Position: ASSISTANT RESIDENT DIRECTOR, STAFFING & TRAINING

GENERAL: The Assistant Resident Director positions require individuals who have demonstrated maturity and ability to support and interpret Housing mission and values. This position requires interpersonal skills including listening, written and oral communication. Assistant Resident Directors must have efficient problem solving capability, administrative and organizational skills and ability to mentor and advise student staff. This position requires an understanding of needs for a diverse student population including first-year, upper-division, and family housing residents. It is preferred that Assistant Resident Directors have had prior experience in coordinating educational and social programs and managing budgets but it is not required. Assistant Resident Directors must maintain a team-oriented attitude; have leadership ability and work to establish a positive liaison with professional and student staff. All Assistant Resident Directors assist with departmental initiatives for student staff including programming, training, selection, leadership, and judicial initiatives.

The Assistant Resident Director, Staffing & Training (ARD, S&T) reports to one full-time professional staff member and works to accomplish all goals set forth in this job description.

The Assistant Resident Director, Staffing & Training assists with the training, selection and recognition logistics for approximately 150 student-staff in Housing and maintains ongoing evaluation of these processes. The Assistant Resident Director, Staffing & Training’s primary role is to create a positive and professional liaison between professional and student staff. The ARD, S&T can achieve this by facilitating on-going communication and program development between student staff and professional staff as it relates to upcoming procedures and processes.

At the beginning of Fall Quarter, the ARD, S&T has the primary responsibility to assist with the coordination of student staff arrival including distributing staff shirts and training manuals and oversee the Spirit Program during Fall Training. The ARD, S&T may also coordinate the off-site training and development location for Fall Training and assist with the end-of-training recognition banquet/activity including supervising the slideshow and/or preparing student staff awards. At the end of Fall Training, the ARD, S&T is primarily responsible to facilitate, distribute and analyze student staff evaluations and is responsible for recruiting and meeting weekly with a student staff fall training committee to make improvements for the following year.

The ARD, S&T also supports the department during selection by assisting with the design and placement of recruitment advertising for student staff selection. This includes coordinating all poster publicity as well as creating and maintaining the on-line recruitment sites with the Marketing Director. The ARD, S&T may also function as the contact person for student staff who need to sign up for all processes related to student staff selection including informational sessions and interview events. The ARD, S&T has the main responsibility in maintaining all personnel databases and files of each student staff member. ARD will also facilitate a section of the leadership seminar.

The Assistant Resident Director, Staffing & Training may have special projects as it relates to assisting the professional staff in coordinating student staff attendance at local, regional, or national conferences such as WACUHO, ACPA, or Southern RAP. The ARD, S&T may also coordinate other department-wide projects such as distributing ACUHO-I surveys to student staff and coordinating the annual student-staff pictures. The ARD, S&T is responsible for administrating quarterly certificates for student staff who achieve outstanding GPAs.

The ARD, S&T will have the opportunity to attend conferences, including workshops and seminars to develop professional skills and training strategies as it relates to the selection and training of a diverse student staff. The Assistant Resident Director, Staffing & Training is responsible for working a minimum of twenty (20) office hours per week.

Overall duties include:  Serve as the primary liaison between professional and student staff.  Assist with logistics for a multiple training program, including Fall, Winter and Spring for all student staff.  Evaluate effectiveness of all student staff training programs by administering and analyzing program session evaluation forms and implementing a student staff fall training committee.  Assist with the distribution of training schedules, shirts, and manuals to 150 student staff.  Oversee the planning, design and placement of recruitment advertising for student staff selection.  Design and maintain upkeep of all on-line recruitment sites with Marketing Director for student staff selection.  Develop and maintain personnel files for all student staff including electronic spreadsheets.  Support and administer all recognition efforts including Fall Training Spirit Program and Smart Cookie programs and staff banquets.  Participate in the campus apartment and family housing duty rotation to respond to emergency and non- emergency situations. Serve as the primary back up for apartment RA and family housing CA staff in International Village, Bannockburn Village and Plaza, Stonehaven Apartments, Oban, Falkirk and Family Housing.  Support community development by initiating disciplinary and counseling processes.  Assist professional staff with special projects as needed.  Cooperate with other Housing and University staffs (facilities, dining services, support services and police).  Availability for emergencies, equipment needs, and other duties as needed.

ROLE MODELING: Assistant Resident Directors must demonstrate appropriate behavior through actions and lead by example. This includes following all UCR Housing and University policies and procedures especially related to alcohol and other drug use. Assistant Resident Directors must also maintain appropriate personal relationships with the staff they supervise and residents/students who fall into the scope of their respective areas. Assistant Resident Directors will follow UCR’s policy on harassment by refraining from all types of harassment with other staff or residents.

JOB REQUIREMENTS : (1) Must be and remain a full-time, registered student with a quarter and cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 and be in good standing throughout the academic year. S/NC grades are limited. Grade history will be reviewed. Undergraduates must successfully complete 12 units per quarter. Graduate students must successfully complete a minimum of 8 units per quarter. (2) Required to spend several evenings and weekends in assigned area. (3) Must limit total class hours to 16 units (undergraduate) or 10 units (graduate) unless approved by supervisors. (4) Must attend Spring, Fall and Winter training sessions, all staff meetings, in-service training sessions and off-site training and developments. (5) Extracurricular activities on campus and other employment or office positions must be approved by direct supervisor and must not interfere with job responsibilities. (6) Must assist the Professional Staff with other job-related request as needed throughout the year. (7) Must have a working personal phone with message capability. (8) Must adhere to all policies and expectations as detailed in Assistant Resident Director manual. (9) Must successfully pass a background investigation through the Department of Justice. (10) Must possess a valid Driver’s License to operate a University vehicle.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: (1) Must have related bachelor’s degree or 2-3 academic years at an accredited university or college with 2 years of residential life experience (Resident Advisor or Programming Coordinator preferred) by start of Fall Quarter. (2) Undergraduates: Must have a Fall quarter and cumulative GPA of a 2.75 or above and maintain that quarter and cumulative GPA throughout the Winter and Spring quarters. Grade history will be reviewed.
