Job Title: Member Engagement Manager

Reports to: Director of Strategy and Members’ Programmes

Department: Members’ Programmes

The Microbiology Society is a membership charity for scientists interested in microbes, their effects and their practical uses. It is one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe with a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools. Our members have a unique depth and breadth of knowledge about the discipline. The Society’s role is to help unlock and harness the potential of that knowledge.

Purpose Reporting to the Director of Strategy and Members’ Programmes and working across the Society, the Member Engagement Manager will be responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of a new member engagement programme at the Society. Over the next five years, the Society’s principal goal is to develop, expand and strengthen the networks available to our members so that they can generate new knowledge about microbes and ensure that it is shared with other communities. This new member engagement programme will directly help us to achieve our strategic aims, maximising the involvement of members in Society activities.

Duties The Member Engagement Manager, working collaboratively across the Society, will have responsibility for the identification, promotion and coordination of member engagement activities both within the Society and beyond. Working closely with the Director for Strategy and Members’ Programmes, the Member Engagement Manager will develop a programme that enables members

Key responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

Development of member engagement at the Society

Work closely with the Director of Strategy and Members’ Programmes to develop a programme of member engagement activities at the Society, ensuring activities contribute to the strategic plan.

Work with teams across the organisation to develop and deliver resources and training to support members to get involved with engagement activities on the Society’s behalf, contributing content to the members’ only area of the Society’s website.

Implement appropriate evaluation methods for all member engagement activities and contributing to evaluation reports to determine how future activities could be improved.

Coordination of member engagement activities

Proactive management of members engaging in Society activities, working across the Society to provide support and guidance to members carrying out activities on behalf of the Society.

Responsible for the collation and dissemination of opportunities for members to engage in at the Society, including keeping up to date with relevant external opportunities and their offers to our members to get involved.

Liaise with the Communications team to ensure all member engagement opportunities are clearly communicated to all audiences, including contributing to Microbiology Today and the Society’s digital platforms.

Liaise with the Marketing team to raise the profile of the Society through member engagement activities, ensuring that all activities are appropriately branded and deliver optimum outcomes in terms of the Society’s strategic aims.

Key point of contact for member enquiries by phone and email regarding opportunities for getting involved at the Society or representing the Society at external events.

Support the coordination, organisation and promotion of opportunities for members to share experiences and best practices, such as through local and regional networking events.

Monitor expenditure on member engagement in collaboration with the Director of Strategy and Members’ Programmes.

Person Specification

Essential Degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent

Significant experience (a minimum of three years’ at least) of volunteer management

Ability to build effective relationships with key stakeholders and volunteer scientists engaging in the Society’s activities

An understanding of the unique identity of membership organisations and value of being a member

Some experience of budget management

Outstanding communication, writing and presentation skills

Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure

Ability to work on own initiative as well as being part of a high-performing team

Desirable

Knowledge of and/or interest in microbiology

Able to facilitate workshops and training to a wide audience
