniform, school trips are PAYABLE TO HORSLEY WOODHOUSE SCHOOL PRIVATE FUND. Thank you.
Confidential information about pupils regarding contact telephone numbers, asthma, hay fever, and any allergies including food allergies needs to be updated. Please complete the attached form and return to school as soon as possible. Thank you.
Throughout the school year children may be taken outside of school to study the local area as part of the topic work. We also walk to Church for special services and the church hall, for concerts. Press photographers sometimes are invited into school to record special events. Pupils have the opportunity to use the internet but I must stress that it is restricted access under adult supervision. Please complete and return the attached proforma giving your permission for your child to participate in these activities. Please see the attached information with respect to the necessary data schools need to keep on children. Thank you.
We would very much appreciate help from parents again this year in the classroom with activities such as reading and craft. We also need ‘spotters’ for swimming. If you are able to help in any way would you please indicate on the attached slip which activities, days and times you could come into school. Parental help is invaluable.
As the new school year begins could I remind parents about the school 25 Club which is drawn each term for a first prize of £25, a second prize of £15 and a third prize of £10. Hardly National Lottery prizes but the subscription of £4.00 per term makes a valuable contribution to school funds. If you would like to try your luck please contact Mrs Cornfield as soon as possible.
The Governors have agreed that school uniform is compulsory. It is expected that all children wear school uniform. This includes sensible footwear preferably black shoes or plain black trainers for the autumn term. No flip flop style footwear please. The school colour for sweatshirts or cardigans is red. All school uniform must be named. No jewellery should be worn with the exception of a watch and no nail varnish please. To avoid having large amounts of stock in school, we plan to order school uniform once every half term. Please see Mrs Cornfield if you wish to order school uniform as soon as possible.
All children must have a named PE kit in school comprising of skirt/shorts, t shirt and pumps which needs to be kept in school at all times and can be taken home during the holidays for washing. As most PE is outside, a sweatshirt and jogging bottoms are also needed please.
Long hair should be tied back at all times for health and safety reasons.
If any parent needs to see a class teacher in the morning please enter school via the main entrance.
Remember that the teacher needs to be in the classroom ready to teach at 8.55am.
At the end of the school day, at 3.15pm, Reception children will be leaving via the Main Entrance and Year 1 and Class 2 children will leave school by the bottom door and through the small school gate. Children in classes 3 and 4 will leave school via the hall fire doors near the main gate.
Parents are asked to wait for their children in the car parking area. Parents need to supervise their children in this area and not allow them to wander around the side and back of the school or swing on the bars out side the emergency exit at the back of the hall. This is for your own child’s safety. If your child is being collected by someone other than yourself please let us know as soon as possible.
Malcolm, our school crossing patrol, is extremely diligent and we are most fortunate in having such a person. However, he does need to have a clear view of the road in order to ensure the safety of all our children when crossing them. Therefore any parent transporting their children to or from school by car must park well away from the school entrance. Thank you for your anticipated co-operation.
Could you please let us know if your child is allowed to walk home on their own by signing and returning the attached proforma.
It is absolutely essential that you contact school if your child is absent from school for any reason. Thank you. Your child’s education is a partnership between school and home and the staff and I are only too willing to discuss any concerns you may have. So please do not hesitate to contact us.
Please could all the attached pro-formas be completed and returned to school as soon as possible. Thank you.
