Formulations Manager, Biologicals New Leaf Symbiotics (NLS) is looking for a manager with experience in contemporary biological formulations, regulatory affairs, and the ability to lead agricultural product development. NLS company headquarters and laboratories are located at the BRDG Park facility at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, in St. Louis, Missouri. NLS is a venture-backed agricultural biotech company focused on providing biologically-based products. NLS’ Prescriptive Biologics™ platform integrates the company’s extensive collection of plant- associated bacteria and a deep understanding of genomics to create effective, environmentally responsible products. The Formulations Manager will use the platform to deliver products that optimize the intersection between host plant genetics and the phyto-microbiome. NLS products are designed to improve plant health, increase yield, control pests, and have a positive impact on contemporary environmental concerns.

Product Development Responsibilities and Duties: . Coordinate formulation development to insure a balance between patent portfolio advancement, Product Development (PD), regulatory affairs, and R&D. . Coordinate manufacturing methods to address toxicology/ecotoxicology, 5-batch processes, product chemistry, CSF, and requirements for waivers related to product registration. . Develop new formulations for microbial products, including spray-dried powders, dry granules, seed treatment formulations, and stabilized liquid formulations; aqueous suspensions, SCs, ECs and micro-emulsions. . Conduct stability studies, tank mix compatibility studies, rain-fastness, spray-ability, adjuvant compatibility, and other studies to ensure the commercial viability of formulated products. . In collaboration with the Fermentation group, design and execute downstream processing experiments – filtration, centrifugation, evaporation, lyophilization, spray drying, granulation, fluidized bed, rheology, particle size analysis, etc. . Optimize and scale formulations to reach target yields and costs. . Mange contract manufacturing locations, transferring processes, and supervising runs. . Develop innovative and effective formulations while forging collaborations with state-of- the-art companies, research institutions, and ingredient suppliers. Qualifications: . Understanding of biological products including natural products chemistry and microbial physiology of bacteria, filamentous bacteria, and fungi. . Creativity and innovation with scale up, yield enhancement and process cost reduction using mixtures of novel microorganisms. . Industrial experience with technical transfer of manufacturing process and formulations of biological products. . Energetic and self-motivated individual able to work in a team environment with relentlessly progressing schedules. . Capable of delivering high quality scientific presentations internally and at external conferences.

Degree(s) in Microbiology, Applied Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering with industrial experience in development of biologically-based products in the food, agrichemical or specialty chemical industry. . Experience with fermentation and formulation of microorganisms that produce natural products. . Integration of formulations in up and downstream processes: filtration, centrifugation, evaporation, drying, etc. . 35% travel to contract manufacturing locations to transfer processes and supervise runs. Preferred: . PhD/MS in microbiology/chemical engineering with industrial experience. . Undergraduate technical degree (Chem-E), with MS or MBA and 2-5 years industrial experience. . Experience with agricultural field applications technology and formulations of biological products. . A passion for sustainable agriculture and biological solutions. Compensation: . The incumbent will be hired at a level commensurate with their knowledge, skills and abilities. The salary range is competitive.
