STUDENT WELLNESS

I. Goals for Wellness:

A. Nutrition Education

1) Schools shall provide nutrition education that is offered at the appropriate grade level as part of a sequential comprehensive standards-based program. 2) The District will support parents’ efforts to provide a healthy diet for their children.

B. Physical Activity

1) District schools shall strive to provide opportunities for developmental appropriate physical activity for all students such as intramurals, recess, clubs, and athletics. 2) Schools will provide information to parents to encourage physical activity in their children’s lives. 3) Schools will ensure that physical activity facilitated on school grounds is kept safe and well maintained.

C. Other School Based Activity

1) The Food Service Supervisor will be properly credentialed according to professional standards to administer the school food service program. 2) Professional development in nutrition shall be provided for all district nutrition staff. 3) Students and parents may be involved in menu selections through various means. 4) Wellness policy will be posted on the web. 5) Students and community will have access to district outdoor physical activity facilities outside the school hours.

II. Required Nutrition Guidelines:

A. A La Carte

Foods:  Any item that is served ala carte, if it is a component of the National School Lunch menu for that school day, is exempt from these guidelines except for the limit on pre-fried and flash-fried foods and will not be offered more than three times per week.  A la carte food items must comply with USDA regulations prohibiting the sale of foods of Minimal Nutritional Value (7CFR210 and 220)  Portion sizes will not exceed the serving size (less than 250 calories per serving) of foods served in the NSLP or NSBP  A la carte foods will include a variety of choices of nutritious foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat or non-fat diary items  At least 90% of the food items offered will meet the following criteria per serving: Less than 35% of the total calories from fat No more than 35% of weight from total added sugar No more than 250 calories per selling unit  K-4th grade students may only purchase one a la carte snack or beverage daily with the exception of milk, 100% juice or water.  Provide minimal to no trans fatty acids..

Beverages:

 A la carte beverages must comply with USDA regulations prohibiting the sale of Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value (7CFR 210 and 220)  100% of the beverages offered K-4 grade will be milk (not to exceed 8 oz.), water (not to exceed 12 oz.) and 100% fruit juice (not to exceed 8 oz.)  75% of the beverages offered grade 5-12 will be milk (not to exceed 16 oz.), water (not to exceed 16 oz.) and 100% fruit juice (not to exceed 12 oz.)  Any beverage that does not meet the criteria in the above mentioned standards will not exceed 150 calories per package or 35 grams of sugar per package.

B. Vending

 The sale of Beverages of Minimal Nutritional Value will not be allowed in vending machines that are located in areas accessible to students until after the end of the school day. The sale of food will not be available in vending machines.  A minimum of 75% of the beverages offered will be milk (not to exceed 16 oz.), water (not to exceed 16 oz.), and 100% fruit juice (not to exceed 12 oz.)  Any beverage that does not meet the criteria in the above mentioned standards will not exceed 150 calories per package or 35 grams of sugar per package.  Vending will not be available to grades K-4.  Appropriate software will be utilized to identity lower fat items

C. Fundraisers

 Fundraising activities involving the sale of food or beverages will only take place outside of the scheduled school day and are encouraged to comply with USDA regulations prohibiting the sale of Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value (7CFR 210 and 220).

D. Classroom Parties/Celebrations/Rewards

 Parents will be encouraged to provide only healthy food for classroom celebrations as defined in this section.  Teachers will not provide food as a reward for classroom or school activities unless the reward is an activity that promotes a positive nutrition message (ie., guest chef, field trip to a farm or farmers market, etc.).  Classroom parties will offer minimal amount of foods (maximum 2-3 items) that contain added sugar as the first ingredient and will provide the following: o Fresh fruits and vegetables. o Water, 100% fruit juice or milk.  In addition, Food Service Departments will offer party lists/menus that include food and beverage choices that:  Are moderate in sodium content.

 Provide minimal to no trans fatty acids.  Provide items that contain > 2 grams of fiber/serving.  Offer fresh fruits and vegetables  Offer water, 100% fruit juice or milk as the beverage choices.  Do not offer any Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value (USDA regulation 7CFR 210 and 220).  Parents and teachers will be encouraged to purchase foods and beverages from this menu of items.

E. School Stores

 The sale of foods and beverages will not be offered during the school day.

F. Faculty Lounges

 Faculty is encouraged to set the example for students. Students are not likely to believe that nutrition policies are beneficial if they see faculty consuming foods and beverages that do not align with the school policy.
