JOHN V. PLATT, 12 ASSOCIATE PASTOR OF SPRING VALLEY BAPTIST 13 CHURCH IN COLUMBIA, FOR HIS FIFTYTWO YEARS OF 14 GOSPEL MINISTRY AND TO WISH HIM GOD’S RICHEST 15 BLESSINGS AS HE CONTINUES TO SERVE THE LORD. 16 17 Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of 18 Representatives honors those individuals who give tirelessly of 19 themselves to succor the souls of men; and 20 21 Whereas, the Reverend Dr. John V. Platt, associate pastor of 22 Spring Valley Baptist Church in Columbia, stands among their 23 number as an outstanding minister of the Gospel, one much 24 admired by colleagues, congregation, and area residents at large; 25 and 26 27 Whereas, in preparation for a long and fruitful ministry, John Platt 28 graduated from Denmark High School and furthered his studies at 29 Furman University in Greenville, where he earned a bachelor’s 30 degree in sociology. Proceeding to graduate work, he earned a 31 bachelor of divinity at Southeastern Theological Seminary in 32 Wake Forest, North Carolina, and his doctor of ministry at Drew 33 University in Madison, New Jersey; and 34 35 Whereas, in the early days, he served the Lord at both Sycamore 36 Baptist Church in Sycamore and Kingsburg Baptist Church in 37 Kingsburg as a student pastor; and 38 39 Whereas, he began his first fullfledged pastorate in 1963 with 40 Dalzell Baptist Church in Dalzell, where he served until 1966. 41 Three more pastorates followed, at Hillcrest Baptist Church in 42 Laurens (19661974), Fairforest Baptist Church in Fairforest
[4777] 2 1 (associate pastor, 19741976), and Clearview Baptist Church 2 (19771980). During these years, Dr. Platt also served as a chaplain 3 for the South Carolina Department of Corrections (19651966 and 4 19741977); and 5 6 Whereas, from 1980 to 1995, John Platt, in a change of ministry 7 focus, became director of missions for Moriah Baptist Association 8 in Lancaster. He next served in the same capacity for Columbia 9 Metro Baptist Association from 1995 to 2003, at which time he 10 began ministering as an interim pastor; and 11 12 Whereas, after interim pastorates at Westside Baptist Church in 13 West Columbia and Stephen Greene Baptist Church in Winnsboro, 14 Dr. Platt took up his duties at Spring Valley Baptist Church in 15 Columbia as interim minister of education and administration and 16 later as associate pastor, a post he fills with distinction to the 17 present day; and 18 19 Whereas, noted as a humble, courageous man of Christian 20 character, one of whom it truly may be said, “Well done, good and 21 faithful servant,” Dr. Platt has demonstrated to others how to be 22 “steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the 23 Lord”; and 24 25 Whereas, to celebrate his life and fiftytwo years of Gospel 26 ministry, the congregation of Spring Valley Baptist Church has set 27 aside Sunday, February 26, 2012, as “John Platt Day” and will host 28 a program and reception to honor Dr. Platt; and 29 30 Whereas, the House of Representatives, cognizant of his many 31 years of spiritual nourishment of the people of South Carolina, 32 wishes to express its grateful thanks to Dr. John Platt and wish him 33 God’s best as he continues to run the race the Lord has set before 34 him. Now, therefore, 35 36 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 37 38 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 39 by this resolution, honor the Reverend Dr. John V. Platt, associate 40 pastor of Spring Valley Baptist Church in Columbia, for his 41 fiftytwo years of Gospel ministry and wish him God’s richest 42 blessings as he continues to serve the Lord. 43
