Amazon Assist on the Kindle Fire HDX

Welcome to this short video demonstrating how you can use the Mayday facility of the Kindle Fire HDX to turn on accessibility on your device.

Mayday is a feature that is built into the Kindle Fire HDX. It's only available if, during the setup, you have registered your device with an Amazon account.

Once you've done that, you can swipe down from the top of the screen and go to the Mayday button and ask them to turn on accessibility for you.

I need to connect to a Wi-Fi, and there's little box opened at the bottom right hand corner, saying I'm in the queue, waiting for a tech advisor.

Amazon:

Thanks for calling Amazon Assist, as you've pressed the Mayday button. My name's Deborah and I'll be your tech advisor. How can I help you today?

Narrator:

Hi, I've got a new Kindle Fire HDX. I can't see the screen very well and I've been told there's some magnification I can turn on? On the device? But I don't know where I'd go to do that.

Amazon:

Okay, magnification, perfect. What you can do is, actually, you can increase the font size. I can direct you towards that if you'd like?

OK, no problem at all. So what you can do is bring down the quick settings menu here. I've just drawn on your screen there, can you see that?

Narrator:

Yes, yes I can. So I do that? OK.

Amazon:

Perfect. Just before we go any further, when you say that you can't see the screen very well, can you go into a little bit more detail about that for me please?

Narrator:

I'm partially sighted, so I need to have things quite large for me to be able to read them properly.

Amazon:

OK. No problem. So, if you just tap on Settings, right there, I've just circled that in orange.

Narrator:

OK, yeah.

Amazon:

OK, and it's Accessibility then, down here. So, there's a couple of different things here you can use. I would assume the one you're looking for is the screen magnifier.

Narrator:

That's it! Yeah, that's it. Brilliant!

Amazon:

Perfect. Excellent. Is there anything else you'd like me to help you with now?

You mentioned there was a "large fonts"?

Amazon:

Yeah, that would be for if you were within books you could do it through the book itself. But there's another one right here, underneath the Screen Magnifier, so you can use this as well. I've just highlighted it there for you.

Narrator:

Great, thanks. One last thing while I'm on with you - I've got a friend who can't see at all, and he was told that he could have his books read out to him on the Kindle Fire HDX. Do you know if that's true?

Amazon:

Yes. Just on the top of the screen there, I've just highlighted it there for you, there's a screen reader, so all of your items will be read back to you. Or there's a text-to-speech option as well, within

rnib.org.uk particular Kindle books. So there's two different options there that you could use.

So the Amazon Assistants do know about the accessibility. And the way that Mayday works, they obviously have a pen or something at their end that they can circle different things on your screen. You have to be able to see them to touch them, but they can direct you through the menus to the settings you need to turn on for screen reader or magnification.
