Buried Treasure (Prep-Year 2)

YOUNG ARCHAEOLOGISTS PROGRAM Education Brochure 2013

The Young Archaeologists Program provides fully integrated education experiences for primary and secondary school students, combining history, science, mathematics and English in a fun, inquiry-based learning approach.

Starting in April 2013, we will have two activities on offer:

Buried Treasure Curriculum links: Community/local history AusVELS: Foundation – Level 2 Age: Prep – Year 2

What interesting things are buried under the ground? And what can they tell us about the past? In Buried Treasure, students have a go at fieldwork: excavating, sieving, and washing artefacts. In the lab, they examine and draw artefacts, have a closer look at some interesting historical items, ask questions about archaeology, and discuss how things get in the ground and what we can learn from the things we find.

At the end of the session, teachers receive a teaching pack, with classroom activities that build on students’ Buried Treasure education experience.

CSI: Archaeology Curriculum links: Australian history Topics: “Children in Melbourne” or “Chinese Immigrants in Victoria” AusVELS: Level 3 – 10 Age: Year 3 – Year 10

In this activity, students will become forensic archaeologists, examining surface finds at our Australian historical dig site. They will draw on skills such as measuring, data recording, mapping, and artefact photography to document the site. Once this is completed, students then interpret what they have found in the lab, consulting historical records and archaeology fact sheets to determine what type of site they have found, who lived/worked there, and why the site was abandoned. Once they have gathered all the facts, they then construct a factual narrative, answering the most important archaeological questions: what, when, where, who and how.

latrobe.edu.au/youngarchaeologistsprogram This hands-on historical Australia activity is tailor-made for your students’ ability and/or year level, and focuses on life in Victoria between settlement and the early 20th Century. It combines archaeology, history, science and English in a fun, inquiry-based learning approach. Current choice of topics is “Children in Melbourne” or “Chinese Immigrants in Australia”.

At the end of the session, teachers receive a teaching pack, with classroom activities that build on students’ CSI: Archaeology education experience.
